How do I deal with such a question without sketching the graph to have -2,0.5 and 1.5. Like how else do I estimate these values??

I'm doing CCEA further maths and I'm really struggling with this topic at the moment about 3 dimensional planes and finding out if there are no solutions, a unique solution or a line of solutions. I don't understand at all and was wondering if you have any videos on this topic.

hello i would like to ask, how did you draw the graph in the first place? i mean, we didn't know any of the roots, and i'm assuming we can't use graphic calculators in examination halls. forgive me, i am very weak in sketching graphs so please help me

I was just demonstrating this as a way of estimating roots if you were to draw the graph of y=x^3 - 3x + 1. If you did draw this then one would say, use a graphics calculator for example or draw up a table of values and just manually plot it.

Sir, when I used the 2nd formula to try with Xn=0.5, it converged to 1.5, not 0.35. Pls help.

3:20 how can you use an approximation in the workings? what if I approximated the answer to something else, wouldnt the whole answer be different??

The approximation to the root was seen from the graph. In an exam you would most probably be given an interval that the root lies. So you can take a point in that interval for your starting approximation. Taking an alternative approximation may lead to another root if exists or the iterative formula may not converge at all to an answer.
