The Battle for Iwo Jima would becoming one of the hardest fights of WW2 for the US Marines. This is the story of one of the fiercest battles of the Pacific Theatre of the Second World War in 15 minutes.

It's often forgotten how much of an amazing military strategist Kuribyashi really was. The man basically had to teach an entire island of soldiers a completely different form of military doctrine. Instead of the near brainwashed way they had been fighting, he really did make those men pay for every inch of land...

His men fought with so much ferocity that he inadvertently forced the Americans to come up with alternative solutions to end the war, which ultimately caused the Nukes but spared the both Japan and the Allies the horror of losing millions in a full-scale invasion of Japan.

@@MrJames1034 wrong the a bombs were already being made and if you research the US had made a plan to invade the homeland so the battle changed little except access to airfields it was the Russians potential expansion into China Korea that really prompted the use of the a bombs it was a display of power to Russia a warning if you will the Korean war happenedas by then they had the bomb so the US no longer had a deterrent to expansion

he was very realistic about the situations, and was actually sent to Iwo Jima to die because of his anti-war sentiment because he already knew Japan has no chance of winning. Nevertheless he perform his duties well. Probably more of a "samurai" than the rest of his compatriots who prolonged the war for nothing.

My grandfather was the navigator for one of the 4 destroyers first in to drop the frogmen on the beach. I miss hearing him tell the epic stories from his Career. That same destroyer the USS BARR was also sent to Nagasaki 2 weeks after the bomb. I still have the photographs of the rubble.

Japanese army and navy commited horrible atrocities, but I also have to commend them to their fanatical resistance they kept even when death was all but certain. These guys were brave men.

In reality they were scared shitless. Japanese survivors of american assaults in the pacific recalled being in awe of the sheer size of the american fleet in front of them, and how terrifying their firepower was. The preliminary bombardment at Iwo failed, mostly due to poor intel and reconnaissance, but also due to the right intuition by the japanese, that shooting at heavily armed ships would have only resulted in making their positions known and blasted away. And effectively, the few times that japanese artilley fired on the Navy, that was exactly what happened. Japanese artillery mostly focused on Marines ashore, and understood well the need to shoot and scoot behind heavily reinforced and well covered bunkers. But mostly, they were afraid that they'd be reserved the same treatment that they gave to allied POWs. They believed, and not entirely incorrectly, that the american infantryman was filled of hatred towards them, and that if they were ever going to fall prisoner, they'd be either thoroughly abused, or straight out murdered. Between this belief and the strong Bushido code, many thought that they might as well fight to the death, since that was going to be a better fate than falling prisoner anyways. Many of those who were captured in fact recounted being surprised by the humane treatment they received.

My dad landed with the first wave (5th Marine Div., 26th Marine Regiment. Managed to survive the full 36 days of fighting and left the island in one piece. He was only 19. Would never speak about what took place.

“The gallant fighting of the men under my command has been such that even the gods would weep.” In the book, “Zen At War”, it is laid out how there was a religious fervor that led to some of the tactics of the Imperial militaries. As WWII wore on, they did change tactics and made it much harder for the Allied forces to fight, but there still was great disregard for human life because of indoctrination.

It was also due to the bushido culture instilled in the troops both culturally as well as trained in basic training. Bushido was the doctrine that any form of surrender at all was basically giving up any right to fair treatment or honor. That’s why the Japanese treated soldiers who surrendered in brutal fashion, and why it was far from uncommon for Japanese soldiers to commit perfidy and launch surprise attacks after surrendering on Allied soldiers who captured them.

Even though it was stupid of the navy to cut short the bombardment, I honestly wonder if it would have made any real difference with the way Iwo Jima was built and the bunker system.

