Excellent presentation, with clear concepts. I'm a 77-year old, retired electrical engineer. Had studied organic chemistry in my inter-science(today's 12th std). Though teachers in my college were good, the way you are explaining is superb. I really envy the milleniums. With teachers like you they need not go to any coaching classes.

This is best explanation I could find on KZfaq. Literally our school teachers just couldn't explain this in simple language. And moreover they didn't even bother tell us about the rules, priorities, etc. I think you deserve more sir. Love you from India.

My school teachers are even worse. They basically decided that we understood their lecture so they gave out a few half assed example out of the book to make us believe we got it. But we never did. It was like they described a memo instead of teaching us how it came to be

i am a professor of Organic Chemistry PhD course at OXFORD UNIVERSITY and from the following content, all is correct except he forgot to mention that naming rules should also be applied in giving the Nomenclature of the organic compounds. So the correct answer is 3,4-dibromopentanal and no capital letters, spacing or hyphen between letters /numbers should be applied. the hyphen should only be between a number and a letter.

the answer is 3,4-dibromopentanal. I thought it is 2,3-dibromopentanal but because of the priority list, and the aldehyde being the 2nd priority after acids, position number 1 is on the right, which is the aldehyde.

2,3-dibromo pentanal It is pentanal Because the ketone is at the end so it changes to an Aldehyde that is "al" will be added as the suffix of pentane( 5 carbon chain atom with a single bond) .This makes it a pentanal not pentanone Hope these was helpful? It is " 3,4-dibromo pentanal " 31:53 25:45 As we can see the c=o has more priority than Cl or Br, so the naming will start from the keton itself (c=o). ❤️

@@naniplayz2977 Answer: 3,4-dibromopentanal Not pentanone as Ketone cannot be placed at the end of carbon chains. Only Aldehyde i.e. -CHO can be at the end. Also, don't forget the priority list that we have to start the naming from the functional group! hope it helped :D

3,4-dibromopentanal (Functional group is an aldehyde, bromide is present on carbon 3 and 4, the chain is 5 carbons long and the carbons have single saturated bonds i.e. Alkane)

so like no one gonna correct some of these people and show the right one I'd say it's 3,4-dibromopentanal because: the aldehyde functional group takes priority over halogens longest carbon chain with aldehyde functional group prioritize the halogens land on the 3rd and 4th carbon. since aldehyde group is present suffix is going to be "al" is "dibromo" because there are two bromine halogens and "pentan" because 5 carbons are present in the longest carbon chain
