I walked up The Dipper and can say that it's so steep you are walking up on the front of your foot . Interesting facts: The steepest gradient is 1:6. The number of corners in the track is 23 therefore if the race length is divided by the track length and multiplied by 23 you'll get 3,752 corners that the driver experiences during the race. The height difference between pit straight and Skyline is 174m (that's 570ft for those in the U.S., Liberia, and Myanmar that still use freedom units based on body parts measurements). If the +/- elevation changes experienced during the race is added together over the course of the race you get 56,769metres (that's 186,250feet for 'those' countries). If that crow that you heard near Forrest's were to fly, as they do, from Skyline to Murray's then it will cover a distance of 2Kms (1.3 miles) . If you were to mention to someone that there's a race that is run all day on a farm access track, in summer, where the inside car temperatures climb up to 65 degrees Celsius (149 Fahrenheit), where drivers core body temperatures reach 39C (102F), where the driver has to exert the equivalent of 1,200 x 120Kg (265lbs) single leg presses to exert the required brake pedal pressure, has 3,752 corners, has elevation changes of 56,769 meters (186,250feet), where there's a danger of hitting a 'roo (giant mouse) at 300km/hr (185mph), and has over 40 private houses lining the edge of the track, and there have only been 17 deaths they'll think you're a bullsh1t artist.

Walking the track on the Saturday night before the race is a highlight of the Bathurst experience. While drinking a few beers and stopping to chat to others on the walk, watching the teams work on cars in the pits, you can easily spend 2 to 3 hours doing the walk. Apart from the actual race, the track walk would be my second favourite part of going to the Great Race.

I am bursting with pride, as I hear yours, and the Brits comments about this amazing track. The Bathurst 1000, is one of the most demanding endurance races in the world. These days, it's so tight at the end of the race, that practically the whole race is a sprint from go to woe! Though, not a big car nut, I am a VERY keen Motorcyclist with a generous amount of Club and Open Competition under my belt. So, many years ago, when I was working in the area (I'm from Victoria, Bathurst is in New South Wales), and though I was warned about the Police being red hot on Hoons during the off period, I couldn't resist giving it the beans, in my little 1980 626 Mazda, which was a surprisingly quick car once you wound it up. However, coming over the top of the Mountain, through Skyline and downhill towards "the dipper", the noise of my tyres, as I executed a somewhat semi-out-of-control manoeuvre, in a desperate attempt to prevent me from hitting any or all the concrete walls; I just about shit my pants, as the scream of the tyres bounced back at me from the walls. Once I'd washed off some speed, I very sheepishly, trundled down the very long "Con-rod Straight" toward the exit at the bottom, praying that I hadn't been dobbed in to the local Constabulary. It was only after this experience, that I truly gained a healthy admiration for what these guys do. I highly recommend any Rev-heads from overseas DO NOT miss the opportunity to experience the Bathurst 1000. It's a long day, but you will NOT be bored.

A Canadian driver in the early 1970's was walking the track. Allan Moffat. Up the top while taking in the view, he asked his hosts, "thanks for the scenic tour. So when can we go see this racetrack???" They said, "Mate, you're standing on it." He was gobsmacked. This track has an international reputation.... not for the faint-hearted.

It takes me about 40 minutes to walk Mount Panorama but I’ve been walking it every morning for about 13 years. They’ve actually just added a footpath on the inside of the track but it’s honestly steeper than the track itself so I personally prefer to just walk the actual track! The weird noise you heard was a crow. And just an added fun fact there is a beautiful albino kangaroo that live at the top of mount panorama near the words

My husband raced Bathurst back in the early years. Best finish was fourth👍 Bathurst definitely achieves it's goal, to determine the best vehicle. The driver is secondary. The bat is a Flying Fox. They are large and often end up fried by power lines. They're pretty common to see hanging there dead or alive.

Don’t forget, the track hasn’t always been a sealed road. Imagine racing around the top on dirt! I drove around the track once and have a photo of the top of skyline: there were mountains ahead and horizon but you couldn’t see the track ahead. I set the cruise control to 40 km/h, the advertised speed through the chicane on Conrod. I couldn’t do it and had to slow down. I was going to try driving in the other direction but chickened out. Total respect for anyone who races the mountain.

