Fourteen of the world's top players, including the World Champion, competed in a round robin format that was the strongest tournament in the world at that time. The participants were (in order of ELO): Garry Kasparov (2800), Anatoli Karpov (2725), Boris Gelfand (2700), Vassily Ivanchuk (2695), Mikhail Gurevich (2650), Jaan Ehlvest (2650), Valery Salov (2645), Alexander Beliavsky (2640), Gata Kamsky (2640), Vishwanathan Anand (2635), Jan Timman (2630), Jonathan Speelman (2610), Artur Yusupov (2605), and Ljubomir Ljubojevic (2595). It was a second phenomenal victory for Ivanchuk who finished clear first with an impressive 9.5/13, even winning his head to head match with second place and world champion, Kasparov.

I feel like Ivanchuk's games are stories told on the board. There's just something so poetic about him surrendering a pawn to trap Gata in a self-made prison only to sacrifice another one to free him so that he walks right to his own execution. It's masterful and brilliant... yet so cruel.

2:27 - Incorrect The move h3 isn't called the Anti-Marshall. The move a4 is the Anti-Marshall. The move h3 in this position is doing several things. 1- It is high class waiting move. 2- It can be seen as great transposition move to persuade black to go into main line Ruy Lopez. 3- It can be seen as a King Loft move. The move h3 is doing all of the above. I will explain each point so you can understand. I will start at the beginning! The idea of the Marshall Attack is to hold back the D pawn. The main line for Black is to play the move d6 which is a more tame move defending the e5 pawn In the Marshall Attack, Black tries to hold back the D pawn with aggressive intention in mind! Black wants to play the move d5 at the appropriate time to violently open the black position when Whites Queen side pieces are congested. The violent move d5 comes with a sacrifice of 1 black pawn, but it has dangerous King Side Attacking chances. White has to defend very carefully. A misplay could result in white getting checkmated. The question's which often gets asked is when is white's pieces congested? When is going in for this violent idea appropriate? The white pieces are congested when white plays the typical move that was considered the main line move at the time. The main line move at time was c3. The move c3 blocks the development of the white knight on b1. In addition, the d1 pawn hasn't moved which hinders the white pieces on left side of the board to develop. These 2 pawn c3 & d1 are temporary congesting white queen side pieces. This allows black the chance to go for a quick King side attack. Black gives up a pawn to gain attacking initiative on white. White in turn is up 1 pawn, but is behind in development. Black is banking on the idea that white queen side pieces are not going to help much in the defense of the white King! In addition, White might not defend properly with the few pieces he does have available. If white slips up, black could net his lost pawn back or even net the White King! Years later, players began trying to avoid the Marshal Attack because the idea of trying to defend properly with the white pieces is unappealing for most players. There is nothing wrong with playing the white position and white has resources to defend + has 1 pawn up. If white can defend, White can use the extra pawn to potentially win the game in the late/end game The question is can white make it to end game? Will white get check mated in the middle game before the game reaches the end game? For the above reasons, the white players decided to try other moves. Players didn't want to risk going in for something like this. There is nothing wrong with going for this line, but you better be a good defender. Obviously, not every chess player is a good defender. Some players are better at attacking. This is why other moves began to be played instead of c3. The move a4 was created/played. The move a4 is called the Anti-Marshall which challenges blacks pawns on the Queen side. Black has to respond to this move which stirs the game away from the Marshall Attack. The move a4 is a cheeky move by white which says "Im playing the white pieces. The white pieces have first move initiative. I am an aggressive attacking player. I'm going to attack you first before you attack me." The move h3 was another move created/played. I will now explain the first reason behind the move 1- The move is high class waiting move. The move h3 forces black to make a move that reveals blacks intentions. If black plays d5 after the move h3, they show there hand. This helps white because white hasn't played c3, yet. This means the white knight on b1 can go to c3 which prevents white from being completely congested! The Marshall Attack is giving up a pawn to capitalize on white's congested queen side pieces. The move h3 isn't congesting white. This is why Black side players don't play d5 in response to h3. The move h3 isn't Anti-Marshall as Agadmator said in video. The move h3 is bidding time for white which dissuades black from playing d5. Giving up a pawn when white isn't congested sort of defeats the purpose of the Marshall Attack. I wanted to make the correct so everyone doesn't get false idea's of the move. After the move h3, Black players have tried a few different moves. The 2 popular moves are d6 or Bb7. The move d6 gives white the chance to transpose back into Ruy Lopez main line. White can play c3 after d6 which transposes the line. This is how we come to my second statement. 2- The move h3 can be transposition tool. White has dissuaded black into going for d5. Thus, Some Black side players go for d6. The move d6 is a more tame move which isn't bad. The move d6 has been played for hundreds of years. The alternative move black has tried is Bb7. The black side players have been playing Bb7 as a counter move to whites move "h3". The black side players believe Bb7 punishes white for playing h3. The black side players have argued the move h3 is wasted move. So let's explain why this argument exists! The Bb7 main line isn't considered to be strongest continuation. However, white players don't play h3 in the main Bb7 line. In this situation, white players were playing h3 to dissuade black from playing d5. Black responses with Bb7 and they tell white your move h3 is a wasted move in the Bb7 line black is now playing. Than the white players give counter argument! They say h3 dissuaded d5 + it is still a useful move because it gives the white King Loft. The White King can always run to h2 incase of an emergency. The move h3 opens up h2 for the white King. This is how we come to my third statement. 3- the move h3 gives white King loft/escape square. Essentially, this is the overall battle of ideas & plans which is going on in the position. It is very easy for people to get confused by these different idea's. This is why I wanted to make the correction. I think Agadmator does great videos. I think Agadmator simply got confused. If you don't play the position exclusively, you can be confused by the subtle differences in the position. It is a lot of information which can be overwhelming at times. However, every move generally has a reason behind it. As a chess student/lover, I try to help spread the info. I love the Ruy Lopez. I have played it for a few years. This is why I know some of these idea's. It's like my baby. It's my go to line to play!

