ITALIAN AMERICANS AND FEDERAL HILL is a documentary film by Producer/Director Jon Raben. Providence, Rhode Island's "Little Italy," is one of America's most storied neighborhoods. Relive the traditions and challenges of Italian Americans whose ancestors immigrated for a better future.
Once a bustling Italian enclave of cold-water flats and peddlers, Federal Hill now features upscale restaurants and markets known throughout the world. For immigrants challenged by poverty, the language barrier and discrimination, hard work and education became the path to a better life. Today, Italian Americans from Federal Hill are among the mainstream and elite of society.
Italian Americans and Federal Hill produced and directed by Jon Raben, features personalities including three former Providence mayors, a Rhode Island lieutenant governor and a Providence City Council president. Also included are an historian, a judge and a U.S. ambassador, as well as priests, artisans, entrepreneurs and other Italian Americans from Federal Hill. Attacking stereotypes, this moving and lively depiction of the Italian American experience was filmed on location in historic Federal Hill. The soundtrack features traditional Italian folk and classical music recorded live.
"...RICH AND FASCINATING..."
- Michael Janusonis, The Providence Journal
"A REMARKABLE DOCUMENTARY"
- Frances Syner,The Federal Hill Gazette
[Raben's] "patient, sympathetic, but deliberate style seems to coax revealing, personal anecdotes and details from his subjects that would have been lost to a less careful approach. It almost seems that the subject and the chronicler were somehow meant to find each other."
-Jeff Kos, The Federal Hill Gazette

my parents moved to the hill when i was maybe 1 or 2, i was born in 1977 and had the pleasure of being raised in this beautiful neighborhood for years and the people were the best and the food and the bakery's and the smells from the food and bread being made, the sounds of the church bells, everyone knew each other, the meat markets, i see my buddy joe in this video from joe acorns market, may he rest in peace, he was a wonderful man, i remember his father was still working in the market when i was little, just the greatest place and people in the world growing up todays federal hill is nothing like i remember, i still visit mostly everyday though the video was well done and captured the spirit of federal hill and the interviews with the people who grew up in the hill, man do i miss them old days in the hill great video though

And Italy should encourage people of Italian descent (from Argentina, Brazil etc) to re -immigrate to Italy to boost its population , fill labor shortages in certain sectors, instead of Arabs, and Africans I read article about a hospital in a small town in Sicily that brought over doctors from Argentina (Italian ancestry). The hospital was on verge of closing, but with the new doctors it was able to continue to operate.
