Well, the Italian army surrendered in masses when the Italian mainland was invaded by the Allies (American and British troops mainly). However by Summer 1943, German troops had already seized control of southern Italy. Thus it became mostly a war between USA, Britain and Nazi Germany with some Italian troops fighting alongside. Italian anti-fascist (communist for example) partisans fought alongside the Allies. The capturing and execution of Mussolini, the Italian Dictator, was the credit of Italian communist partisans. WW2 is a combination of many wars (Finnish Winterwar, The Pacific War, The Chino-Japanese war etc.)

It never made sense to me but the other 21 classmates had their diploma with that in their minds. Your comment isn’t historically accurate what happened is the allies landed in Sicily and then the kingdom of Italy decide to betray Germany arrest Mussolini and sign a truce with allies, Hitler after hearing that sent the army liberated Mussolini and set up a new puppet state called Italian social republic So yes kingdom of Italy which began the war as axis allied switched sides

It looks like people can't understand that the Italian Civil War happened during the Ally invasion of Italy: -Thousands of Italians (500000) joined the Army of the Italian Social Republic and continued fighting alongside with the Germans (for example, in 1944, 9000 Italians, at the command of general Mario Carloni, managed to defeat 18000 American soldiers in the Battle of Garfagnana); -hundreds of Italians joined the Italian SS and killed a lot of other Italians in reprisals; - the partisan war against Fascist Italians and Germans began in 1943 (Mussolini was captured and killed by partisans) - The Royal Army in Southern Italy helped the Allies conquer Northern Italy. - at the end of 1945, the Kingdom was in chaos: episodes of violence and murders occurred everywhere. Wouldn't you define this a "Civil War"?

The primary belligerents in both power and coordination were the Allies and the Reich. This entire process was begun by an Allied invasion, not Italian uprising. Each major "line" of defense up the coast was created by the SS. The major offensives came from the UK/US and allies. This is no more a "civil war" than the liberation of France and Poland or the defeat of Nazi Germany. Those had partisans as well. Recasting this as a "civil war" is Italian historical revisionism. Italy was an aggressor, period. They committed atrocities in Abyssinia, Albania, and Greece. They were invaded and removed from the war. The only military fighting on the part of Italy to remove their own fascist government came _after_ the Allies invaded and had secured huge portions of the country.

Burned Edits Fascism promote interest of the state therefore interests of the community . It does encourage private interests unlike communism but only if they do not deserve the society as a whole. As mussolini said : there must be nothing outside the state because according to him liberal democracies were selfish and individualists. Hitler despises capitalism because he was in favor of a true meritocracy where you will not be selected for your wealth but for your capacities. He thought that a capitalist world creates a new aristocracy. All fascists regime restore the corporations which were a serious limitation of free market by creating common rules for compagnies to avoid explotation as a mean to gain superiority. With corporations in place the only way to beat the others is through quality, not exploitation. Read about the early life of Mussolini and you will find out that the only difference beetween socialism and capitalism is that fascism works in the real world. Indeed Mussolini was a devote socialist but he wanted victory upon ploutocratic states and this is why he renonced his quest for equality to actually create something who could workout and defeat capitalism.

Civil wars inside of bigger wars are fairly common. The civil war in Yugoslavia at the same time was quite savage. There was also a civil war in Missouri During the American Civil War, and a three-way civil war in Georgia during the American revolution. Just thought someone might like to know.

Please all of you study history! In 1943 Mussolini was imprisoned by the King and Italy started to speak of peace with UK. Few months later Mussolini was liberated by a german task force and brought in Nothern Italy. There, in the area not yet under the Allieas control, he formed a second italian goverment, the Italian Social Republic. The King and the Marshall Badoglio escaped from Rome to Brindisi and formed a free government under the controll of the Allies. After the Armistice of Cassibile, 8th september 1943, signed by the King, the italian armed forces had no orders about what to do with germans soldiers: some of italians soldiers surrendered and then joined Mussolini in the North , others fighted the germans, joned the King in south and the Allies. This is what i think is considered a Civil War. Italians vs Italians. The Allies, landend in Sicily and then in the italian peninsula, fighetd only italian forces in the beginnign of the the invasion. There was only 5 german divisions in Sicily, that Mussolini ask for a better defense. After the Armistice, the Germans forces invaded Italy for prevent a easy victory of Allies: with the Armistice italian forces was with no orders and did not who fight against.

