Why Japan’s Izumo-class Helicopter Destroyers are Aircraft Carriers in Disguise. Meet the Izumo-the Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force’s largest ship, displacing a gargantuan twenty seven thousand tons. The vessel’s lengthy, flat deck measures the length of two-and-a-half football fields at 248-meters. The Izumo typically hosts seven SH-60K helicopters designed to comb the seas for hostile submarines, plus another two search-and-rescue models-though it can carry as many as twenty-eight choppers if necessary. The Izumo also has several elevators to lower the helicopters to an internal hangar deck.
But by no means call the Izumo an aircraft carrier. She, and her sister ship the Kaga, commissioned in 2017, are “helicopter destroyers.”
This distinction is especially dubious because unlike the predecessor of the Izumo-class, the Hyūga-class, which was armed with torpedoes and medium-range anti-aircraft and anti-submarine missiles, the Izumo does not carry any longer-range weapon systems to perform regular “destroyer” roles. Its only armament is a couple short-range Phalanx and SeaRAM self-defense systems designed to shoot down incoming missiles seconds before they impact.
Yet the distinction remains because-at least until recently-the consensus in Tokyo was that “carriers” are offensive weapon systems, and offensive weapons are forbidden to Japan’s Self-Defense Forces by Article 9 of its constitution.

Something similar to what the Royal Navy had to do to get the 3 Invincible class CV's built , they called them "Through deck cruisers" so the politically sensitive name of "Aircraft Carrier" wasn't used ( still a LOT of bad feeling between the RN and RAF at the time over the cancellation of the CVA-01/02 carriers and the scrapping of HMS Ark Royal , the conversion of HMS Hermes into a Harrier Carrier and the building of the 3 Invincible class were the "replacements" for Ark Royal/CVA-01/02 )

 @Robert Lutece - maybe there's a future niche area somewhere between aircraft & missiles, where you have a drone with long loiter time and flexible targeting/mission capabilities. As for whether something is economically viable, bear in mind the rise of lower-cost 3D-printing & automated manufacturing technologies (eg. Polecat) -- and also consider certain scenarios where it's Do-or-Die. Imagine having to take out North Korea's nuclear infrastructure, or even PRC's. You may be attacking an extremely difficult target and it may have to be a one-way trip. You may need something better than a missile.
@manofsan
@manofsan 2 жыл бұрын
 @Robert Lutece - Tomahawks and other cruise missiles can't do what a combat aircraft can do, such as secure airspace or strike multiple different targets. If a mission is important enough, then perhaps it's worthwhile to use an (unmanned) aircraft expendably.

@@randomblacktemplar738 I see what you’re trying to say , but let me put it in this way: 1) An airfield is far more survivable for one reason, airfields cannot sink, so that’s 1 for airfields. 2) Ah that’s an interesting point, it’s far harder to capture an aircraft carrier. Aircraft carrier 1 But like I said the biggest factor is cost. Why spend 11 billion US dollars on a platform that can sink when you can pave a 30 million dollar airfield? Unless of course you need airfields in hostile territory, or in other words for attack rather than defense

No. It would be an obvious escalation and would trigger even more arms races and inevitably lead to war. The United States operates a dozen nuclear carriers which is more than enough to protect Japan and operate offensively in the Asia region. (Not that the US should operate anywhere really)The last thing the world needs is for Japan to be a major military power with offensive capabilities again. We need demilitarization not escalation. A modern world war would be the most destructive in history and we should avoid it at all cost even if that means Japan doesn’t get a city destroying super weapon like an aircraft carrier.

@@skipsteel I’m saying if North Korea or Russia try to attack Japan they will be glassed off the map by the US. any potential enemy of Japan is by default an enemy of America making local offensive militaries obsolete. Let giants fight giants and let the industrial and economic power of Japan be for the people of Japan not the interest of global empires and companies. I believe Japan should be capable of defending itself but not through offensive preemptive strikes that are the domain of military units like aircraft carriers. Should Japan have strategic missiles? Probably. Should the US continue to operate its pacific fleet out of Japan? Depends on who you ask but in the current political climate yes. In a perfect world North Korea wouldn’t have such a large military because it wouldn’t be under constant threat and embargo from the US and Japan and therefore neither Japan nor the US will need such powerful militaries in the region. Japan will not be a battlefield of a future war because of its proximity to US military influence. The real battlefields will be Taiwan, Philippines, and other proxy nations in the region.

