You may know Italy’s most iconic football arena as San Siro, but for the last 38 years Inter Milan’s ‘La Scala of Football’ has officially gone by another name: Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, named after the double World Cup winner who became Italy’s first football phenomenon.

Me and my father are Inter fans. When my dad was just a kid, his mother introduced him to an elderly Meazza, who was having a drink at a bar like an everyday guy. My dad was shocked to see such a humble man, given his past as a national hero. Meazza was also kind of surprised that people still recognized him and wanted to chat. Different times I guess...

Considering there's rumours that one of the Milan teams (looking more likely to be AC Milan atm) will leave San Siro in the future, I wonder if the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza name would be gone entirely if Inter were the ones to leave. Certainly one of the best European players ever, in a restricted club with Puskas, Cruyff, V.Mazzola, Beckenbauer, Platini. My granddad, born in 1920, was a rowing athlete in Rome since his pre-teens and always went to football matches of either Roma or Lazio every week, and Italy when it played in Rome, having ticket discount as a CONI athlete. So he watched Meazza several times. Being a Lazio fan, his idol was Piola, but he said Meazza was a mixture of Platini (for the playmaking, passing and intelligence) and Baggio (for the skill and dribble), and better than both as he was also faster and strong in the air. Not bad...

@@rickyfootitt5077 It's definitely a factor and I think all of you guys arguing Baggio is better are suffering a recency bias. You guys saw Baggio play and never saw Meazza play so how do you really know Baggio is better than Meazza? My favorite test is take a players skill set and then think if you paired him with modern fitness and tactics would he fit in the modern game and do well. A guy like Meazza playing in a position (Inside Right in Il Metodo) which has almost been replicated in the modern game with right center midfield in a 4-3-3 who is elusive a technical shooter and a good passer with vision are we talking Andres Iniesta, Xavi, David Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, or Giuseppe Meazza.

@@timothystamm3200 I've never mentioned Baggio I just think with how long Maldini played for and always at the highest level with football changing loads during his career that's why he's the greatest for me I think great players of any era will be great players in any era I'm not dismissing Meazza skill or achievements as I've already said he was a great player

@@rickyfootitt5077 I'm sorry I confused you for someone else I replied to. Yeah he did go on for a long time but is that skill or health? I read in a book called Soccernomics that AC Milan were one of the first adopters of the more recent advances in sports medicine. Essentially being a great defender and playing your whole career at a place where they know how to keep healthy is probably a good thing for having a long career. Though considering how different defense and attack is why can't they both be the greatest I really don't like comparing attackers with defenders. But I don't really believe that using a recent player to compare with Meazza is fair because you and I are much more familiar with their exploits than with and old player from a bygone era. Also Maldini was good but is he better than Berkanbauer, Aristide, Fachetti, and Burgnich or the players on Ajax's defense in the 1970s? Who knows (three of those where Italian by the way, in case you didn't know.)

Alvmeister _03 It’s really hard to compare players in different positions and even different eras. So Maldini has to be the best Italian defender of the modern game whilst Fachetti is the best in the old game. And Meazza is the best forward of the old game whilst Baggio/Totti are the best of the modern game. I feel it’s only acceptable to compare players this way
