The team played like they had taken a triple dose each of both Benylin and Phenergan. They were listless; there was a complete lack of any sense of urgency, with not much threat from the wings or any creativity from the midfield. Okay, perhaps they were a bit brighter in the second half after a few substitutions but they came too late to make a proper impact. England have about as much chance of winning this as Cliff Richard has of shagging a bird.

I remember Graham Taylor pictured on the back page of The Sun with a turnip, turkey, cabbage and a swede on his head. When he was sacked the headline was 'That's Your Allotment.' And here, Ian Wright is trying to tell us that today's player has harsher criticism than those who went before.

That was newspapers when they sold, nowadays people have far more accsess to memes, personal accounts the platforms are far great and expansive than the Scum newspaper back in the day. Nobody under 60 reads newspapers anymore, 70 per cent of people log on to twatter for their news. The headlines created online are far worse than an animated turnip for a head, most consist of personal private lives, race gender etc, its far worse now because its not just the Elite schooled media triping it up, its people who absolve themselves of responsibilty when they hit the enter key.

Your comment summarizes it all! People tend to resent successful people, in a large way because they see their failures mirrored. You want to dehumanize people because of what the earn? So because they are millionaires they're no longer humans? It just shows your and a lot of people's mindset. How many footballers do you know from grassroots that haven't made it to their level? These people have basically sacrificed their life to football from when they were little to get to where they are. If you can do it, have a try and I don't mean in football in anything in your life. When you know the sacrifices made to get to the very top you won't be talking about their earnings. It's ok to give fair criticisms of players is th game but when you start talking of how much they earn and calling people at the top of the sport "trash", it just reeks of jealousy and conceit. If you are someone that has ever had to work from the bottom and put in the sacrifices to get to the top you won't be here complaining about people's salaries.

Getting through the group stage is a strategic goal. Clean sheets, test player combinations. Not always entertaining. Southgate has been slightly too cautious - too little, too late - but the goal is achieved. Tonight Mainoo, Palmer and Gordon came on, but I believe they should have been tested earlier. One thing was odd though - Trippier was replaced before Gordon came on. The two know each others well clubwise, so IMO they should be tested simultaneously. The team's problem isn't each player's individual skills, it's the teamwise interaction and "flow".

Criticism, pundetry, and the whole reaction is part of the game in my opinion. Not to say that was some of what pundits say are borderline abusive or simply moronic, but ultimately it all comes of a place of passion. They get upset and mad because they care about this national team so much. Ultimately, they have no control on the pitch so their opinion is trivial.