Here is an idea. Typically, three ships are required for a role in order to always be able to have a certain ship out at any given time. Basically, one on deployment, one getting repaired, and another in ordinary undergoing refits, or training, etc. If Japan amends their constitution to allow carriers, of a smaller size, could the US build a modified variant of the America Class (No aft well deck in favor of more hangar space) and sell it to Japan to give them three opertational small carriers to meet the three ship rule? Would it be ideal? Probably not, as a third Izumo, or a new design created by and for the JMSDF would likely fit into doctrine the best. But, Japan doesn't seem to be anywhere near planning on a third as of right now, so selling a ship to them could be, in terms of expediency, the best option to bolster an ally's ability to project it's own power in the tense times of border disputes with China.

You don't need capital ships like BBs and BCs (though I'll admit that Kirovs are a threat to any fleet if they are ignored). As for Carriers, building more is actually debatable topic (much less a Supercarrier). Just build more capable destroyers to combat any aggressors, they are cheap and they can cause less damage to economy than building large capital ships. If they want heavier firepower, they can just build a cruiser.

Always interesting to see how the Japanese still use the names of old provinces they already used on WW2 ships like especially Kaga but also Hyuga and Ise (another Japanese carrier class with the same names as the old Ise class battleships). And I don't think I have to explain what Kaga is famous for. Meanwhile the German navy kept the U- numbering system for subs, which is pretty simple and easy, as it avoids name controversies (was begun after the last 3 destroyers were build in the late 60s called Lütjens (Admiral in command of Operation Rheinübung aka Bismarck and Prinz Eugen), Mölders (famous Luftwaffe pilot, already active during the Spanish civil war) and Rommel (I sincerely hope I don't need to explain who he was)), and naming frigates and corvettes after cities and states or for smaller ships naming them after various other things like animals, rivers, lakes, small towns or just a letter and a number

Interesting how similar these ships are to the Australian Canberra Class and the Japanese ships hold lessons for Australia, including weapons systems and adaptation for F35B. The Australian ships on the other hand are better adapted for amphibious assault and this holds lessons for Japan. The Australian ships have the advantage of already having a ski lift bow, although it might be wiser for Australia to build a new Canberra Class ship that is modified from the beginning for fixed wing aircraft. That would hold lessons for both Australia and Japan.

This is my opinion as a Japanese. We have to protect our country with our own strength. And that is what the Japan Self-Defense Force, Jieitai, exists for. There are several threatening countries around Japan. For example, China, Russia, North Korea, and South Korea (which is now a friendly country). They are expanding their armed forces day by day, and conventional JSDF weapons are no longer enough to deal with them. Up to now, the JSDF has had only the minimum amount of weapons needed to defend, but from now on, they will have to have weapons to attack as well. In Japan, there is a saying that offense is the best defense, and the JSDF is no different. In order to protect Japan from countries that are targeting Japan, we have to make them believe that we cannot attack them. In other words, if we attack Japan, we must make them believe that Japan will attack back. The helicopter-carrying destroyer Izumo has been modified to carry the F-35 as a precursor to advanced offensive weapons for this purpose. In the future, Japan and the JSDF must be able to not only defend, but also attack back when attacked. Thank you for reading this long article. This was translated using a translator, so maybe some of it is wrong, sorry. From Japan, I hope that many of my friends in friendly countries are doing well.

We Japanese are paying attention to China and Russia. Kaga and Izumo are our hope.

Of course, is a very good idea to have these planes on the service board of helicopter carriers.

I don't need an almost 9 minute long video to know that something that looks like an aircraft carrier is in fact, an aircraft carrier.

The only reason its an aircraft carrier is because of the F-35B. Without it, it was just an LHD. So no, anything that looks like an aircraft carrier isn't an aircraft carrier.

*The Japanese:* Aircraft Carrier? You mean Helicopter Destroyers? Battleship? You mean Artillery Destroyers? Submarine? You mean Submergible Destroyers? Heavy Cruisers? You mean Armored Destroyers? Light Cruisers? You mean Semi-Armored Destroyers? ... Super Battleship Yamato? Nah man, that's just an Bombardment Cruiser!
