This excerpt is from a documentary chronicling the rise of one of the greatest landscape painters of all time, Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851), who rendered the subtle effects of light and atmosphere in revolutionary ways. A barber's son, he entered the Royal Academy art school at age fourteen and became, over the course of six decades, the leading British artist of his era. This overview of Turner's career and influences includes footage of locations important to him in Wales, Switzerland, and England, and readings from writers and artists of the era, including John Ruskin and Lord Byron. A 30-minute version of the film may be purchased at the National Gallery of Art. Narrated by Jeremy Irons and produced by the Gallery in conjunction with the exhibition J.M.W. Turner, the film is made possible by the HRH Foundation.

It seems he was 'the' first impressionist. But sadly for him it was too early for his time. Turner was a great artist. We should really re-discover his art and admire.

@@BigBoss-ti2xmI belive those fools murdered Van Gogh . People treat me bad sence the 90s up to 2024 even online even how I paint as a self taught undiscovered artist that’s born with microcephaly struggle academically . They ignore us and laugh at our face . There creaps of nfts targeting us and creeps from Facebook redbubke page like most of them are Hispanics come to my personal page instead of my artist page where my family and friends see laughing in my face with a immature laughing emoji and say words that’s truly wrong . Been painting on my own self taught sence I was A infant. So much biased and ignorant evil people in the wrong and this is how much us true artist is and I am expressionism artist . 8:52

Literally took me more than 1h to watch the video cuz i got so inspired i got back to my drawing of lights and colours practice, amazing what an inspired artist can infuse to other artists, even dead for more than 1.5 century ago. Thank you for this video ! Amazing work in presenting Turner's artworks!

I often ask people about their desert island painters, which 3 paintings would they want to take. Turner, Rothko and Rembrandt for me please. I love Turner, he was so important in the history of art, inspired so many 'movements' from impressionist to abstract expressionist.

MW Turner was arguably probably the best British painter from the golden age 19th century, even Claude Monet recognised his style although Eugene Bouden had major influence. Lot of people overlooked his style. Even Paul Gauguin, sorry is not an option. Courage for the white lie for someone else to say it for him.

William Turner the true father of Impressionism active fully half a century before Monet, who studied his art but failed to acknowledge Turner's strong influence on his own mature work. Constable was perhaps the finest naturalistic landscape painter in the history of art and they together showed for the first time in the Paris Salon of 1842 both winning gold medals and astonishing the French, whose paintings mostly upto that point had been artificially created in studios, with their plain air paintings.

@Jack Durham Are you quantifying the relevance of his great aunt's peccadillos to Turner's entrance into art? JMW was so gifted at art, that his talent arose out of nothing and shone like a bright light to those around him, his fate was unavoidable. Almost everyone around him knew of his talent and gift, he was even sent to The Royal Academy of Arts at a young age and was considered a genius despite his origins. His upbringing was one of the main contriubting facts as to how he painted and how avoided pomp, fame, and its trappings his entire painting career. You suggesting that this be ignored is like claiming that Mozart's career as a child be ignored as well. Lose the unintelligent condescension and realize how ignorant you sound.

If we care about Mother Nature never ending beauty of a kind, tied to the daily news friends, fine arts, natural beauty is healthy for our human body as well, we have to care about the climate change, we have to add smog eaters coats buildings and empty walls, how about building up fine arts achievements made of vegetals? Inmates in jail have to work, they have to pay expenses and learn to manage rage, anger, violent nature and frustration, the Tibet monks use to work the sand artcrafts for the same reason, for a spiritual achievement, we have to learn good things from these experiences friends, anyone can build up a mozaic puzzle composition based on a picture, decorating empty walls and giving people spiritual healing...a true happy kind of home should look like a fine arts gallery exhibition friends, think about it. Recycling domestic wasted materials now, keeping the Planet clean... Mother Earth is recycling every cattle excrement as best nourishment for new forms of life such as vegetals and flowers, all we have to do is. ..being natural, think about it fans, if you are not revolutionary then who?
