The fly represents his self hatred about his sexuality, while the cut and the vomiting represents how his self hatred hurts him. At the beginning, the fly is bothering him as he watches Damien, and you can see a scratch on his hand. As he gets more serious with Damien, the cut gets worse and the fly bothers him more. The fly entering his cut shows how he's still internalizing his disgust with himself even as they're kissing. At the end, he's trying to delete Damien's number, denying that he has feelings for him. But it makes him throw up and there is a fly inside him because his self hatred driving him to deny himself the chance for love hurts most of all. The title 'I Wait for the Night' shows how he was nervous to show his feelings openly when he might be seen. He hides in the bushes to see Damien rather than approach him openly. They don't get intimate until its dark out and no one can see them. His overbearing mom and that he is reluctant to respond to her (Her final text is untranslated, and reads 'You have to come back now') I think shows that his family is very traditional and wouldn't approve of him being gay.

This is so thrilling and beautiful😭 My theory is that the main character(with the wound and the fly around) is afraid of loving Damian( maybe due to his strict and controlling mother). To him, being homosexual is like the wound. On the other hand, his emotions toward Damian , which represents something unclean and filthy in his mind, keep bothering him. And although he tried to admit his true emotions, he still can't accept it just like a fly is climbing into his wound. And at the end, he rejected the relationship with Damian and thus threw out all the fly. I am not so sure what happened to Damian. maybe killed?!😂

I love how everyone think it's a metaphor about homosexuality or sexual assault (which are great theories, by the way), and here I am, just believing he is a monster who eat people when the night come and his mother knows about it because she's a monster too.

it's the perfect blending of the sounds of the water, the white noise of the open air, Damien's snicker and the buzzing of the phone and the fly that helps to construct the narrative. also, the voice actors bring the characters to life, truly. something about it being in French really fascinates me. I don't know whether the atmosphere can be retained if the film is in American English - can't quite lay my fingers on it.

Je pense que, contrairement à ce que beaucoup ont dit, le premier personnage ne se bat pas avec le fait d'être homosexuel, mais plutôt avec un passé d'abus sexuels. La mouche représente le deuxième, qui fait ressurgir ce passé, et la blessure est cette blessure interne qui se réouvre alors que le premier se retrouve dans une situation d'intimité. À la fin, la mouche qui rentre sous la peau avant d'être vomie représente le fait que le premier personnage ne pourra pas avancer et se consacrer à une relation avant d'avoir pu expurger ce passé. Well I have two hypothesis about this video. The one that came in my mind first is a traumatic experience that happened in the childhood of the shy boy, maybe a rape. He became very isolated growing up, because of it, and the scar he has on his hand palm might be the only memory of it. But now he tries to get into relationships, his past re-emerges into his life when he meets the other boy. He’s totally freaked out by physical and romantic contact and this is when the fly, methaphor of the trauma. reopens the old wound. The next day, he realizes that his issue isn’t solve because it reappeared. In addition to this, the oppressive mother may be overprotecting him because of this experience and it might block him even more. My second hypothesis is that it’s not a rape but internalized homophobia. I dunno. But I reaaaally liked this vid. It was really powerful. And beautiful. It spoke to me J'ai deux hypothèses sur cette vidéo. Celle qui m'est venue à l'esprit en premier serait un traumatisme qui s'est produit dans l'enfance du garçon timide, peut-être un viol. Il est devenu très renfermé en grandissant, à cause de cela, et la cicatrice qu'il a sur la paume de sa main pourrait en être le seul souvenir. Mais maintenant qu'il essaie de nouer des relations, son passé réapparaît dans sa vie quand il rencontre l'autre garçon. Il ne sait pas du tout réagir aux contacts physique et romantique et c'est là que la mouche, méthaphore du traumatisme, rouvre la vieille blessure. Le lendemain, il se rend compte que son problème n'est pas résolu car il réapparaît. De plus, la mère, oppressante, peut le surprotéger à cause de cette expérience et cela pourrait le bloquer encore plus. Ma deuxième hypothèse est que ce n'est pas un viol, mais de l’homophobie qu’il a intériorisé. Je ne sais pas. Mais j'ai vraiment aimé cette vidéo. C'était vraiment puissant. Et magnifique. Ça m’a vraiment parlé

Beautiful animation, and a wonderfully told story told through diolauge and symbolism. My theory is that his cut represents his thoughts of his sexuality as a wound or imperfection, and the fly is the little voice ever present in his head reminding him of his "impurities". The fly could also represent the constant presence of his overbearing mother. When he coughs up the fly it represents him rejecting other peoples thoughts, as well as his own negativity, and finally letting his true emotions come through. Ma théorie est que sa coupure représente ses pensées sur sa sexualité sous la forme d'une blessure ou d'une imperfection, et la mouche est la petite voix toujours présente dans sa tête qui lui rappelle ses "impuretés". La mouche pourrait aussi représenter la présence constante de sa mère dominatrice. Quand il tousse comme un fou, cela le représente en rejetant les pensées des autres, ainsi que sa propre négativité, et en laissant enfin passer ses véritables émotions.

My thoughts about this clip: I guess the insect symbolises the danger in form of sexually transmitted diseases. It is always present and yet so tiny. The boy is probably aware of it but it's just a little doubt - always there but easy to ignore. The moment before they were kissing he was still hesitating to take the risk. In this decisive moment the fly is sitting on his face. The danger is as close to him as it can be and it becomes most obvious. It's definitely on his mind at that moment. On the other hand his Mom always makes it possible for him to escape his current situation. (Even in the middle of nowhere he could still leave with her picking him up) He could give in to his doubts and his fear and go back to his mother but he wants to be independent and make his own decisions. The temptation is bigger than his doubts and he takes the risk. From there they go on and he gets infected. Conclusion(?): Always use a rubber. What do you think?

this confused me, but I can relate. trauma makes intimacy hard, but at night its easier to fool yourself into thinking you can do it. that its fine. that this time wont hurt. I see a lot of negative comments about the mother, but just like my mother its not her being uncaring or overbearing or anything like that, its just mums know their children, and always want to protect and save them, even (mostly) from themselves.

I don’t understand the symbolism :00 What did the wound represent? Why did he delete he contact at the end? Did the other boy die or something? Why was he coughing up blood? It’s also interesting to hear how slangy the dialogue is. I’m learning french and not every last syllable is pronounced crisply and perfectly like our prof says but they still understand one another. And they definitely use words that we don’t in class. The animation still is so sweet I just wish this was a happier film jsksks

Très beau film ! Ils prennent leur temps pour installé une ambiance pour nous faire découvrir et apprécier des plans intime et poétique. Par contre, j’ai du mal à accordé du crédit au scénario et aux deux protagonistes sortis tout droit de « Moonlight » de Barry Jenkins. Si c’est un remake animé ou un hommage très bien. Mais il faut l’annoncer comme tel les gars.
