Battambang, Cambodia is known for it's agriculture - it's often called the rice bowl of Cambodia - but there's so much more to it. The most popular attractions are the bat cave and the bamboo train, however in this video we're going to show you some additional things to see and do in Battambang. From bizarre Buddhist statues, to the stinkiest market where "Cambodian cheese", prahok is made. We are jumping on a scooter and spending the day exploring some of the off the beaten path sights in Cambodia's 2nd largest city.

Prahok needs to be cooked in small quantities with your dish. Same function as chicken or beef stock here. Just for the flavor. Most of the bad smells are gone after cooking. Similar to anchovies' use.

Watching on my break to support you Mr itchy. Very good observation on not focusing on the genocide part, it’s a part of the country history but shouldn’t be the defining image of it! Your videos bring light and joy to Cambodia imo What does your wife think of Cambodia by the way? Don’t recall her opinion

Battambang reminded me very much of what I remember Phnom Penh looking like when I was there in 2000!! There was more traffic for sure in Phnom Penh. Happy Travels!!!

Battambang is a good place to visit indeed. Most Cambodian eat prohok and for those who do not know how to make it, they will buy from the market. For those who know how to make it like my mum, they don’t buy prohok from from the market because they know that it is dirty. The sellers should not put our food on the ground like that. Most Cambodians know it but some of them have no choice. It is the government’s job to enforce the sellers to have hygiene but they don’t do much work. Who can if the government can’t?

Love your video! My dad was from Battambang and he had loved his beloved hometown so much. Battambang is beautiful and quite special in so many ways, too many to mention, but just to name a few prahok, the songs about Battambang, the food, the stories/legends, the temples which are even older than Angkor.

So the secret ingredient of the fermented fish paste is the ground? Got it!
@steveaustin1984
@steveaustin1984 Жыл бұрын
It was described as "ground" fish paste. Until today, I thought it was an adjective describing the refinement process, as in reduced into smaller particles, not where it was kept or where it was processed.

Remember, most victims at S21 were Khmer Rouge cadres themselves. They killed each others in the thousands. So don't give that S21 and Cheung Ek any attention. The real victims are in the rural area. Battambang province produce the most rice in Cambodia. Do you know the story of Kaming Pouy reservoir?
@EddieManning
@EddieManning Жыл бұрын
What I do know of the reservoir is that my mother-in-law (now age 74) was forced labour by Khmer Rouge into building/digging that reservoir. Working 7 days per week and only 1 shower per week. Amazingly strong lady and still alive. My partner lost brothers and an uncle to KR. My partner told me this when in Battambang and going to see her family beyond Kaming Pouy Reservoir in February this year (2023).

Yes, I actually talked about it in the video, but I had to cut it because the audio wasn't good. It was started by Pol Pot and many people died while making it.

Thank you for not focusing your video on The Killing Fields. As a Khmer-Canadian, I really appreciate my fellow Canadians showing some consideration for Cambodia. The Killing Fields is something I really want to erase from Cambodian history.

It's important to know what your ppl went through & the struggle they face just to try to help their kids escape the khmer rouge regime. To no allow history to repeat itself! Genocide is a Genocide! We see it now unfortunately happening in Gaza.

As a Cambodian, gotta say that’s a really disgusting way to make food. Even if that’s their way to make a living but mannnn they need a cleaner place. They literally put the food that people suppose to eat on the ground and some even step on it with barefoot. 😂

There's something about Cambodia changing the laws regarding online gambling... I'm not sure. That, and covid put a pause on a lot of construction, so maybe they'll come back now and finish them.