It's bugged the shit out of me how most English-language histories just stop mentioning Italy after the Armistice - and if they do mention it, it's just as a battleground for instances like Anzio and Monte Cassino - all those Italian troops didn't just fucking disappear over night. Those that turned themselves in to the allies were either demobilized, used in manual labor outfits, or reconstituted into the Co-B Army - which starting at the Battle of San Pietro Infine fought with the allies throughout the rest of the war. Those that were interned by the Germans either joined the Salo puppet regime (which did field a decent-sized military force and fought side-by-side with German troops for the rest of the war), or refused to fight for the Germans and weren't even treated like POWs - most of the Italian internees refused to fight for the Germans and as a result they received the "Soviet prisoner" treatment as opposed to British and American POWS, which were actually treated like human beings. Those Italian soldiers stationed in the Balkans were even more in a chaotic situation - you have instances like where the Acqui Division held their ground against German assault on Cephalonia and you have instances of Italian soldiers fighting alongside the Yugoslav partisans - who they'd previously been waging war against. THIS IS INTERESTING SHIT. Not to mention the partigiani, which is its whole topic unto itself - not to mention the oft-overlooked reality of fighting in Italy, it was the worst of both the Pacific and Western European theaters because you had a much more technologically sound enemy in the Germans and Italian Fascists - AND the difficulties of dealing with civilians - WHILE ALSO having to deal with issues like malaria and dysentery. Worst of both worlds. This is extremely interesting history, Italy was socially wounded following its civil war and resultant political strife, it needed time to recover - it's partly why you have Italian filmmakers coming to empathize or at least identify with the Western genre, which is ALSO set in the aftermath of a damaging civil conflict. It's such interesting stuff but most will never even know it happened in the English world.

I think the main objective of the Italian campaign was to open up another front and draw Axis resources from where they desperately needed them. The assault on Kursk was in part unsuccesful because the Axis had to divert resources to the Allies landing in Sicily. Even if Italy was knocked out of the war earlier they Allies would have had to cross the Alpes which would have been nearly impossible.

🇮🇹Yes there were two wars .. the first with the Italian social republic and Germany against allies ( with the cobelligerent army also known as kingdom of italy ) and the second war .. The CIVIL WAR with the republic against partisans and CLN ( national liberation commitee ) partisans were antifascist but from differents political ideas.. Red ribbon ( most of these socialist and communist) Blue ribbon were soldiers that after the armistice became partisans ( Badoglio’s soldiers ) Green ribbon (catholic brigades) White ribbon others..there were some episodes where partisans fought each others for their political ideas (example Osoppo brigade partisans were massacred by communist partisans) and also partisans with fascist troops together in the last days of war to defend west borders against french invasion (Aosta Valley 1945) . the war and the civil war officially finished the first week of may but in some places in the northen italy the civil war finished unofficially after a lot of “revenges” by people to other people in the 1948-1949... ( for example the red death triangle in Emilia or the east italian ethnic genocide perpetraded by jugoslavian people)..

If you didn’t know this period was in World War Two. The allies managed to capture Sicily after defeating Axis forces in North Africa due to the so called Operation Mincemeat. After capturing Sicily, the Civil War began as Italy began being torn apart by a Fascist Italy and an Allied Italy. In the end, Fascist Italy surrendered and let go of Italy. This was the beginning of the downfall of the Axis, and also only precipitated by the German collapse in April 1945, and the end of Japanese Empire in September 1945
@villagernewsletter3577
@villagernewsletter3577 11 ай бұрын
Yes I remember learning about this Mincemeat was really interesting, they planted a fake dead body of a pretend soldier that was dropped off the coast of Spain and then sent to Germany, the soldier’s briefcase had details about attacking in Greece, so the Germans mobilized there ignoring Sicily, but Sicily was the true prize after all since the whole dead body was a deception 1:57

The meme "Italy switched side" it's pretty inaccurate, eventhough I get its goal is to crack a joke I feel like many non-Europeans end up having a distorted version of what really happened. Before WWI Italy had a DEFENCIVE pact with Prussia and Austria (basically the paper stated "if one of us is attacked the others must join in defence"). What happened is that Austria and Germany attacked first and Italy was therefore not obbliged to act in defence of its allies (who btw by attacking first without informing Italy infringed many articles of the before mentioned defensive pact). After a year Italy, now having no more obbligation towards Prussia and Germany, decided to join France and England. Before WWII on the other hand the Fascists led by Mussolini did a coup and basically installed an illegitimate government, it was this government that later joined the Nazis during WWII. After the allies had liberated the south of the peninsula Mussolini was arrested and Pietro Badoglio signed the armistice, the Nazis decided then to invade a now neutral Italy and also free Mussolini and having him institute a puppet state called Social Republic of Salò. After these events the Italian civil war started. Jokes are funny but please guys learn some history.

Enrico, the real history is different from your description: Mussolini did not a coup but was, on 1922, designated by the king as prime minister, after that can agree that Italy was under fascist regime, think about the years and situation around the World too. Italy join german side in 1940after 10 months of war, the germans did not invade neutral Italy, they were already there fighting, with Italians, against the allied invaders. Mussolini was arrested by the king and liberated after almost 10 days by german paratroopers. Up to 8 September 43 Italy was allied with germans and fighting together, at 18:30 badoglio and king declared the surrender and run away leaving italian soldiers without any proper orders.
