I love our family's Italian Greyhound, she's the best in the world! I've never met a dog more affectionate and cuddly than her. The more skin-to-skin contact she receives, the happier she is, and the happier she is, the more kisses you receive :) The most important advice I can give to a person planning on getting an Italian Greyhound though, is to NEVER EVER get one unless you're able to stay with him/her almost 24/7. An Italian Greyhound will not survive at home on its own for more than 2-4 hours a day. Their small size makes it easy for you to bring them along wherever you go though; while on a visit at your friend's place, while traveling abroad (you can bring her/him into the cabin), you name it :) Italian Greyhounds will be heartbroken if they're not allowed to sleep with you during night, or if they're not allowed up on the sofa. They need a tremendous and exceptional amount of love and care. xxx

My Italian Greyhound of 12 years was my best friend. Excellent video, thank you. I lost her recently to kidney failure. Brush their teeth regularly. Dental problems caused the kidney failure. She was everything and then some to me as your little guy is to you. God bless. My time with her just wasn't long enough. I miss her dearly every day. Thanks again.

Your dog is gorgeous. I rescued 3 and they lived to be 16 yrs old, all 3 of them. But they all died within a year of each other and I miss them so bad I can't stand it. The breed is just perfect for me. Snugglers and babies. You did a great job talking about Iggies and their characteristics. I can't find them around here or I'd have another one. I miss my babies really bad.

I have 6 Italian Greyhounds! Ive been breeding and showing dogs for 50 yrs and I believe this is definitely one of the best, if not the best breed ever. They are loving, affectionate, intelligent, obedient and highly sensitive. Ideal house companions, that are usually well behaved, but not always
@sharonh.harris19243 жыл бұрын
I've had 3 Iggies and adore the breed. I lost all 3 of mine at 16 yrs old within a year of each other. It's cut my heart to the quick. I would love another but I can't find them around here now. There seems to be 85% pit bulls, 5% Labs, 2% mutts and 3% pureblooded and those aren't Iggies. Everywhere I look it's like that. Somebody is irresponsibly breeding pitties out the wazoo and everyone else is afraid to breed purebloods because of the liabilities and being thought they are the boogy man for breeding dogs (people automatically think you are a "puppy mill" or a "backyard breeder" if you try to breed and sell a dog). So we are seeing less and less good breeders, prices going higher and higher, meanwhile rescues are full of unadoptable dogs like pit bulls, seniors, special needs dogs. Here it's getting so bad that people are stealing pureblood dogs right out of your yard, house and car. I hate puppy mills and irresponsible breeders and I agree that we should spay and neuter. But now we have the problem of few good dogs for the demand. I'm too afraid of pit bulls, that just is not my breed. I have a senior dog (chi) and I've had special needs dogs. I want another Iggy so bad I can taste it, but I can't find one.

I have two of these canine characters. They are the clowns of the canine world and help keep the bed quite warm. Forget potty training these little guys. It is either too hot, too windy, too cold, too rainy. Only autumn do they want to go out. I litter trained both of mine. In autumn, I do not have to worry about getting liter. But that small break from the liter box does not last long. I have taught them sit, beg, down, wave, high five, shake, treat on the paw and wait for the command to eat it, take it, drop it, and we are working on roll over. They do not like being upside down unless it is in your arms. It is not a dog for everyone, especially people that may not want a dog constantly on your lap, side, or chest. I really love them both. One is eight years of age and religious other is two years of age. They are bundles of energy that love to steal and be chased for the item that they stole. They are tiny robbers.

These guys are so adorbs, including yours! Thank so much for posting an honest assessment. Based on our lifestyle and home arrangement, I think the housebreaking would be difficult for us. You never know. We also live in a seasonal and rainy part of the US so I've heard that this is not ideal for these cutie pies. Lol, we currently have a pit mix rescue, and she sometimes will hold her first pee until absolutely necessary which can amount to a full 15-16 hrs. Dog door is fully accessible, but has no interest if too rainy. I get it.

Hi, cool video. I wondered, how do you prepare for the separation from your dog? - basically I am at home most of the time but go out twice or three times a week for 2 hours or so, is there any way you prepare them for being on their own for a few hours? - ive been thinking just get them used to it as soon as I get her but do you have any other tips? Thanks.

It is hard to hold their bladder due to size. All 8 of mine over the years have accidents if you don't have papers or weewee pad down. They lived from 13-15 years. My largest one seems to be a little better. He will bark to go out. The white one never would. He'd go to the door but if you didn't see him there he'd just hike his leg on something.

I am sitting for my friend's cermet. She's full grown. Love your Iggy. Such a sweetie. BTW, there's a video on my channel about making raw home made dog food which is superior to any kibble, in every way. It is not as expensive as you might think but it does require a meat grinder. Also, Iggys do shed, just not all the time and the hair is so short as to be hardly noticeable.