Conrod strait used to be completely straight right down to Murray's corner where they ended the video. The chase was added to slow the cars after a fatality in the 1986 race....many of the walls you see around the circuit were added at the time as well. Mt Panorama used to have motorcycle racing every year over the Easter weekend also but that stopped probably more than 30 years ago. The higher powered superbikes of the day used to get airborne over the humps down conrod. Scary stuff.

Even on our grade 6 school camp to Bathurst (learning about the gold rush, what the town was originally famous for, not racing 🥲) our bus driver took us on a lap around the Mountain as we were leaving, 2 kids vomited going down the dipper and forests elbow, most of us were just in awe of how fast he seemed to be going in a bus, while our teachers were worrying about the fact he was going so fast in a bus 😂

Hey Ian, really enjoy your vids. I used to live in Bathurst, and here's a little something you may not know. Conrod Straight used to run, as a straight, from where it starts on Forrest's Elbow... all the way down to Murray's Corner. The Chase was added later. I had a friend who lived on Forrest's Elbow, and in my early-mid teens when I visited, I rode my pushbike all the way own, and that alone was scary, before you got to the first rise you were flying! And the cars would hit speed records flying down the straight before breaking hard for the corner.

The birds sqawking were either crows or currawongs. They look like a Magpie but they are black all over & larger. What makes Bathurst track so awesome, is they've used natural terrain as a platform to build the track, where as most tracks are bulldozed clear, and then they grade track on the cleared property. You can easily spot a track thats built into natural terrain, like Watkins Glen, Spa, Nurburgring!

Fun fact: The kink at the bottom of the Conrod Straight is the fastest corner in Australian motorsport. Cars going flat-out often about 310-320 km/h (195-200 mph) Then, the cars jump hard on the brakes to slow right down to >100 km/h for the sharp left-hander called The Chase. At full racing speed, from the kink to The Chase, takes around 2 seconds.

As an old rev-head who was born and bred in Bathurst, my father used to take me to the Mt. Panorama races as a kid in the 1950s. Then when I had my own car, (in the 60s) us boys used to race around the mountain in our old cars in our lunch break from work, before it had a speed restriction. We had so much fun up there in the old days! The track then was very basic. There was even motor cycle races up there, along with sidecars, which was very dangerous! It is very steep as well, and the video cameras don't really show it. I still follow the Supercars. I enjoy your programs ....Merrick B. (Coffs Harbour, NSW)

Walking it in the opposite direction is no fun either ! Back in 1999 (FAI 1000) I missed the last bus to the top of the circuit (Reid/Sulman Park) and started to walk up Mountain Straight. I got to the end of the pit paddock half way up the first rise and told we could not walk any further by security. I decided to walk across to Conrod Straight and take the walk from there, up through to Forest Elbow, The Dipper, The Esses and finally to (Brock) Skyline where I jumped back over the fence and off to my base camp. That took about 50 minutes from bottom to top with the slight detour across the paddock. Funnily enough Simon Emerzidis drove past in a ute and I yelled out for a lift. The reply I got was "keep walking sunshine..." It is an awesome circuit. Every time I drive through Bathurst, I make a detour to the mountain to do a full lap, maybe two... If or when you get a chance to come to Australia, I'd offer you a day trip to the Mountain. But before a lap of the Mountain, you have to stop at Carrah's Cakes & Pies in Keppel St. Best lunch stop in town ! Cheers, Gary.

I am from Victoria and have driven the track a few times at normal road pace. Originally in Falcon wagons and later in a Renault Sport Megane. At 60 kmh it is daunting. Back in the late 60's (I think), Allan Moffatt went to Bathurst and before the event was driven around and they stopped on Skyline to check out the view. As you noted, back then there were no barriers. After a few minutes Moffatt said something along the lines of "This is very nice, but where is the track" only to be informed that he was standing on it.

