After 6 years at the club and plenty of growth and success, Jurgen Klopp is now at the point in his Liverpool journey where a new vision must be implemented to maintain standards and continue the flow of silverware.
This season has seen Liverpool break a number of ignominious records - including but not limited to 6 home defeats in a row - and reach lows that have not been seen since before Klopp took charge of the club. Many factors have been attributed to Liverpool's difficult season so far such as injuries, fatigue, and lack of fans but beneath these reasons the club, the players, the fans and even the manager have experienced a monumental shift in mentality.
When Klopp arrived, he made it clear that he sought to turn Liverpool into a club that could compete and in due time, the trophies would follow. A great transformation then ensued under the leadership of Klopp as the team improved year after year. Now 6 years later, these goals have been accomplished and a sense of complacency has set in in the absence of a new ambitious, enterprising vision. Now, Klopp finds himself in need of rebuilding his players' mindsets and potentially bringing in the sort of players that will fit into that vision and push the team to greater heights.
Whether he emulates his peer in Diego Simeone or follows the great Sir Alex Ferguson in his rebuilding project, Jurgen Klopp finds himself at a crucial juncture in his Liverpool career.

nice analysis and background info. Really painful these days as an LFC fan but nothing compared to the days before Klopp. There's a first for everything and this is our first real low-time since Klopp's arrival

Thanks! I think the squad is just a little burn out and needs to write this season off and start afresh.

Agreed! If any Liverpool supporter thinks this is a horrible time, they musn't have been around in 2010-11! We were literally in the RELEGATION zone! Even the season before Klopp came in was rough, we lost Suarez, Sterling and Stevie G within a year and Rodgers had too many new players without a set system to get the best out of em

I think a lot of it stems from lethargy in the transfer window. After winning the UCL and coming so close in 2018/19 we decided to run it back with the same group of players + Adrian and Sepp Van Den Berg (+Minamino in Jan) for what I'm assuming were continuity reasons, there were plenty of holes such as back up LB, back up RB, CAM, an alternative option to Salah, Mane, Firmino that were passed over in the name of squad cohesion. I feel like it just took an extra year for this to catch up, if you stand still while everyone else progresses you may as well be moving bcakwards. When you're competing over a 38 game league season with Man City, who have a squad that is 20+ players deep, you need to be able to trust and use as many players as possible to share the load. For the past 3 seasons, the Liverpool first team has picked itself unless there are injuries. Alison, Robbo, VVD, Gomez, TAA, Fab, Hendo, Wijnaldum, Mane, Firmino, Salah. Outside of midfield, there is very little competition for places and a huge drop-off from starters to the bench across the board. City's bench when they beat Liverpool had Jesus, Laporte, Fernandinho, Mendy and Torres. This was with Aguero, KDB and Walker all out injured too. When you're playing your best team every single week while the opponents have the luxury of changing 6 players a week you can compete for a season or 2, but it's inevitable they will pull away once you start to tire and get injured. Jota and Thiago were the perfect signings at the time to try and other something different and provide competition but we haven't been able to see the benefits yet due to the injury crisis. I think Liverpool need to buy another CB, Matip simply can not be relied on for longer than a few consecutive games with his injury record, backup RB, I like Neco Williams long term but I think he needs a loan move, back up GK, Adrian blows, CAM/Creative mid, Ox and Keita can't be relied on for long stretches// a Coutinho type player to break down teams when they sit deep and finally a new attacker. The last one is key, Origi has shown while he will forever be a cult hero he is not good enough to start, Jota was a nice addition and something similar to him again would be a huge boost. Unfortunately, Firmino's shooting and finishing have regressed to the point where his unselfish playmaking and defensive pressing+effort aren't enough to counter-act this. He's still good enough to start, but we need another attacker along with Jota so that we can mix it up, rest players, inspire competition and try different formations/tactics. Perhaps Firmino could play deeper as a CAM occasionally? Worth a try.

Completely completely agree! Very well put. The chickens have simply come home to roost this season and because it has happened all at once and all of a sudden it is going to be very difficult to offload a lot of the deadwood in the squad and bring in better replacements especially if the club doesn't qualify for the Champions League. Additionally Liverpool are going to really feel the financial implications of COVID this summer so we might see some key players sold along with the deadwood to fund any new transfers which just gives Klopp a lot of work to get this team competing at the highest level again.

