The interesting thing is these were the templates for the big stadiums. The Yale Bowl was the model for all the bowl stadiums, Harvard Stadium was the model for U shaped stadiums, Franklin Field’s upper deck was ground breaking when it was built. Yes they are stuck in time, but it is like seeing a Model T or something. The features in modern stadiums go straight back to these.

Harvard, Yale & Penn have been used by the NFL for full seasons. Harvard: Boston Patriots (1970), Yale: New York Giants (1/2 of 1973 & all of 1974), Penn: Philadelphia Eagles (1958-1970)

Franklin Field: the oldest continually operating football stadium in the United States. Also, the track is important because of the famous Penn Relays.

The wall and walk way around Princeton Stadium is a tribute to the old stadium. They built the new stadium inside the walls of the old stadium. A interesting detail about Harvard Stadium. Since it was one of the first all concrete and steel football stadium, its inside dimension help to set the size of the football field as we know today.

It looks incredible for being so simple and being built so long ago and haven't really done much since and it holds up. I love Harvard football stadium

The rose bowl was modeled after the Yale bowl. There are long tunnels you have to walk through to get into the seating at the Yale bowl, which is kind of fun, but on the other hand there are no bathrooms or concessions inside the stadium. Everything is set up outside.

I live in New York City and have been to a few games at Columbia. It's an unique place to watch a game.

I've been to Harvard Stadium. The place has no seats. You just sit on concrete. A scary incident happened last time I went there a month ago. A teenaged girl slipped on the stairs and wacked her head. She was bleeding bad. When medics got to her they bandaged her head and she ended up walking down assisted. I hope she made it

Harvard's stadium was the prototype for the original Chicago Soldier Field. I believe Harvard's stadium may even have been called "Soldier Field" at one time, since there's a parkway nearby with that name, and the newer soccer/lacrosse stadium also bore that name.

Missed a lot about Franklin Field, home of Penn. It was the home of the Eagles for twelve years, and as for the track, it's arguably the bread and butter of Franklin Field, home of the Penn Relays, the largest track meet in the nation.

Franklin Field had a capacity as high as 78,000. The Eagles played there for 12 years including their 1960 championship before the Vet opened in 1970.

For as much shit as many of these stadiums get. It’s pretty cool that many of these are still open and have the same or similar design as they did decades ago. Unfortunately I don’t live out east but I would love to catch a game at one of these. I’m sure the tickets are cheap lmao.

As a European, Harvard Stadium seems to be the only stadium in the USA that has looked after and preserved it's old architecture. What happened to Soldier Field was a disgrace.

Unfortunately, Soldier Field has to compete with brand new NFL stadiums, while Harvard Stadium only has to contend with the rest of the Ivy League.

I had season tickets to Harvard Football for a couple of years. The biggest problem with the stadium is the stairs. They are very steep and a person can take a big time header.

Dude, the New England Patriots played at Harvard when they were still the Boston Patriots before relocating to Foxboro in 1970 to play at the old Schaffer Stadium. The Patriots had no stable home stadium back in the day bouncing from Fenway Park,, Harvard Stadium, Nickerson Field (the old Boston Braves Stadium that Boston University bought also hosted Boston Breaker USFL games for one season) and Alumni Stadium. Harvard is so old school it doesn't have seats.

Franklin Field I've been to while my aunt was in the hospital last year, and because of the number of visitors at a time because of the mandates due to covid, I got a free complimentary ticket to the home opener against Colgate i happened to be at the same day, and it gave me something to do since me and my family were visiting my aunt for the entire day and knew it was going to be a while to get to see her since the new Pavilion hospital was across the street, and Franklin Field used to be the home of the Eagles from 1958-1970 and was used as a stand in for Veterans Stadium in the Disney Movie Invincible about Vince Papale who played for the Eagles and had the honor to meet him at Franklin Field they have a unique display including a mural and statue of Eagles player Chuck Bednarik

I don't think you give Harvard Stadium enough credit. When it was completed it was the first reinforced concrete structure - that's structure, not just stadium. So both in its design and in its construction it is historic. Many people also considered Harvard Stadium to be the best stadium in the nation in which to see a football game due to its sight-lines,

The Ivy league stadiums or in particular just the schools themselves are kind of cool just because how old they are. I was watching a show on TV the other day about colonists who came well before the founding fathers were even born. It was like 1683 or somewhere in that timeframe so it was either Boston or Philly. But the colonists move in and 8 years after they move in they build a college. It could have been Boston college but I think it was Ivy league so there's a good chance they were talking about Harvard. It's just kind of a crazy thought to think back then people who lived right by there were probably standing around having conversations like, "yeah... They're opening this school down the street. I think it's called Harvard. I'm thinking about joining to be the first class ever at this Harvard place. I might do it. I might not. You know... whatever. We'll see how I feel in the fall. This whole city has only existed for 8 years so who really knows if that school is any good anyway." It's just funny to me because way back then there definitely had to be some people who turned that down like it was nothing. There are definitely parts of those school buildings that look almost the same as they did originally too.

The Yale Bowl also features the Walter Camp gate leading up to the stadium. Walter Camp, a Yalie, is known as "The Father of American Football." The Yale Bulldogs also has an impressive number of national championships

You didn’t mention the NFL connection fo a few of these stadiums! * Franklin Field (Penn) was home to the Philadelphia Eagles from 1958 until 1970 * The Yale bowl was home to the New York Giants in 1973 and 1974 * Princeton 's Palmer stadium was a traditional location for the New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles annual preseason game as it was halfway between the two cities.

You made a mistake concerning Columbia’s stadium. The original stadium in 1932 was named The Baker Bowl. It was a wooden stadium for years. It did seat 32K back then. Columbia replaced the stadium in the late 70’s. The current stadium is Lawrence Wien Stadium (At Robert Kraft Field). So you got that wrong on the information about this stadium.

@@seansmith8920 No, that was in Philly. Columbia played at Baker FIELD, not to be confused with Bakersfield CA, though there WAS, I believe, a nearby bar called "Bakersfield."

I’ve been to every one of the Ivy League stadiums and to choose Dartmouth’s Memorial Stadium as the worst is just plain wrong. Cornell currently has seating on only the home side of the stadium which is terrible for visiting fans. Brown is so outdated that there are no urinals in the men’s bathroom, just a long trough like you would see in a barn. Yale is historic, but you have to exit the stadium for food, beverages, and bathroom facilities. I also like Harvard’s for its historical architecture but you literally sit on concrete steps. Franklin Field is also very cool but the bigger stadiums like Penn, Harvard, and Yale look ridiculous during games because Ivy games generally only average 8-10 thousand fans and these stadiums seat somewhere around 50 thousand. My personal favorite would be Princeton. It’s newer and gives you a stadium feel but seats less than 30 thousand.

It’s amazing how these schools didn’t have the foresight to see how much revenue Football could create. Yeah it’s great to be academically prestigious. I’m sure Alabama, Georgia, and Michigan are wiping their tears away with the dollar bills they are raking in.
