Should've donated that money for a good cause. Like helping out the homeless or orphanage. He can afford a $900 dollar car payment and lives in a decent housing. So, what happens when the battery goes to sh*t again? Are you going to donate more money so he can get another TESLA? What I see here is you fell for their BS..I heard he wants the Cybertruck. So, you might want to donate 1k so he can afford it.

There is another thing to talk about besides the battery. Change the oil of your drive unit after 100,000 miles! Even when Tesla says it's good for a lifetime and the oil quality is monitored. An oil analysis showed that there is a significant ware, and new oil will help to reduce this significantly. Surly depends on your driving style... Please help to vote this up, so that the pro drivers will read this also.

He earned a lot of money driving 100k miles in a year. Replacing his battery for only $9k is a bargain compared to what he saved on oil changes and gas. A one year warranty on the replacement battery is effectively another 100k warranty. That alone is very valuable for him.

As a family that owns three Tesla's and having more than 20 Teslas throughout our extended family here in California, his experience is probably the most important that the Tesla community can learn from considering the motivation for the manufacturer to claim the absolute best case scenario with respect of their batteries is very high. I would love to see Dobson register his car with recurrent in order to monitor his charging and drive pattern in order to have targeted analytics that can be collected from his car. Also there is an application called scan my Tesla that I started using in my 2016 model x 90d that I think he could definitely benefit from. That would also show him the condition, the voltage and the capacity of the battery at all times while he's driving.

@lancerkind 4 ай бұрын
@@josevazquez3427 Given that charging an EV uses about the same energy as running a large AC, the California government can't actually stop you from charging your car however you want. The power company can request certain usage patterns and charge extra during peak hours. I've not heard any news about Californian government caring when and how many EVs you can use at home. I would be skeptical if someone said otherwise as they are probably being manipulative.

The battery engineer is correct, charging fast at higher %, it degrades the battery chemistry, because the battery is constantly been used. When you charge fast with higher frequency you are basically squeezing the degradation of several years in one year like in this case. You are basically doing a load test in a real scenario.

Hi. I donated previously to the gofundme for Dobson. Watching this video I think you all are reading too much into one data point. Sometimes there is a less than perfect battery pack and placing it under stress like this will cause that to become apparent and fail. Like any car part that was less than perfect. The solution is simple. Drive for the 1 year with the new battery pack warranty. Charge at home to 80%-90% then do one supercharger during the work day to 80% making sure the battery is preconditioned as appropriate. If there is no significant battery issues after 1 year, keep this Tesla. If you want to upgrade after 1 year for whatever reason, get an LFP battery Model 3. Charge to 100% overnight at home then do 90%-95% on supercharger (precondition as appropriate) during the day when running the ride shares so you get home at 10%-20% left. You will be fine. No need to run two cars. Don't over complicate the matter.

16:20 that is really annoying that Tesla is giving out mixed messages. On one hand they show data that supercharging does no more damage to a battery than charging at home. And then you have techs out there telling people not to supercharge more than 2x per month. That’s stupid. (I’m a TSLA shareholder)
@Mrtomtomman2000
@Mrtomtomman2000 7 ай бұрын
This summed it up pretty well if you are going to be mainly supercharging this will degrade your battery a lot faster. The best for Dobson is stay with his current model 3 for a year whilst the battery is in warranty and put another 100k on the battery. Try to supercharge maybe once a day between 30 to 80% to be on the safe side and then mainly charge at home. After a year get the LFP Model 3, which hopefully will be the refreshed model 3. I think weighing all the options are good. Maybe it might be good to create a community on X where people like Dobson can share their findings and the rest of us can have input too. We will then have an up to date report to share with everyone including Tesla, which will hopefully push innovation.

@@Sindrijo ^this. I watched a video that said for OPTIMAL battery longevity, start charging about 65%, and no higher than 85%. While this isn't an option for a 300 mile a day driver like this, this method is reportedly able to reach usable lifespans of 23 YEARS.

Kim thank you for trying to get answers. This is frustrating for sure. I’m a scientist and this issue still puzzles me. We need to know from the engineers who designed the battery because the data is conflicting. Fast charging should hurt the battery but the data we have so far isn’t showing the damage I would expect. Maybe that’s due to the cooling system. Maybe the heat from an extended 80-90% charge cycle is causing an issue. We don’t have enough data to know. I personally have 174,000 miles on my 2018 3 performance nmc and usually supercharge once a day up to 60-70%. Everything is still working for now but who knows.

I'd say start out at 100% charge with a new LFP model. Once it is getting low, supercharge to the minimum you need for the rest of the day. Then when your day is over go home and slow charge it to 100% overnight. Then repeat. You shouldn't need to charge that high at the supercharger to finish the day and it shouldn't be nearly as bad on the battery.

Tesla reaching out to look at the battery again has clearly nothing to do with the last video. ;-) I hope Tesla chooses to put a new battery in as a goodwill gesture, they've got the $9k, taking care of Dobson is the right thing to do. It has approximately 96% of its original capacity. I just bought it used, but so far, it is doing really well. I have put about 500 miles on it so far. The range goes down in the heat. But I am guessing I would get around 225 miles on a full charge. This is less than my 261 range, but AZ is very hot, and I drive fast.

Good to point out that Dobson's original battery, in his M3, was defective, Tesla NMC batteries last MUCH longer than what he got. Yes, the LFP batteries have longer cycle lives but, they have lower range so if your compare mile-to-mile cycle, the NMC is very similar to the LFP. LFP does sound better for him though, with his almost-constant charging and discharging.