@@NuSquared It's not about spending the megabucks, this squad needs light work, not major surgery tear it all down and start anew. The backups I listed should be able to find fairly cheap, there must be someone better than Adrian who wants to sit on the bench 90% of the time but get a chance to play for a contender in the cups and possible get medals. The backup right back I view as an investment because it could allow Neco Williams to go out on loan and grow, I really like him (and not just because he's from my hometown!) and he plays fairly similar to Trent, just doesn't have the confidence to spam crosses yet, if one or two go wrong it gets in his head and he starts looking for passes inside. The CB and CAM suggestions are simply acknowledgements that the current backups we have are injured more often than the starters that play every week ahead of them! Matip isn't going to play 10 consecutive games so whats the point in having him as the emergency if there is a long term injury? He's great for rotating the squad but Matip (and Ox and Keita) don't look like dependable long term solutions. The CAM is a plead to diversify the squad, teams have started to wise up that if you play defensively, have your wingers shadow our fullbacks on overlaps, and have big CBs that can deal with crosses Liverpool aren't going to break you down the way Man City do. It's not as simple and I'm not as hyperbolic to say something daft like 'theres no plan b' but plans A-D are all heavily reliant on crossing and getting the fullbacks forward on the overlap. That worked great when VVD and Gomez could sit on halfway and were so fast and good in the air there wasn't much risk of getting countered (Fabinho and Henderson would cover excellently too) but now he's gone and teams have wised up we need to further diversify, this past month has been painful watching how few chances we create. The most important one is a new forward. Doesn't need to be (and won't be) Mbappe 2021 but something that's a vast upgrade on Origi. I'd love to see us experiment with a proper striker (even if its Salah with Jota on the RW) and Firmino as a CAM, would allow his creativity and defensive work rate to shine without the downsides of him scuffing a shot straight at the keeper twice a game. Jota was brought in for £5M up front which will be £40M total so it can be done, Lord Michael Edwards will no doubt sell Origi to Brighton for £50M to fund it all.

Hahaha long live Michael Edwards! But I do agree that Liverpool don't need to break any transfer records to improve the team. The big issue I see with the club is that once the summer comes, the squad planning is most probably going to focus solely on improving depth at centre back under the presumption that this season was simply down to injuries at the back and no deficiencies elsewhere. I'd love to be proven wrong nonetheless.

@@NuSquared only way they go big is if Salah or Mane leaves in which case it will be reinvesting that money. CB is a must, Fabinho can cover the odd game but moving him from CDM permanently just weakens the midfield which weakens the attack, maybe Kabak becomes permanent maybe it’s someone else (I like Botman but I’ve onl seen 1 live game so going off highlights which is never good). Wijnaldum is probably off and wouldn’t shock me if Thiago wanted out after the way this year has gone, 2 young midfielders are a must, I still rate Buendia from Norwich as one cheap option, after that who knows, Bissouma from Brighton? We then need that attacker, Neto looks like a player that would flourish at Liverpool but it’s a lot to put on him and I doubt Wolves will sell to us again without charging a premium, for the stated purposes I gave I think it needs to be someone more experienced Way I look at it is it will cost us more money in missing out on UCL for multiple years if Klopp leaves, we have to invest in a squad if we want to take down City. We were able to beat them once and build a better first XI without spending close to what they spent and we can do it again, just give Michael Edwards a spreadsheet and let him get to work.

I know this is an unpopular opinion, but I really feel this is the summer we sell either Mane or Salah. 1st off, attack trios never last long in football. MSN were together for 3 seasons. Rooney-Ronaldo-Tevez two. Sure the BBC had 5, but by the last two Bale was hardly fit often enough to be a regular starter. We've had our front 3 for 4 great years now, and they're all reaching 30 together. Next year will also be when AFCON is held. If you look at Klopp's reign overall, January has always been the month where we struggle the most. (The two home draws and away loss to City in 18/19 causing us to lose the title for example) Both Salah and Mane will be gone, so we will NEED a new signing to carry the attacking load for that month. Both Mane and Salah still have 2 years left on their contracts and are still in their prime. With the FSG model, that is practically the PERFECT time to sell. The roster does need a overhaul, the money we get from a big sale could determine how fast we do it.

This is definitely an interesting view but who do you think Liverpool can get to replace either of those players in the event they don't qualify for the Champions League?
@stevendchu
@stevendchu 3 жыл бұрын
@@NuSquared Well ideally I'd say Mbappe! But i think even with UCL that would still be a fantasy, our salary structure simply cannot accomodate a player on 700k a week. So if we're looking at a "big name" the answer would have to be Sancho. He's young, fills the homegrown quota, clearly wants to come back to England and it looks to be between either Liverpool or United. But accounting for the financial difficulties caused by the pandemic, I fully expect our great scouting team to pull off another miracle in getting some lesser known player that turns into a world beater. Rafinha, Cantwell, Buendia, David maybe ?