Hey Ian, great video, great reaction. You are right on the perspective thing of course, you know your stuff, and this video is a great way to get as close to the correct feel of the track as you can on a screen. I have had the privilege of walking across the top during a practice session, unfortunately could not be there for the race itself, but I will never forget the sensation of the first time you see the "Esses," from Skyline, and then down toward "The Dipper". It literally took my breath away - I gasped. With the mental picture of cars approaching that going as hard as they can and then the drop off it actually scares you just standing there. Gravity tugs at your legs and you feel like you could actually fall down the hill. The men that drive this circuit are legends just to get around the tack at full speed, let alone win the race after 6 hours of driving. It is a stunning circuit.

Such a smart bird. You see plenty of roadkill here, and plenty of crows eating the roadkill. You rarely ever see a dead crow though, and you basically couldn’t hit one with your car if you tried; they will just casually hop just out of range of your tyres as you fly by. The only reason one dies on our roads is because they can say ‘Kah’, but they can’t say ‘truck’…

I was very amused to see someone in a camper had managed to embed themselves into the gravel trap up to their axles at Brock's Skyline. I walked from the start finish line to Forest's Elbow where we were staying (Bathurst Goldfields) and looking up Conrod was VERY intimidating. It is a tiring walk but really opens up your eyes to just how steep the track is and increased my admiration of the drivers for going full blast around the place. I remember watching before the modern fencing was put in and seeing cars actually hanging their front wheels off the edge of the track at the left corner at The Dipper.

I remember driving an 8 tonne truck (17500lbs) with stage gear for concert at 2003 24hr...where the Nations Cup 427ci Monaro won with Peter Brock..look that one up!! The truck I was driving you could walk quicker than it up through the cutting...250hp diesel definitely got a workout going up the mountain..Don't think it got to 20mph

G'day Urock, my daughter lived in Bathurst while at Uni, as a learner driver she did a couple of laps just to have Bathurst Race Track recorded in her Learner Log Book. It's a fun drive at the regular speed limit, at race pace it would be terrifying. Your videos seem very well received here in Oz, hope you get to tick it off your bucket list. KUTGW

That fast right hander you can see at 11.56 never existed in the original Bathurst track. The old Conrod Straight just continued straight on until the final turn into Pit straight. Can you imagine barreling down Conrod at 300km/hr (186mph) fighting for the lead with another car beside you as you left your braking as late as possible before hitting a 90 degree left hander into the straight?

working at bathurst has to be one of my favourite things ever. i get to work in the sales/promo stuff there then on my breaks go walking around to film some content. best place to go is at forrests elbow. not many go there most because its a biatch walk to go back, but you get the cars coming around the corner and leaving at full tilt down conrod straight. work there for the bath 500, 1000 and the bath 12h. if you get pit/paddock passes then going inside the track to watch at the chase gets you a fair bit of action as well. definitely definitely recommend timing coming while one of the events are on and stay a little longer after its all over so you can drive/walk it as well

Thats an Aussie Crow squawking like a pommie raven. They race here even with the roos bouncing onto and across the track they have had rocks hit dickie Johnsons falcon to and then chuck in rain that only rains on half a track up on the mountain then stone dry at the bottom of the track. The Bathurst track is 6.02km long.

Those bird calls are crows ..saying " Farrkkkkk ahh fark Farrkkk " ..lol . It is a long walk and you can get four seasons in weather, start of in mid twenties celcious temp at the pits and get 2 or 3 degrees wet cold temps at the top of the mountain, plus every other variation in between .

Yrs ago the race started at 8 am Now its 10 am ish due to the car speed, its not what it used to be, but still gr8 Davi b Ausie gr8 job m8

The Australian Black Crow has a song that lasts for about 30 seconds. It starts with a fast tic, tic ,tic then the pitch and tempo slowly drop. Ark, arrk, aarrk, aaarrrk, aaaarrrrk, aaaaarrrrrk, aaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrk. Then in about a minute it repeats , it's like clock work from sunrise to mid morning.