Great video and a very worthy cause - but as said by several others, perhaps Tesla should step up and at least change the battery for free or provide a new car for Dobson to continue to promote through ride shares. Just a thought on the Supercharging - does Dobson select the superchargers as a destination as he is going to supercharge so that his car can know to precondition the battery for Supercharging. My guess is that he knows all available supercharging destinations so drives there without use of navigation and turns up at the Superchargers without the battery preconditioned, which may cause additional stress on the battery. Keep up the great work Kim and PJ!

Yes, having two Teslas is a must for a full time driver - working with one while the other one slow-charging at home. So it's like swapping batteries on the go which is what the robo-taxi procedure is most likely going to be like. Plus reducing wear and tear on both cars, hence longevity.

Wow, amazing support from the Tesla community! I wonder if you guys would support a ‘Dobson Drives?’ Quarterly update or a stand alone channel? The new 2024 M3 SR LFP has an 11% increase in range due to improved aerodynamics. That would ne just the ticket 👍

I heard that LFP should be charged to 80% for maximum longevity too. The 100% charge at least once a week recommendation is just to calibrate the state of charge / mileage estimation.

I think this M3 from Dobson has a NCM Battery. So it has only 1000 cycle till 80% DoD. Charging twice a day means 600 cycles in 300 days. LFP would be much better it has more than 3000 cylces

He could supplement home charging by supercharging to 50-60% before home charging. It should be easier on the battery at the lower percentage.

Exactly. Supercharge to 60%, then slow charge it to 80%. This should protect the battery for this Uber driver.

Kim, when I was purchasing my 2023 Model 3 Standard Range, the technical staff and the rep. adamantly told me not to charge at super charger more than once a week at the most. This was six months ago. I am trickle charging at home 90 percent of time, and occasionally I add 30 percent at supercharger just to get my battery acclimated to such high amp. That again is once every two weeks adding only 30-35 percent.

As someone who relies solely on the Supercharger network, I’m scared now. I was led on to believe it was okay. I live in an apartment and I don’t think I can get home charging. I charge 2-3 times a week. Roughly every 2-3 days. :/

Well what you can do now is make sure you don’t charge to 100% often and keep state of charge between 40-60%

Model 3 2022 LFP rwd 96k mileage and still 263miles at fully charged. Even it dropped to 234miles at one point but it came back up later slowly with a slower charge.

This is a tidbit i think they missed in the video, the LFP battery management system uses coulomb counting for state of charge readings. By letting the battery get to 100% for longer periods, it calibrates the management system. Without regular calibration it can lose track of battery state and give you an underrated range. The comment about lost range didn't say how he was charging, was it to 100 regularly? 🤷

honestly the hybrids are the best solution for today because battery technology is not developed enough for those kinds of usages,I dont think that gas powered vehicles will dissapear because of this.

It says in fine print: you cannot use the 6 mo free charging promo for rideshare. Yeah Tesla definitely needs to hire Dobson to test the robotaxi. And NO Tesla or any other EV company will never tell you these truths straight up - this would be bad for their business. Regardless, I, and we all should, still support Tesla. They'll get it right at some point in time. Or, a newcomer will.

yeah that hybrid/half and half plan sound really good to me. that way youre putting half the miles and wear and tear on a car instead of it all being loaded onto one vehicle.

Amazing story. Dobson is a champ! I think it boils down to cycles. Every technology from DVD players to EVs have a number of cycles it will run. Even the eject button had a number of cycles. This could be 10,000 cycles or 100,000 cycles. Supercharging twice a day will cut the time it takes to do those cycles in half.

22:30 I also have a late 2021 Model 3 SR+ with the LFP batteries here in NJ, and after 50k miles (normal commuting with occasional once-every-other-month Supercharging) I've lost about 15 miles of rated range at 100%, from 250 miles at time of purchase to now 235 miles. Current EV batteries are like Goldilocks if you think about it, they want to be kept 'just right'. Like you stated in the video, for best life expectancy for EVs it's all about keeping the batteries "healthy" all the time. The main culprit is allowing them to get too hot, too cold, or left at too high SoC or too low SoC. Charging batteries rapidly causes them to get very hot, and this is the main culprit in Dobson's ride-share situation. DC Fast Charging every once in a while is completely fine, but doing it every day (let alone multiple times per day) is absolutely straining the batteries and lowering their lifespan in the long run. Dobson's situation is very new and unique. If money was no option, I think he should keep his current 3 and also get a new LFP RWD 3. This way one can charge at home at Level 2 speeds, use the other until it gets low, & go back and switch cars to charge the other while he's out again. You've now eliminated the root cause of DC Fast Charging frying these EV batteries and will get so much more life out of them (at the cost of owning two cars though). Also like to add since it's mentioned at 28:56 that my LFP Model 3 has an 8 year 100,00 mile warranty. It was one of the first batch of LFP cars in the US before the "SR+" switched to "RWD" on the website (I got mine via a limited existing inventory that I think were battery packs shipped from Giga Shanghai and installed in Fremont 3s but don't quote me on that lol)

Model Y long range is the way to go if you're doing a ride share with it. You're right about the EV being two. That was what I endup doing with my Nissan Leaf when I started using them in 2017. Now I still keep one Nissan leaf with my Model Y long range.

This is where Neo's concept of doing a battery SWAP, so the batteries can be charged when not immediately needed, starts to shine. The battery can be charged however is best, and still swapped into a car faster than you can charge it.
