For example, Croats, Romanians, Serbs, Czechs, just to name a few. If that wasn’t morale depleting enough, they were losing ground against Russia during the first couple years of the war. Secondly, they were hardly prepared for a three-fronted war. Russians to the east, Serbians to the south and Italy to the west. They didn’t have a very well trained manpower and couldn’t sustain any offensives. Thirdly, their rail network was small and inefficient, and their supplies were running low. I could probably go on a list, but these were kind of the main ones. Austria-Hungary was bound to collapse, whether they fought any war or not.

Actually, most of the casualties came from fighting, specifically an artillery fire. Both Italy and France have built the world's most powerful mountain fort at their Alpine Border facing each other. Maybe the most Italian soldiers were a healthy bunch of people. They did not want to die for a stupid nationalistic/facist cause, so they had not so much fighting spirit; they only wanted to survive and go back home. Besides that: we all know the stories about bad leadership and lack of supplies, industry and weaponary. I think WW1 and the strong socialist/communist influence among the conscripts played also a major part. WW1 caused a national trauma in Italy; in the same way as in France. It was way more a pessimistic view on the war, than for example in Germany. The facists were trying to change this, but were only partly succesfull. Although the left wing movement was hardly surpressed in Italy, it's ideas still had a large influence on the Italian working class and peasants soldiers; especially from the nothern and central regions. The hated Mussolini and his facists movement.

true, but that is mostly because Italy had already fought (and won) other wars before the second world war, so, despite winning those, now Italy was quite poor and not ready for the second world war yet...also in France, Mussolini actually sacrificed thousands of italian soldiers willingly, knowing that they would die without doing almost any damage to France... because he just wanted to show Germany that Italy could attack a big and powerful nation of the Allies if he really wanted to