Hey Ian 👋🏼 Living in Bathurst I attended Charles Sturt University, which from perspective; if you are at the top of the mountain looking down at the finish line, just behind that is the campus! Was such a great experience, every year getting to see the Liqui Moly Bathurst 12 hour aswell as the Bathurst 1000 from the comfort of my own dorm… FOR FREE! Best feeling ever hahaha! That bird you hear is a Black Crow, or Aussie raven. It’s the most daunting and sinister bird call. Especially at night 😬

11:26 To answer your question about how long it would take to walk around Mt. Panorama. 1. It depends on one's fitness and ability to keep up a steady pace. 2. It is exhausting on the up-hill sections 3. Condition upon one not stopping to look at the scenery it would take a minimum of 90 minutes == One can add 40 minutes onto that to allow for stopping and taking a couple of minutes rest and look at the scenery. One could expect to complete the walk in two hours as an average time. providing one is fit for purpose. Perhaps one could take a skateboard for the downhill portions.

and you can see the end of Conrod, with the chase. This was only put in the slow down the cars as they were just going too fast at the end. (and for track "straight" length reasons). You used to go straight ahead, to under the "Dunlop Wheel" bridge. The track length is 6.213km or 3.861 miles.

Watching a tour bus negotiate the dipper is something that really highlights just how steep this track is, and how tight those corners are. I walked up the hill from forest's elbow in 2015, the coach was coming down and took up almost the whole road just to get around there. Camping at the top of the mountain is a fantastic experience, a must-do, the atmosphere is awesome up there now that it's been tamed down a little bit ;)

fun fact, conrod straight used to be straight all the way through to the last turn, but because the cars we're going to fast they put the chase in to slow the cars down. and, there never used to be those concrete barriers at the top, you had some wire fence if you were lucky. motorbike races once were a thing there but with the walls up then, to many riders died slamming into them. If you want a video of one of the best passes to happen at the top of the mountain, search up "GREATEST MOTORSPORT PASS EVER - Honda Civic vs Holden Commodore" thank me later. definitely be interesting to see a reaction video on that one!!

Lived in Bathurst as a kid in the late '70s/early '80s and I once entered into a fun-run around Mt Panorama. You'd have to be crazy fit to be able to run the whole way around it, I pretty much walked to the top then ran most of it back down - took about 45 mins. It was a brutally hot day too from memory, around 33C (about 92F), but a great experience. Driving around it you can appreciate the elevation changes but walking around it you appreciate it even more.

The bird was a crow, the bat was a fruit bat commonly known as a flying fox. They are actually beautiful animals when you see them up close. I have a colony of them in the bushland at the end of my street. It's weird to see thousands of them all flying off at dusk to look for food. They are nocturnal and hang upside down in the trees to sleep during the day.

I grew up watching the 1000 from New Zealand, and finally got there in person for the 2012 race. And man, you really do realise how little justice the TV cameras do for the height of the mountain, and how steep and narrow the track is. Watching from the very top it's crazy seeing the cars charge down conrod straight and how far away and below you they really are! You should definitely try getting there once the country opens up again!

Back in 2003 I did two laps around there on a 600cc sports bike. It was a weekday and the road was open to the public, two way traffic (so things coming at you around those blind corners) and I think at the time it was a 60kph (35 mph) speed limit. Even at that speed it was as much fun as you can imagine. Definitely a highlight of that 6 week road trip (along with being medic at Phillip Island for the World Superbike Championship).

The crazy bird noise is one of the Australian Corvids . There are 6 main species of Crows and Ravens in Australia, and 5 are native. If you can tell them apart even after seeing them you're some kind of expert, because they all look very similar. That sounded exactly the same as the Torresian Crow that is the dominant species near me, but based on geography it should probably be the Australian Eastern Raven. The larger ones are a notorious pest to farmers, especially attacking newborn lambs. Sadly they have been known to snatch small puppies and "teacup" sized dogs from people's backyards too. They also catch rabbits and even young fox cubs, although they're more commonly a carrion bird. These are quite a big bird, with a body over a foot and a half long, and a wingspan of over 3 feet, and they are LOUD. Worse, they come in big flocks (or to use the correct term, a "murder of crows") and they tend to shout over each other like family at a christmas dinner. They were heavily hunted in days gone by, but now like most native animals they are protected, and are in plague numbers everywhere, because they are very intelligent and adapt well to human behaviour. Yes, like magpies they can also attack people, but usually do not do so unless provoked, but they normally fly away rather than attack.