the best things that you have ever said, #8:12 "this is a very sad knight" also #16:26 "I don't think I was ever sorry for any piece like this poor knight" man I really enjoyed this, the way you described this knight it was simultaneously crucial and also enjoyable and beautiful just like the game itself, Thanks man for creating these beautiful chain-series of Marshal Attack videos, I know most of your subscribers can play chess well , but to be honest and I don't exaggerate at all, but I think or I'd better say I believe watching your videos is like reading a very accurate book about chess but the difference is yours is more enjoyable, Thanks again

Marshall innovated hundreds of attacks, gambits, and counter-gambits. Most have fallen by the wayside. But not what was originally called Marshall's counter-gambit to the Ruy Lopez. Over the years, the extra words were dropped, and now it is simply *THE* Marshall.

I'm also glad you go into other variations and I'm rather impressed by your upload rate and enthusiasm that you keep bringing into the videos and tactics. It seems that Ivanchuck played on Kamsky' unwillness to sacrifice. As i understood the sacs do exactly that - buying breakthroughs and general disorder for the price of material equilibrium..

I literally felt like flagging this video for cyber mobbing XD What a sad knight it truly was. Pained to watch him play it fore and back. God knows how desperate Kamsky must have felt.

Just my two cents: you should have showed the follow up move Bh2+ which lines up the K + Q and which negates the QxP sac in the old Marshall. (Bh2+, Kg1, Bg3) Love your chess series!

the force of that f4 Pawn is massive. Like Agadmator said, that rook on e2 is worthless

Funny thing is the game ended with the knight hanging, abandoned by the king waiting to be killed by the rook, and any move he makes also gets him killed. Sad knight :(

Kamsky should have given up on that sad knight and continue playing, but Ivanchuk is a great player, definitely my favorite, so there's no hope for young Kamsky :D

Hello Mr. Agadmator. I love your work. Thanks for such a big collection for us. I have a really weird hypothetical QUESTION FOR YOU and I think if anyone can answer this, it is you as you have analysed almost all the great players. So, Suppose all the great chess players of their time all of a sudden simultaneously come in their top form (by top form I mean the form at the time of their career peak) who will come up to be unbeatable by others.

as far as i can see there are 2 pieces that are blocked in (the dark bishop and the knight ) so Gata should have done something about it , for example , after protecting the f3 pawn with the e2-f2 R , he should have gone for g3 pawn and there is no danger for white if the two pieces gets developed in the right places

The side line you give in the Marshall ( Ivanchuk/ Kamsky) where the B goes to g3 is a blunder, is it is but instead of Bg3 the best move is Bh2! white has to play Kf1 and then black would play Bg3

agadmator, I enjoy your excellent commentary! BTW, Black can defeat that Q x f7 + trap. Play Bh7 + first, then play Bg6.
