Moral of the story guys: Don't be arrogant, PREPARE for your interviews, and respect the application process (Sophie) KNOW ALL the requirements for each and every college application (Mike) SHOW, don't tell, have humility, express yourself honestly and completely (Diana, Michelle) There's a reason why Sophie and Mike got rejected, while Diana and Michele got accepted.

@@Maginox It’s harder to get in from a “feeder” school. The standards are higher since they need to be the best in a school where everyone is excellent.

I am so happy for Diana and Michelle! They worked their butts off and Hunter College High School is one of the most prestigious schools in NYC. My brother was accepted there but my mom messed up his papers lol. Anyways, I will try to work hard and get accepted into Yale too!
@asmrsean78976 жыл бұрын
Good luck on getting accepted to Yale! Trust me, I got into Columbia Law School for the Class of 2011, and you have to put TONS of hard work. I went to the Bronx High School of Science, and in general, the competition there can stress you out, but anyone can do it. Diana and Michelle attended really good schools too. I went to Hunter College's Middle School Program but I didn't go to the High School because I was accepted to BxSci.

Is there anyone here in the comment section Asian or at least half Asian? What you saw on the show is pretty much what we all go through. For those that actually get accepted into an Ivy League they should really count their blessings. All throughout schooling for me there was that pressure to do more than well or awesome it had to be perfection. It can drive one to insanity. Because as we all know there is no such thing as perfection. I'm still dealing with thoughts running through my mind like "if I were to try harder or if I were to go to an Ivy League school would my mom love me more? Would I be in a better place in my life right now?"
@DamianTran5 жыл бұрын
Fellow Asian American here. Was a 3.0 average Asian student and went to a state university since my GPA wouldn't get me into a public ivy league lol. But now a days I don't reflect on I wish I try harder, just learn to use the lemons I have and turn it into lemonade. But seriously most of the Asian kids I went to high school that were like these students don't always end up successful, if anything more in student loan debt.
@lightlamp99575 жыл бұрын
As a British Asian, it makes me distraught to see the high pressures those individuals and all who are expected to achieve the 'best of the best'. The anxiety and stress it causes must be so painful. I myself have been through the competitiveness and stress when felt I disappointed my mum. It was almost I was compared to certain people and would feel constant pressure to be 'better'. I would feel guilty if I didn't follow what she wanted me to do. But I had enough and I quit everything I didn't want to do and firmly made my own decisions. I'm now doing what I would like to do which is to not highly achieve, not to please people but to get decent qualifications and really focus on what's important in this life.

The obsession with name brand colleges is childish and somewhat insane. Where you go to college does not have as much of an influence on future success as these people would have you think. If going to one of these name brand colleges means huge debt, I'd say go for the lesser known college that offers a full scholarship. I graduated from two top 25 ranked universities without debt and without spending much.

This video series was so great. As a parent who has just gone through this process with my child, these videos really shine with authenticity. I think all of these four students will have interesting and successful lives. It is unfortunate that they obsess about the Ivy League so much, because it is not the most important thing. Mike, even though his SAT scores are lower, has such a great attitude about life, and that will carry him very far. Truly, they EACH have their unique charms!

The reason people like Sophie care so much about Ivy League is because pretty much almost all Asian parents are like, "Harvard. Harvard. Harvard," from the day you're born. xD Kids start to think that Ivy League is the best place to go, and because of how Asians have to work to get there. I would know. ._.

Wow, what a great documentary! I've always been fascinated but he college process and the Ivies in particular. It's nice to see a show that examines this, as talking about what SAT II to take aren't exactly common conversation topics among my group of friends. Does anyone know about another show like this? Or even a website where these topics can be discussed? Thanks!!

(Continued...) So I accepted National University of Singapore and will be joining the 2014 intake after my 2 year's National Service. (Singaporean males over the age of 18 needs to serve the nation for a period of 22 - 24 months) What I worry more is whether am I able to survive University and even pursue in further studies after that. I remembered clearly something my lecturer once said,"...you guys of such calibre can easily get into uni. What matters more is whether you can survive or not!"

It is possible, if you choose TTO (Tweetalig onderwijs - Bilingual Education), not at all schools, at some. At our school we have to possibility to do 'Cambridge ESOL Examinations', which is a couple of notches above that, as you get useful diplomas. However that's not the tough part. The tough part is, is that in Holland you have a lot of schools ONLY for gifted children, which will ALL go to university, while in England and America you usually have high schools with smart and dumb together

I feel bad for Sophie because I felt like she had the test scores and the long list of extra-curriculars to get into an ivy league school. I wonder what her school grades were like. Mike was not getting into Columbia period. He certainly didn't have the SAT's (1400 out of 2400!? fugetaboutit!) get in, and how could he forget about the SAT II requirements? Getting an interview doesn't mean anything; colleges set up interviews randomly with applicants.

I'm from Singapore. I took my 'O' Levels when I was 16 back in 2008. I had a B3 for English, 2 A1 and 5 A2. I didn't go to a junior college (pre-university high school). Instead, I went to pursue my Diploma in Aeronautical Engineering in Singapore Polytechnic. I've recently graduated from it and was accepted by both National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technical University (the 2 which I applied out of the 4 public universities in Singapore) to read Mechanical Engineering. (TBC...)

@aznboi1398 I really don't think it's anything to laugh at because there is no doubt that her parents (especially her mom from what I can tell) completely fucked her up before she had any chance to find her own way. Their whole 100% result-oriented, "you're a failure unless you meet our standards" attitude destroys a kid's self-confidence & self-worth. I'm willing to laugh at her parents for being ignorant as sh*t, but I feel nothing but sadness for Sophie.

The US education system is different than most other countries education system. What you do immediately after high school is call undergraduate. You can obtain a degree (Bachelors) in whatever you want, except for law or medical. It is almost like high school again, you take all the standard courses and then towards your third and fourth year you sort of specialize in one area. Once you are done with that you can apply to a graduate school to get a masters or a doctorate in, once again, anything you want. This time you are allowed to get a medical or law degree, but you face admissions again.
