I think Berhalter ball combined with our best performances(before Gregg came back '23) being placed behind paywalls hinders the growth of fans. I re-watched the '23 Nations League Semi and the final vs Mexico and Canada. That was some beautiful Soccer. I would argue the best Soccer we played these last 6 years. Gio was up top being the creator and he was taking the corners and got an assist from the corner. USMNT had the freedom to create. This is what was lacking under Gregg.

Gregg needed to go but this reality is this… our infrastructure, talent and Standing is a round of 16 World Cup knockouts . This team is no where close to 2000s in terms of best teams . Winning in Europe doesn’t mean anything because their teammates and club setup there had everything to do with them winning . This team lacks the heart toughness and grit of those teams. And omg the back lines , midfields and GK might eat this group alive. 5 million people watched Olympic trials . Again Gregg needed to go. But soccer is never going to go anywhere with the stranglehold of the other sports here. And again I’ll fight anyone that this is our most talented team. Club success hinges way more on their club coach, teammates and potential strengths and weaknesses of their leagues compared to national teams 17 million people watch a regular season NFL game. 38 million watched an average playoff game. It’s never going to be the top sport. It’s not gonna get close . Success grown, yes, but let’s be realistic Again Gregg deserved to get fired but NFLs over, the NBA was over . The same number of people watched golf as watched the national team. I’m all for Gregg being fired But we need to be realistic where soccer is, and isn’t . Where it can maybe get to, and where it can’t. And imo how incredibly flawed this team is at many positions - both starting and depth wise. You wanna make a deep international run? We need no less than 5 new starters

I really appreciate you acknowledging your previous position on GGG, others who had long-standing reasonable arguments for him to be terminated (or not rehired after the WC), and how your opinion has changed. I count myself in the camp of someone who has long believed he wasn't the right coach, and was failing to get the best out of the collective group (or better said, that he was not only failing to get the best out of the group but rather causing us to underperform with the talent available to him). Your comments really set you apart from a lot of other online personalities that are all-aboard the Berhalter-Out train over the last 2 weeks, but seemingly have minimized or ignored their previous support for him. Sometimes even from people who were very strong defenders of his rehiring. That is mainly people in the corporate media space, who seem to just blow with the wind, in my opinion. Keep doing your thing, in terms of the authenticity of your opinions. We don't always see things the same in a given moment, but I appreciate the way you articulate the justifications behind your opinions, as opposed to following a trend and/or relentlessly digging in on past opinions. In terms of the coaching options going forward, I fully agree that USSF needs to get this decision right in order for the full situation to be considered as a positive outcome. I'm not against Nancy nor Cherundolo, and I agree both would be improvements versus GGG. They each have winning pedigrees as managers, which GGG never had. My concern with them is the lack of international experience, which I really think matters when it comes to preparing a team which you don't get significant time with, and which needs to perform during a weeks-long tournament scenario as opposed to a months-long club season. I also think their head coaching experience only coming via MLS might be a detriment with a team mostly composed of players on European club rosters. Aside from GGG's tactical faults, I think he had faults with player management and the type of relationship development / expectation setting / accountability he created between himself and the players. I think someone with European club experience would do better in that fashion, to create a more productive environment that compared to what these players experience at their clubs. At the time of this comment, Klopp has already respectfully declined, so he's out. Matarazzo is an intriguing option, but I think someone who also presents some of the concerns I have with Nancy/Cherundolo (primarily a lack of international coaching experience). Personally I put a guy like Herve Renard at the top of my wish list. Along with other coaches that have a similar profile of getting international teams to punch above their weight. I'm curious if a couple of the coaches from Copa America and/or Euros, who helped mid-level teams perform well in those competitions, might become available in the coming weeks/months. If so, they would be good options in my opinion.

Love your optimism (and we need it), but I have very little faith in their capabilities to make the right decision. The USSF is rife with politics and special interests. That being said, there is an awesome pool of people to choose from so I think we could turn the ship around. Time is of the essence. We need to be building our team confidence up now. What we need is for the players to drop their egos, not be lazy, take pride, and buy in to the vision of the new coach. It needs to be all in. It don’t matter which coach you bring in. You can try Ferguson, Klopp, Ancelotti, Pep, Mauhrinho, and Alonso as a super squad of coaches and it’s not going to matter when the players are simply bad. You need genuinely talented footballers in the US system, and perhaps there are some on the come up, but outside of Pulisic, and occasionally McKennie, none of the players on this squad fit that criteria. These guys have no technical ability and are reacting to the game rather than making the game react to them. That’s why every scoring opportunity is squandered, because they are thinking about what to do, rather than already knowing what to do.

I’d love for our domestic coaching pool to be stronger, but it just isn’t. Simply facts. We have to go outside the US and MLS for this hire but the Federation also has to have a better plan to improve coaching and management in the US. The MLS has the money to fly the coaches over to UEFA clinics in the off season for certification. The US certification structure, as it stands right now, just isn’t strong enough. Ideally the US would have a stronger confederation above it but we are in CONCACAF unfortunately. I know some will dismiss this as Eurosnobism but sadly I just can’t trust the USSF or CONCACAF for coaching development right now. I’d obviously prefer the US to have the structure but that’s going to take some time and investment.

