That was Clive Davis to Cass Elliot's left. Both concert organizers. Reportedly Clive's reaction was more astonishing than Mama Cass'. Of Course Clive signed Janis to a recording contract and started her career.

At the time Mama Cass was arguably the best known female artist of the genre. Monterey Pop was Janis's first big venue and for most people there she was an unknown when she stepped on stage if I recall right.

This was the performance that got her signed to a recording contract, and was the first time she had performed at a concert this large. Cass Elliot of the Mamas and Papas was the woman in the audience, and she would later say that she was blown away by Janis and her performance. Janis left part of her heart and soul on that stage. I was lucky enough to see Janis perform at a small club before Monterey and was also blown away by her passion and presence. An unforgettable night for me.

That Lady so admiring Janis and was saying wow at the end was none other than musica award winning mama cass Elliot of the mamas and the papas. For her to be blown away by Janis ... was huge .Mama Cass could really relate to Janis here because she to had been badly scarred by someone she was in love with. I personally have always love black spirituals and the new orlean blue. Janis so adored betsy Smith that she saw that noone had evengotten her a tomb stone ( Look up betsy smith ) Betsy Smith was a blues singer. when Janis was making her way from Texas ( where she was born ) she started going to greenwich village in New Yor. A huge hub at the time for folks and blues and where a lot of musicians first made start. Alot of well know musicians started like that . huge stars like Jimmy Hendrix, the mama and the papas , Peter Paul and Mary , Bob dillon , even walt whitman and Mark Twain ( one of the top writers ever )

Janis was HUGELY influenced by live blues bands when she was a teen. This was her first big performance, in front of Mama Cass Elliott from The Mamas and The Papas (California Dreamin'). To say she killed it is putting it very mildly. It was all spontaneous too. Very natural to her.
