This song was recorded on first take. One of the most commercially successful songs ever. Astrud had never sung professionally prior to the recording - she literally was a shower singer. It rocketed her to instant (and may I say immortal) international star status. Ironically she was quite shy which imo shows in her stage presence. Ironically it makes her even more aloof and sexy...

Astrud was my neighbor when I lived in Manhattan. She was lovely and painfully shy all of the same time. My close friend was her biggest fan and worshipped her deeply. So I invited him to the building’s Christmas party where I was going to surprise him by introducing him to his idol. He didn’t show! So the next day I call and tell him what he missed. He was about to shoot himself. So I said no problem I’ll fix this. So I went downstairs to Astrud’s apartment knocked and told her that we wanted to take her to dinner. She was so sweet and said of course, but she’ll be touring in Europe for a month and she’ll call when she returns. A month passes and my phone rings and she says let’s go to dinner. So the next Saturday we took her to a small place in the East Village on a winter’s night and sat next to the fireplace and drank all night and sang songs, just the three of us. It was magical. Beforehand we met at her apartment for drinks. When we walked in, for Allan it was like walking into a shrine, in the hall of a goddess. I don’t think his feet touch the floor. He had a favorite album of hers. All I remember is that the cover art was a deep red. Allan walks in and sees the artwork on the wall and almost faints. A few weeks later we went to see her at a club called SOBs in lower Manhattan. Of course she ended the set with the Girl from Ipanema. I think the world stop spinning when she sang that song. A few days later, she said to me hey where were you that night and I said huh I was at a table right by the stage and she said oh I meant later afterwards backstage I said wait I was supposed to go backstage. She said yeah and hang with me and my friends . I just wasn’t cool enough to know. But the headline here is that she was a lovely lovely person and couldn’t have been kinder to a neighbor and a fan ❤

While Helô inspired the song, it was another Carioca who carried it beyond Rio. Astrud Gilberto was the wife of singing star João Gilberto when she entered an NYC studio in March 1963. João and Jobim were making a record with tenor saxman Stan Getz. The idea of cutting a verse on “Ipanema” in English came up, and Astrud was the only one of the Brazilians who spoke more than phrasebook English. Astrud’s child-like vocal, devoid of vibrato and singerly mannerisms, was the perfect foil for her husband’s soft bumblebee voice. Jobim tinkled piano. Getz blew a creamy smooth tenor. Four minutes of magic went to tape. A year later, the song was casting its quiet spell of sea and sand on the charts, washing past the Beatles’ “I Want To Hold Your Hand.” It peaked in mid-June at No. 5, selling over two million copies. “The Girl From Ipanema” went on to become the second-most recorded popular song in history, behind “Yesterday.” Covered by an A-Z gamut of performers.

I grew up on this era and saw many performances like this. It was not effortless; the timing was relentlessly practiced and flawlessly executed. the difference in the performances today and then was the performers today vs then want to be endlessly fawned on for even being able to come close to that performance.

@@euumapessoa5427 I respectfully disagree. The best singer for this song was Astrud's ex-husband, João Gilberto, sitting by himself on a simple chair, singing and playing his acoustic guitar. He was able to use his voice and the guitar's sound in a way that the listener wouldn't be able to distinguish between the sound of the instrument from that of his human voice. Tom Jobim was the composer and interpreter of that. He wrote it jointly with his friend, the poet and diplomat Vinicius de Moraes.

Tall and tan and young and lovely The girl from Ipanema goes walking And when she passes Each one she passes goes, ah When she walks, she's like a samba That swings so cool and sways so gently That when she passes Each one she passes goes, ah Oh, but he watches so sadly How can he tell her he loves her Yes, he would give his heart gladly But each day, when she walks to the sea She looks straight ahead, not at him Tall, and tan, and young, and lovely The girl from Ipanema goes walking And when she passes He smiles, but she doesn't see Oh, but he sees her so sadly How can he tell her he loves her Yes, he would give his heart gladly But each day, when she walks to the sea She looks straight ahead, not at him Tall, and tan, and young, and lovely The girl from Ipanema goes walking And when she passes he smiles, but she doesn't see She just doesn't see, no she just doesn't see But she doesn't see, she doesn't see, no she just doesn't see

No one has ever been so enchanting singing that song. Her seeming a little shy just amplifies her charm. (And it doesn't hurt that she was a sweet, warm voice with perfect pitch and phrasing.) The words depict a 2nd person narration, but nobody but nobody could BE the girl from Ipanema more than Astrud Gilberto. She embodies that girl by the way she walks and holds herself and sings - all the mannerisms you'd expect in that girl on the beach. Astrud certainly makes me go ahhhh....

It can seem kind of lame and pop-ish on a first listen. But listen again, realize it's not about the girl but about the narrator/observer, and the rich, deep emotion he feels, the painful longing for the thing(even if it's just a girl) he never really had and never will - it really captures "saudade" perfectly
