This was the first crossover between a rock singer and an opera diva in the history. Montserrat mentioned it was a great service towards the people who never listend to opera before, because their collaboration has definitely increased the popularity of this genre.Freddie with Mike Moran (the conductor in this vid) composed a whole duet album with beautiful music and lyrics. Pls, check out The Golden Boy and How Can I Go On at La Nit 88.

Freddie has many strings to his bow and he collaborated with Caballe,a legendary opera singer in her own right as he thought she had the best voice he had ever heard,they remained great friends up until he died. I always love the genuine surprise on faces when they hear how good the song really is.. Great reaction and you certainly give this due credit 👍

Montserrat Caballe (Kah-bay-e with the accent on the last e) was 'nicknamed' La Superba by her Italian fans. Her voice was incredible and, thank the gods, she did numerous recordings during her career, many of them of classical music, but also some of popular. She had the ability to sing high notes softly but clearly - never attacking them to reach them like other singers might - just almost making them her friends forever ("Come here, little note. Let's make people smile. That sort of friend, you know?) Freddie Mercury is unforgettable, a blazing talent in an equal but different muscial world. I am so so so so so SO glad that these two magnificent people decided to sing together.

Montserrat (or Montsey as Freddie called her) was a Spanish Soprano and one of his favourite opera singers. They did an entire album together, of which this is the title track. It was destined for the opening ceremony of the Barcelona Olympics but sadly Freddie died the year before. The whole album is a masterpiece, written by Freddie in collaboration with Mike Moran so if you want to check out any others you could throw a dart at the song list and it won’t matter which one it lands on. Freddie and Montserrat performed some of the songs at the La Nit festival, the Golden Boy is a standout but my favourite song off the album is La Japonaise. Wonderful watching your face during your reaction, priceless.

Here's a little backstory to this song. - 1987, Freddie was at home since after finding out that he had AIDS, he stopped touring with Queen and he didn't know what to do with himself. Out of the blue he exclaimed "God, I wish I could have gone to see (Legendary opera singer) Luciano Pavarotti!" And his long term boyfriend Jim went "What's keeping you, take a plane to Italy and go watch him!" - And so Freddie began to attend opera performances left and right. But it was when he saw Montserrat Caballé live that he stood up and exclaimed "That's the best voice I ever heard!" He made a few calls to her management and met her. The two got on like a house on fire. - But when the subject of recording an album together came to be, Freddie found out how closed minded the Opera world is, NONE of the symphony orchestras he approached wanted to work with him since he was a lowly pop singer. So, Freddie went "Well, if you want something done right, you have to do it yourself!" and recorded almost all of the music himself using synthesizers and samplers.. - Montserrat for her part said that she enjoyed the recording process, Freddie and Jim were perfect English gentlemen and treated her like royalty. But her fellow Opera singers weren't so accepting. Singer Ingrid Bergman condemned Montserrat for having done the album and snidely remarked after hearing about Freddie's death that he "Must have screamed himself to death." - Fast forward to the 2012, Queen's "We will rock you" musical was doing really well and the musical arranger of the show, Stuart Morley, went "Now let's record that album with a PROPER orchestration." and basically re-recorded the entire album using the London Symphony Orchestra, much like how Freddie had intended it to be.

There will never be another Freddie, and sadly never another soul like Monsterrat. Freddie was astounding beyond words . Never in History has there ever been a rock-Pop singer, songwriter, and brilliant performer, who could produce the greatest platinum selling Epics of all time with Queen , and then turn around and kick royal buttock, holding his own on stage with one of the greatest Opera Diva's of all time . That guy definitely earned every damn letter in the word GENIUS.

Actually Exercises in Free love was the demo he sent to Montserrat so that she could hear his capabilities at singing opera when he wanted to to this collaboration. She was the best Spanish opera singer, and she was so impressed with Freddie how he could change registers without having to work his way up or down to any given note, he could just jump there. If you listen to free exercises, please know, it's ALL Freddie, some first time listeners to that song actually believed it was Freddie on the piano and Montserrat doing the notes, but it wasn't, it was the demo Freddie had sent to her of his singing at very HIGH notes...lol

Freddie was in his life a big opera fan and also a big fan of Montserrat. And one of his greatest wishes was to sing a duet with her. And as they met together, Freddie told her his wish and she replied: "How many songs are normally on a Pop-LP?" And then she said: "We should make a complete album together, not only one song."

Caballe was reluctant to do an album with Freddy because, as she said, "Who wants to hear an old fat woman singing rock?" She was so very, very wrong.
@wnsafford1854

Montserrat was not reluctant to do an album with Freddie. In fact, it was she who suggested they do an album (instead of just the 1 song they'd agreed to, for the Olympics). Her concern was about live performances, to promote an album. She worried that he'd be uncomfortable performing with someone of her age & weight, though I never heard her use words like "old" or "fat" to describe herself. In one interview, recalling their conversation, she said something to the effect that she questioned him, saying "but I am older and I am big & you are not."

I get the point that you were trying to make (I think). It's a totally different genre of music to what you are used to seeing Freddie perform, but that is exactly what makes him so unique and so special is that he can turn his hand to this (very different type of music, which you can clearly see) but yet he's able to do it really well and doesn't look in the slightest bit out of place. The reason I think that this is possible is because Freddie has long had a love for Opera music in general and was already very aware of Monserrat Caballe.

Freddie Mercury minus his moustache. The song is called Barcelona, and is written by Freddie Mercury. After he had been approached by the IOC (International Olympic Committee) to write a song for the 1992 Olympic Games that were to be staged in the city. Monserrat Caballe is an opera singer who Freddie had greatly admired and who is from Barcelona funnily enough but she also became a friend of Freddie Mercury's. Sadly, Freddie Mercury obviously died before the Olympic Games.

You should do "The Golden Boy" by Fred and Montsy ... They recorded a whole album and it's epic! "The Golden Boy" has some gospel in it you might like!?

As an interesting modern comparison, find the 'Barcelona' by Ruhan de Toit and Amira Willighagen version done live in concert. The cell phone, blueish, out of focus version is the best, as compared to the studio version. She is a young amazing singer. I think she was around 14 when she performed this in South Africa.