But she's come a long way as far as being potty trained. We almost got it down. Very few accidents now. Positive reinforcement and treats have helped us out a lot.

I have an Italian, Sophie, who is about 18-months-old now, and I DO hear Italians are less high maintenance if you have more than one, in that they will occupy eachother more readily instead of you being the occupier all the time lol. Sophie wants my attention 24/7, and I think if I had another, that probably wouldn't be the case as much. I'm thinking about it ;)

Great video, very helpful! I'm looking to buy either a whippet or an IG, I'm leaning more towards an IG but I've got some concerns about the housetraining. Like you said in the video, you used to have a lot more accidents before, how often did they occur? And how often do you walk him? I'm rooming with my best friend in a three-room apartment, do you think an IG would have too many problems walking up and down the stairs?
@Meteosprite7 жыл бұрын
+Se Tell Hi :) Thank you, glad it helped! Several accidents daily within the first 6-12 months. They are ridiculous to house train. We still get accidents from him, maybe once every couple of days. The thing with IGs, they don't respond to being told off. He is not phased what so ever, in fact he thinks it's a game. Love him to death though. You want to walk your IG once a day ideally, but if you have a big fenced garden you can skip a day as long as you play with your dog a lot and they get chance to run and use their legs. Enzo used the stairs with no problems :)

High energy is the reason we got a second so they can play with each another. However now it's double the work and double the craziness as you will see on my videos lol. I actually may be adopting a little Italian Greyhound/Chihuahua mix soon, but I was wondering if they are escape artists? As in, will they purposely look for a way to get out (if there's spaces in the fence) or would they stay contained? She'd be living in a large house with a huge backyard and pool, but there are spaces in the gate that she'd be able to easily escape through. She's extremely tiny though, maybe 4-5lbs, so she'd have no problem slipping through most small spaces. I'd hate to not let her run around but I don't know what she may do. Is this typical of the breed?
@JessBeautyJunkie8 жыл бұрын
In my experience, yes, because they're sighthounds, and actually have a high prey drive. You can see it in the way Enzo is intently staring at something off to the side during the video. So, if they see something outside the fence that is "prey" to them...they want it. They'll do anything to get it. Dig their way out. When Sophie sees prey, she GOES, and there's no stopping her. They have horrible recall, which means they don't come back easily or at all, so if they get out, it's a problem. If there's spaces in the fence, I strongly recommend repairing them before getting an Italian.
@xXVenoEmoXx8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info! She ended up not being a stray (we found her and thought she was abandoned) but ended up finding her owners a week later. I ended up adopting a Yorkie/Chihuahua mix instead. Tonight my IG broke his leg for the second time. The first break he jumped off my back deck (12 feet high) and broke his front left leg. It cost over $4k USD! Tonight he broke his other front leg by jumping over a 2 foot high baby gate, the same gate he's been jumping over for the past 1 1/2. Here I am with another 4k surgery bill. So far, between the costs of buying the dog and 2 broken legs I am almost into this dog for 10,000 USD! Please keep this in mind before you decide to get an IG. If you do make sure you get insurance and make sure that insurance covers broken legs.

You forgot two very important health issues, seizures and teeth. My IG started having seizures around the age of 5. It's not because of epilepsy, but something with the bread. After I starting feeding my IG better food, he want from having 4-5 seizures a year to maybe 1. I crate my dog when I'm at work, and I line his cage with pillows to make sure he'll be safe if he does have a seizure. Also, IG's tend to develop periodontal disease. Jack, my IG was my first dog and I made the mistake of not brushing his teeth which advanced or even brought this disease on. It's common for IG's to have teeth problems, so make sure to brush your dogs teeth weekly. My IG is 10, and I've had him for 9.5 years so I have experience. They are incredible dogs and I would not trade him for anything. I plan on getting Jack a brother soon, and will probably own IG's for the rest of my life. They are loving, they don't stink, or shed, and they have the most fun and unique personalities. I'm sure I'd be happy with just about any breed of dog, but I have truly fallen in love with the IG.

Is he still not shedding, or now that he's older, has his coat changed? Please let me know, I would greatly appreciate it before we commit to purchasing an IG. Thanks so much!

Amanda Briggs Hi Amanda. Thanks for your comment :) Yes his coat is exactly the same. He still doesn’t really shed. If your child is allergic I don’t know whether getting an IG is a good idea. Just because they don’t really shed doesn’t mean they won’t still cause a reaction, especially with the nature of this dog; always being on furniture, being very cuddly, etc. The last thing you want it to get one and then have to give it up, that would be heartbreaking for both you and the dog. I hope this helped somewhat :(

Oh absolutely! I couldn't agree more. A couple my friend knows has an Italian greyhound and when they visit they always bring her with them. So we have plans to have our child see how she does around the dog for a while so we know for sure. You should do an updated video on Enzo :) Thanks for replying to me!
