I like how you encourage people. Letting them know that confusion and difficulty is normal in the beginning

The most difficult thing for me was how close the more experienced members of the community kept their knowledge, unwilling to help a novice like they are protecting others from our ignorance. Conversely, some would talk above my head, deliberately or perhaps without consideration leaving out key details that prevented me from understanding the solution. I got there with minimal guidance, but looking back my original programming could have been accomplished with much less struggle, and trial and error. I also might have learned less, but at least I'd have clearer notes.

When I was a maintenance technician I had similar problems. The guys who were veterans were very intelligent but unhappy. They didn’t seem to care if I succeeded or failed. They hated being asked questions. That always puzzled me.

@@Wolf.88 I've never understood that mindset. I have enough to do without getting calls to fix everything. I also love to teach. I'll show anybody who's willing to learn how stuff works.

I work in Industrials Automations by virtue of being a Field Service Process Engineer. But that wasn’t how I started. I started as Plant Operator and Mechanic, and that gave me all the experience to understand process in the industry sector I work in and still work same sector. Learning Automations was tough, but the fact that I already understood to a good degree how process works for our OEM Engineering Designed Systems made a huge difference. Helping to do over a dozen plus major PLC5 to Controllogix upgrades when I knew nothing much about PLC was a HUGE amount of on the job training and the best training experience you can get! As you deal with everything including legacy issues. For mentoring though, I got my one sole senoir coworker I work with with who is really damn smart and who I worked with doing all the PLC upgrades which also included HMI upgrades too. Funny to think I did the HMI design on almost all those projects and all due to my one coworker. He who started by showing me how to draw a single line in Rockwell Automations FTView software that we used. The daunting task in Industrial Automations is that there is so much to learn and in an industry going through so much change at a time when the Automations Technologies are changing just as rapidly and hard to barely keep up in knowledge.

I have a question for IT and Automation Academy about some more details on your road map. On the part of "Learn instrumentation" to what degree would you do that/ did YOU do that? Would your recommend to just get it to the point of wiring and signals processing setting up device parameters and basic commissioning (surface level) or deep level as in instrumentation calibration (costly for the variety of gear needed to do it/my hand pump and certified calibrated test guage cost several thousands and that is just for pressure transmitter calibration ) or deep deep level where you can replace board level components on faulty instruments? (Would have to work for an instrument manufacturer for this level to have access to device diagrams/schematics plus oscilloscope and other electronic testing equipment )

How can you work as an instrument engineer without knowing PLCs? Are there roles working on analyzers? Or specialty instruments only?

I know of a guy who started learning PLCs in his early 40s, while doing industrial maintenance. He replaced the control systems for several machines with PLC control (Wago/Codesys) + HMI, and even programmed some all-new machines. He saved the company millions of dollars!