Very well done piece about the titanic battle for Iwo Jima. Well done. Not that it mattered for the battle, but Mount Suribachi was not and still is not extinct. Although it goes through quiet periods, it probably can’t even be categorized as dormant. Suribachi erupted a number of times in the twentieth century and indeed has experienced eruptive phases in the twenty-first century. Suribachi was in a relatively quiet period during the battle for Iwo Jima in early 1945 so it didn’t affect the battle.

What i have never understood was how strategic Iwo Jima was to the Japanese. And why America devoted so much effort to eradicating the japanese. As this analysis suggests the island eas already weakened by a serious lack of re-supply and badic resources on the island. Why not just blockade it and attack elsewhere?

@@1949crHe explains it but the short version is that Iwo Jima is in the path the US bombers take to Japan and everytime they pass by Iwo, Japanese harass the bombers.

It is interesting that despite the almost complete eradication of Japanese shipping, they were still able to get fuel and maintenance materiel to Iwo Jima. Aircraft could fly there from Japan (if not shot down), but aviation fuel needs transport.

Would 10 days of shelling instead of 13 hours makes any difference? Or would it just be a waste of ammunition. Since the Japanese are so well fortified and nearly impervious underground.

Well it would probably affect morale on the island. People dont tend to fare well when theyre being shot at constantly. As well as the fear the tunnels could collapse on them

Wouldn't it have been prudent to drop a smoke shroud on Mt. Suribachi ahead of the landing? It wouldn't have helped against presighted artillery, but it could have reduced direct fire suppression.

It works both ways , you can't see the enemy movements, position of reinforcement and friendly fire would occur.

Red and white phosphorus (smoke) is not to be deployed on enemy positions after the Geneva Convention. I’ve set many hills on fire in California with this stuff, using it on human beings is not part of the training.

Yeah I think it's not only about hammering the enemy positions and causing damage and casualties, it's also about showing support for the marines who are the ones who going in and risking their lives. With the amount of casualties the marines took on the first day they can easily attribute it to the bombardment not being sustantial.

It mightve mattered from a morale standpoint. Being shot at is uncomfortable any time. Ten days straight of giant guns possibly collapsing the tunnel youre in? You wouldnt be able to sleep from the vibrations. Tired soldiers would fight worse...but i suppose after ten days of bombardment theres a pretty good chance that the guns would hit something crucial at some point

What’s the feeling about the shorter naval pre invasion bombardment? Did it really matter given the subterranean nature of the defenses? Or would additional bombardment have reduced American casualties?

I think if they could have a blockade of the island over 6 or 7 months it might of been all they would need along with a month of off and on bombing/ ship firing might of made it much easier.

I'm kinda sure that I remember that It's pretty well-known that Joe Rosenthal missed the initial shot so he restaged it and that is the famous shot of the flag on Mount Suribachi.

Wrong. It has been thoroughly researched and nothing was staged. The picture of the first flag was staged, because he arrived after the flag was up. He did not even know he got the picture of the second raising, because it was happening behind him and he took a quick snap shot. He did not develop the film himself, but it was sent off. His office contacted him and asked if the "picture of the flag was staged" They were referring to the second flag raising that he did not know about. He responded with "Yes" because he assumed they were referring to the first flag. I was at Quantico last week and viewed both flags at the USMC museum and had a long conversation with some of the volunteers there. They have a plaque that tells the whole story of the two flags, the pictures, how they miss-identified some of the men in the photos originally, and how they confirmed identities after the war. If you are ever in th DC area, I highly recommend the museum. It is free to tour, as well.

My Great grandfather was right about the pre invasion bombing. He told me he wished they would have just nuked the dam place and been done with it. He walked the island afterwards and had A hard time not crying for his lost Marines.

A great report as usual, but I'm curious about one thing: Why did you censor the words of USMC General Holland Smith? As reported by multiple sources, he referred to the opposing general as "one smart bastard", not "one smart guy". In this era of feelings over facts, I can understand why content creators might censor a racial slur, but this particular quote has nothing of that flavor. Was the word "bastard" censored to keep the content PG? 🤔
