About the lock tabs. Race cars wire important bolts to be 100% sure they don’t rattle loose. I have seen countless videos of damaged diffs caused by the ring gear bolts coming loose, so I guess Toyota want their diffs to be totally reliable. Which is why you buy a Toyota.

The click is the torque wrench releasing pressure. If you JUST keep pulling, you’ll over torque. If you relieve pressure and pull again, it just pulls with the set torque, and then releases when you hear the click. Just don’t keep pulling after the click lol. I guess the moral of the story is to know how to use a torque wrench in the first place. Lol

I have been following your build. So cool!. I have an 04 first gen Tundra that I bought new back in the day. Pretty much stock but kept up in excellent condition. My daily driver. I put on a GFC camper and custom front/rear bumpers last year/10K smittybilt winch. Currently doing the suspension. New Camburg Mfg upper control arms, new OEM lower control arms, bushings/ball joints. New knuckles. Bilstien 6112's. An add a leaf kit for the rear. Goal is to be able to run 33"s. It's a 20 year old truck but I would rather fix it up than buy something new.

My uncle has a really old willys Jeep that the only thing that is still Jeep is the body itself the shell the drivetrain the frame the steering wheel shifter everything else is Toyota. He cut down an old Toyota truck and sat the Willys body on it and built it. And it's been going strong forever. I'm pretty sure even the gauges are Toyota radio everything.

Toyota 8 inch have two different spline count on the pinion, there is 27 spline pinion for older model and 29 spline for the later 8 inch. Others gear company have 2 option, either 27 or 29 spline. Yukon just offer 1 type of spline and give the pinion flange on the package.

My 91 yota rode on 35s with 488 gears just fine but we also played with the gears in the trans we had a gearset for 32s 35s and 37s we built a trans case and doubler so if 1 went down we could pull the trans out junp the truck on 32s to 35s and the 1 on 35s to 37s if the 1 on 37s went down we just played with the other 2 till parts got there PSA if you're running 37 13.50 15s on your light yota dont stop in running water we learned that playing in flood water that looked calm the truck showed us there was a small current a mile from the river when we stopped for a pic with a bobbed duece.5 with our snorkeled yota and water to the top of the mirrors

@johndeere8594 yea I would never re-gear for 31's. Just generally what toyota did and folks have been doing for years. It was common for toyota to have 4.56s in the 2nd gen 4runners and even 4.88s with the tow package and automatic. Many people are trying to overcome the lack of horsepower and torque and get disappointed once installed. I have personally set up for customers hundreds of toyota gear sets and would have tried to talk them out of doing g 4.88's with only 31's. Pretty much a waste of money

We're not building rocket ships or anything in our home garages, but the calibration laboratory I worked at in my 20s would disagree about "multiple clicks" of a torque wrench. "Clicking" a torque wrench more than once is actually applying more torque, just not enough to matter in an automotive setting with the wrenches we use.

I think someone who calls two clicks over torquing has no idea how a torque wrench actually functions. If you're doing something that is requiring a minimum torque specification, chances are there will be a range of acceptable torque values. E.g. if the specification calls for a minimum of 1lb of torque, then the specification likely has a value of ~1lb~1lb'3oz's to account for manufacturing tolerances. Generally speaking there are close to zero manufacturing scenarios where existing within a 10% delta plus (e.g. specified value + 10%) will fall outside the allowed tolerances. I can think of a few esoteric applications where a manufacturing scenario calls for the deliberate failure of a part, e.g. explosive bolts, but for the most part those applications are so far removed from ordinary practice that they should not necessarily be considered a manufacturing / fabrication scenario a mechanic / fabricator should routinely plan or account for. Now, if you are in a manufacturing scenario where the tolerances are so close that a 10% delta plus is outside of the manufactured tolerances, then you most likely probably are not going to be using tooling from Harbor Freight, Lowes, Home Depot, or O'Reilly's Auto Parts. In all of those scenarios that I am aware of you will have an inhouse shop building the tools specifically to meet your Manufactuing tolerances. If you are in a job where a 10% delta plus is OUTSIDE of the manufactured tolerances and your employer does NOT have an inhouse machine shop manufacturing bespoke tools to meet those tolerances.... You need to quit and get off the premises ASAP while simultaneously contacting law enforcement. Just, trust me on this one. Get clear before someone (probably me) has to file an environmental impact report.
