Saanen 1977 - Public Discussion 2 - Motive prevents observation
Summary:
Is it possible to be totally awake, aware?
Awareness implies no practice at all.
I must observe my conditioning, whether good, bad, indifferent, mediocre or excellent, without any motive.
Is it possible to be free of motive?
Having no motive gives freedom of observation.
If there is a motive in the exclusive love of another, is that love?
You have to look at yourself because you are the whole universe, the whole of humanity.

This channel is managed by the Krishnamurti Foundation Trust, UK, and by the Krishnamurti Foundation of America.
The role of the foundations was described by Krishnamurti when he said, 'The foundations will see to it that these teachings are kept whole, are not distorted, are not made corrupt. They will not give rise to any sectarian spirit in their activities... nor create any kind of place of worship around the teachings or the person.'
We maintain extensive archives of Krishnamurti's original works and all four Krishnamurti foundations are actively engaged in the publication of material in various forms.
Our videos contain thousands of subtitles in more than 25 languages, translated by volunteers from all over the world. If you would like to help us with translating subtitles, please contact us at digital@kfoundation.org

You can really see from this that alot of people just avoid the question by going off on a tangent about something else, or they latch onto one thing he said and blow it out of proportion by making it more complex than it is. The mind plays all kinds of tricks to keep you focused on the trivial. To keep you identified with nonsense. To keep you from looking plainly and freshly at what is. When you see the tricks the mind plays, you are beyond them. The mind just goes quiet, once you understand and see the total nonsense of the mind, you look at it without holding on or rejecting. When you do this, it's like it gets embarrassed of showing itself nakedly and becomes quiet on it's own. Make no effort whatsoever. Tilopa's six pointers for meditation says pretty much the same thing. 1. Don't recall. 2. Don't imagine. 3. Don't think presently. 4. Don't examine. 5. Don't control. 6. Simply rest. ❤

Even if you are aware without choice, you do have to choose something eventually in order to function. What then?
@decid3
@decid3 Жыл бұрын
Choice comes of itself when the "the me" is out of the way. We actually become more useful, more effective. This seems to be the spirit behind humility, Zen and "all the rest of it". Enjoy!

Do you choose to remove your hand from a burning stove? Or is a natural action? Choice is a function of ego/self. You can still act without choice. Also, if you need to make a choice, make the choice. You ca Stull understand and be aware of the choice lol
@lordwhite0
@lordwhite0 Жыл бұрын
If you are aware without choice, which means the "you" that is normally choosing is absent. Therefore, when you see two different brands of peanut butter on the shelf, the hand just moves to one without thinking about it. That's the point. There are still actions and bodily movements happening, but no person is thinking before moving. Your every action is spontaneous. You know when you walk? Do you think about every step before you take it? "Left leg move, right leg move, avoid that rock left leg, right leg stop lagging behind and catch up to the left one, now move faster... etc." Wouldn't that be incredibly draining to think like that? Walking just happens. Breathing just happens. Now go a step further... Thinking just happens. The thinker of thought is also a subtle thought. So, when you notice it, when you are aware of the minds tricks, you are automatically beyond them. You may have to watch a magic show very carefully and pay very close attention before you figure out the trick, even if the magician explains it to you, you might not see it unless you give attention to it, the subtle movements of his hands, how he holds the deck of cards, how he tries to distract your attention with banter, trying to avert your gaze, etc... but the moment you see it, the trick becomes trivial. You say, "My goodness, how simple, I can't believe I didn't see the contrivance of it.". So, it's all up to you. Don't speculate and say, "If I have an empty mind and am aware without choice, what will happen?" That implies fear of the unknown. You must try it out and see for yourself how you function without thought. I may say to you that I am living like that right now, but of what use is it to you? You must be the one to free yourself. May you be at peace and be free ❤

The catch is the same as the pink elephant. If your motive is to observe without a motive, then you have a motive and cannot observe without a motive. To observe without a motive, you must learn to observe without a motive. Either you do it like J.K. and jump full force on it, with all your knowledge, or you start by learning how to discard a motive. Imagine yourself a motive about why it should be good to observe without a motive. Wouldn't you find peace in it? No, that's not your motive, your motive is to observe without a motive. Now, since you know that inner peace is not your motive, discard it. Next time you just don't care about inner peace. If inner peace doesn't matter anymore, you have learnt to discard a motive and you are ready for the big jump. First, let the motive to observe without a motive be your only motive, then discard it. It is like the pink elephant you don't want to think about, you may have to wait effortlessly until your motive disappears.

"How do you observe the fact that you are conditioned? Do you observe it with the desire or motive that you must be free of it? If so, you have created a contradiction. So can you be free to observe without a motive? Motives are born out of your conditioning" - Public Discussion 1 in Madras (Chennai), 27 December 1977

"Je suppose que par motif vous entendez la recherche d'un résultat personnel. Parce-que vouloir éteindre le feu quand la maison brûle, c'est aussi un motif. Vouloir aider ceux qui souffrent, éprouver de la compassion, c'est aussi un motif. Or ce n'est pas la recherche d'un résultat." I guess by motive you mean the search for a personal result. Because wanting to extinguish the fire when the house is burning, this is also a motive. Wanting to help those who are suffering, to feel compassion, is also a motive. But this is not the search for a result.
