Here’s another cool odd gauge shotgun I have. The 24 gauge used to be a standard shotgun gauge back 100 years ago, but today it’s mostly unheard of. There are a few manufacturers who still produce very high end hunting shotguns in this gauge as well as the 32 gauge.

Caliber 24 has always been great for medium hunting. A wonderful rifle is the Beretta 412 folding, but for some reason this caliber has also disappeared in Italy and yet the caliber 24 is an excellent choice because it has a very manageable power. Nice video. Thank you.

Smoothbore long guns in 24 gauge were quite common among frontiersmen during the flintlock era as they could be used to shoot both a solid .56 caliber patched ball or shot. I believe that most US Army foraging guns from the mid to late 1800's were 24 gauge also. My first sxs shotgun was a Belgian made exposed hammer 24 gauge with which I hunted countless quail and hares and I remember it with fondness as being a sweet gun to hunt with. A good option for those people who want to venture into these rare chamberings are the full brass shotshell hulls made by Magtech and available through Midway and other venues.

24 gauge is very cool. Check out my other videos I’ve got a couple reloading videos for it using fold crimps. Egyptian snider rifled were converted to shoot 24 gauge shotshells at the turn of the 20th century and those go for around $400 today. Very cool guns. American arms made 24 and 32 gauge over unders in the 90’s and were available to the American market, but that’s the first time in roughly 60 years you could get a new gun in either gauge here, and the last time you could get a new one. Very high end gunmakers still chamber both gauges though, but are incredibly expensive.

I had the pleasure of shooting a 24 gauge Italian SxS that my landlord many years ago loaned me to clean and shoot. It was a wedding gift from his father in law back in 1960. The wood was immaculate as well as the finish. Couldn’t find a manufacturers I’d anywhere on it. Just proof marks. Could have been one of literally dozens of small custom manufacturers back in Italy back then. He gave me a big box of about 200 shells to shoot. Took it to the trap range. Needless to say drew quite a bit of interest. That and those old rounds were quite smoky too. Surprise I wasn’t turned in to CARB! (California Air Resources Board)

I've got an old Iver Johnson that's probably as old as that one. It's in 12 gauge but I had to put new furniture on it front and back. It looks like it's been rust treated but I'm sure that's from where it was sitting in my closet for a long time. The only thing about it, there is no serial number anywhere and it doesn't look like they've been scratched or ground off. The only thing I found on it was initials igb. If you're interested contact me and I will tell you more about it. Have a great day and stay safe and keep your powder dry! P. S. It has a wrapped Barrel and I was told to shoot only black powder but this was after I had shot conventional shells and it still shoots just fine. Although it doesn't have a front bead anyway that was just FYI Prairie

Yours is likely about 15-20 years older than mine if it’s got a Damascus barrel. Light target loads are fine for it, 1 ounce loads at 1145 or 1200 but probably not anything more powerful. Pyrodex would be great for that gun. Very cool.

Just another thought on peculiar shotguns you have .22 shotguns too.They are like .22 rifles but smoothbore and some of the ones made in Europe have a ridge ahead of the chamber to stop .22 bullets being fired.I don't know what would happen if you put a bullet in or one of the CCI mini shells with the plastic cap heads but I think that they'd be ok as the plastic would shatter but a bullet would jam on the ridge.The one I had was made in France and I only fired crimped shells with number 12 shot.Pretty feeble.

Pretty much anywhere that sells ammo. Midway, ballistic products, rst, grafs, luckygunner, several more sites. Sometimes an actual shop will have it in person. Federal and fiocchi sell it. You can buy brand new primed hulls from ballistic products if you want to load your own. Ammo is actually very easy to find and always in stock, the guns are rare though. I’ve also got two 32 gauge shotguns on my channel if you want to check it out. Reloading videos too. There is a 24 and a 32 gauge over under shotgun on gunbroker right now for sale. I saw that gun on GI and thought about buying it but for what it is and the price it was I passed since I already have a couple 24s anyway. You can load 24 gauge in 1oz with regular smokeless powder and it’s fine, ive got a book with 24ga reloading data in it and there’s multiple 1oz loads on the 24ga list. I haven’t gotten around to buying a 28ga MEC jr and modifying it to 24 yet though, I don’t know that I wanna spend the money for that when I can just take out a 20 or 28 gauge anyway. I’ve got some 28 gauge shells loaded 1oz and they work fine too. I’ve also got a double barrel 8 gauge hammer gun you spoke of too, my shells are loaded 2oz over black powder for the Damascus barrels.

Do you care to email me some photos of the 24 gauge load data? I have the bpi manual but most of that loads are pretty light except for the single 7/8 ounce load. I fold crimp my hulls using a MEC 28 gauge crimp starter that I opened up a little, a little skeeters 16-24gauge chamber insert as the final crimp tube, and final crimp with the primer seating punch of my lee load all 2. I load my 32 gauge that same way. Anyway if you could send me some data I’d really appreciate it. My email is tylermcdavid4570@yahoo.com

@@theshotgunscientists yea I can take pictures of it, I bought the small bore book from Ballistic Products I think it was, it’s got a small section of a few 32ga loads too. In my personal opinion, the 32 gauge is really more worth the effort than the 24 is. If you’ve got a 20 and a 28 you just don’t need the 24 but the 32 has the recoil of a 410 with a much better shot pattern so my wife likes it for skeet shooting.

Years ago, I was window shopping an ammunition website and clicking on "shotgun" brought up 24ga and 32ga options. I'd never seen or heard of such a thing, so I clicked on both, but there was no listing of any ammo for either one. I did some light, casual searching around and still could not find any information about these gauges. Fast forward to February 2023. While perusing another 2A website, I see 24ga listed on one and 32ga listed on another. I quickly went over to gunbroker and still, no guns to look at. BUT... this time, there was ammunition to be had and I ordered a box of each just for giggles, and knowing I'm probably the only guy in my county with such rounds in his possession. When I ordered the ammo, I really had no intentions of seeking a gun in either gauge but after watching this video, I might be tempted to look a little harder. The only thing that has thrown me off is why the shell is labeled as a 2 1/2" instead of a 2 3/4" shell. They both stand the same height! Another surprising fact is that I bought the box of 24ga for less than any local retailers were selling 16ga, 28ga, or 410. The 32ga was slightly more than some 16 and 28, but far less than current 410 prices.

I spent years looking for my 24 and 32 gauge guns. Incredibly rare these days. They are actually 2.5” length, they’re roll crimped which just makes them look longer. If you take a fired 2.75” shell and one of the fired 2.5” 24 or 32 gauge shells, you’ll see the difference. Roll crimped shells well almost always be longer than fold crimped 2.75” shells. A roll crimped 2.75” shell is the same length as a folded 3” shell. Factory loads for both gauges are kinda light for the shell, reloading or handloading for them is the way to go.
@kennethgoin628
@kennethgoin628 Жыл бұрын
@@theshotgunscientists Great information! Thank you! I'm not a handload/reload guy. My time is spread really thin so it's just easier to pick up factory loads. Even if I were to find a 24 and/or 32ga, I don't think I'd be into them enough to get into reloading. However, it would be nice if they were loaded with #6 shot. It would instantly make the gun a little more versatile for use. Even though I have seen #8 take out small game, there's not much range available for anything worth shooting.