I do not hate Berhalter. I think he's not a good coach or leader. But one thing I will say about him is that he is a pretty good recruiter. That being said, he is clearly not suited to be the USMNT manager. I would absolutely love Klopp to be the manager obviously, but I think that's a pipe dream. Sadly, I think the US Soccer Federation is like most national team federations in that there's a lot of politics and corruption going on within its ranks. You only have to look at Berhalter's hiring and rehiring to see that. Of our realistic choices, I think Matarazzo would be our best choice. But since his name has already been mentioned by the talking heads on tv, it's likely going to be Cherundolo. Not sure how I feel about that. At least he has actual accomplishments as opposed to Berhalter. I don't know much about him as a manager, since as you said, LAFC spends more than most all of the other MLS teams. It's a little like how I feel about Zidane as a manager, though I have more belief in Zizou's coaching chops. Fingers crossed...

For sure I don’t think Berhalter deserves the seething hatred that he gets. Look at our team now from when he took over. That is partly because of him.

US soccer made a mistake and wasted two years with Gregg . He should’ve never been rehired and they to should resign on moral grounds if they had any integrity. Will see if they will hire a good if not great coach or they will hire another nepo hire or another buddy of them .

In terms of the USSF firing Gregg Berhalter, it would have looked terrible if they didn't. It is the right decision, but at the same time, it is a decision that they should have never had to take in the first place. While it is true that the 2022 World Cup campaign overall wasn't a failure, the team was unable to beat Wales in their group. The USMNT accomplished the minimum to get out of their group. Then, looking at the qualifiers, the USMNT ended up 3rd place, behind the worst Mexican National Team in history and tied in points with the 4th place that was Costa Rica. The USMNT failed to beat El Salvador, a national team that, without being disrespectful to them, has absolutely nothing to offer in terms of player quality when compared to the USMNT. Then, as Jake mentions, Gregg Berhalter never won anything with any of the teams he coached in his career. It would appear that his only accomplishment as a coach was to be the brother of one of the people in US Soccer at the time that he was initially hired. This is why people like me have been calling for Berhalter to be fired long before he was rehired. If you include the fact that the performance of the team regressed after he was rehired, I think I would have called for all USSF officials to resign if they decided to keep Berhalter after the failure at Copa America. As for who may replace Berhalter, I know that everyone would love for Jurgen Klopp to be the one, but I have to say that there is probably less than 1% chance of him taking over the USMNT, and this 1% does not take into account whether he would be interested in coaching the USMNT. As for the reasons, I am reading that people close to him says that he requires 10 million a year to coach a national team. The USSF probably has the money, but they won't spend that amount of money for a coach (though I am hoping that they prove me wrong) even as they said today that money won't be an issue in their search for a new coach. And talking about the USSF, as I heard in Fox Soccer, the USSF said that they will do a worldwide search for a national coach, and that money is not a concern. This is the exact same thing they said before rehiring Berhalter, so I am concerned that they will make a terrible pick again. As for who I think should be the next person, it depends on a lot of factors. If they have to pick someone from MLS, I would say Wilfred Nancy. I know that Jake mentioned he would still have some concerns from a stylistic standpoint. However, I would point out that Nancy has some important differences with Berhalter, being the first one that Nancy has won trophies and Berhalter hasn't. However, a more important difference is that the center forwards score very little with Berhalter Ball because he likes to utilize the wingers to create overloads on the wings in a way that results in the wingers being the ones taking the chances to score or the whole thing devolving into bombarding the area with crosses when winning the ball in the air is not one of our available forward's best strengths. On the other hand, center forwards in Nancy's team score significantly more. As Jake suggested, I think Cherundolo is not experienced enough. If they still want to hire an American but are not limiting themselves to MLS, Pellegrino Matarazzo would be the obvious choice, though he said as recently as last year that he is not interested in the job at this moment (maybe because Berhalter was the coach at the time and he wanted to be diplomatic). If the USSF is considering a foreigner outside MLS, there are several options depending on how much they are willing to pay and if they would accept a coach that does not speak English, last requirement which I believe is not as important as some people believe (Carlos Queiroz speaks zero percent Farsi, yet he qualified Iran to the 2022 World Cup before any other team in the world).

Count me out too. I highly appreciated your point of view and well thought game analysis. But now it seems you joined the Never Greggers. Being Happy for someone losing his job is classless. Even Fútbol Americas pretended better. Good thing Ale Moreno called them out. But yeah, I can’t watch your content anymore. I am happy we will get a new coach but gee…. I would recognize all the good GGG did too. Nice dance though 🤦🏼‍♂️ 🤦🏼‍♂️ 🤦🏼‍♂️

Important things need to change at our Federation; 1) The Federation must remove any and all MLS people starting with Garber. We need to expand our player pool and MLS is not an asset for doing that…..especially with no relegation. 2) Sporting Director Crocker needs to go back to Southampton or Wales. He is not a soccer man - he’s a monetizing man. 3) we need to hire a coach outside if MLS and with proven success. We need new ideas. 4) our best young players need options outside of the NCAA. Your list outside of Klopp is laughable. No to any MLS coaches - period!

You never once criticized Gregg Berhalter's tactics in any meaningful way. None of you guys did. I've been putting out articles since 2011. I pointed out for years that the team didn't pass and move properly, which Gregg fixed before the Colombia game. You all just insulted MLS players being in the staring lineup. You once said that you were terrified that Walker Zimmerman was starting vs Mexico since he was an MLS center back. He went on to play well in the World Cup. European clubs don't rate American players. You have coaching badges, but you blamed Sebastian Lletget for not being effective against a low-block of 10 guys when he was double-teamed along the sideline with no one making runs or moving into space or checking to the ball. Anyone who knew what they were talking about would've said Gregg puts attacking midfielders too deep with too many defensive responsibilities, so they can't link with the attack.
