Seriously, this must be in the "Top 1" or "Top 2 or 3" (not many more) of guitar renditions of the BWV998. The nuanced phrasing, dynamics, coloratura and control are simply mind-boggling. And the overall organic narrative Mr. Devine has woven is....yes, another superlative (what else?!)....astonishing. Added to this the wonderful resonance of his ten-string guitar and you have an transcendental performance. This idea that Bach (on the guitar) must be played with the utmost clarity and with the most solid tone is standard practice and just to get the notes is a feat in itself. But to express it at this musical level, is a miracle. My only criticism, and not towards Mr. Devine, but rather an observation about certain limitations per se of of the guitar : anyone who has heard Russian pianist's S. Richter performance will notice the wonderful choral melody interplay in the Fugue, almost like those underlying notes creating a soaring choral melody beyond the harmony: the effect is really enchanting and it is simply impossible on the guitar although Paul Galbraight has attempted to recreate it...but not anyone near what Richter does. The Richter recording has "spoiled" my ears as I know the BWV998 mostly from guitar performances (but I encourage all to listen to Richter). Thus, ask not an oak tree to give you pears and accept what the guitar can do. In this sense, Mr. Devine's is truly among the top handful guitar performances (Paul Galbraight, Dane Redzic...a few others...) of this piece...in history. We can only hope you record the complete suites on your sonorous ten-string as the great Narciso Yepes and Stephan Schmidt have done in times past.

I loved watching you preform in the Darwin international guitar festival more than 10 years ago. All the other guitarists commented to me in private about how hard you practised during the festival and how great it sounded in the dorms. It was a very memorable concert because you drew the audience in to the performance with your subtlety and lyrical sound. If you are ever wanting to preform in Darwin / Australia in future send me a message. I'll work to make it happen.

Loved it. One of my all time favourite sets of pieces and very nicely played. I like your attention to the bass lines - damping appropriately etc. (Which I struggle to do myself.)Also your control of the fugal counterpoint. Your tempo for the Allegro pleased me. Some people play it too fast for my taste and I can't appreciate the implicit counterpoint. (Sometimes you speed up slightly when you get excited though.) I note you play it in E flat. I get around this by tuning my six-string E flat, B flat, E flat, A flat, C and F, but at commonly accepted Baroque pitch to match the harpsichord recording by Colin Tilney ;-). he- he. Anyhow, thanks for posting it.

Hi Graham, I remember I attended one of your master classes in Ware. I played the 998 prelude and, at the end, you asked me to play the section (2:12-2:18 on your recording) again. Then you made me repeat it another few times. I was thinking "What am I doing wrong?" but you turned to everyone and said "I love that part!". You're a great teacher!

Thank you very much Sergio, great to hear from you! I really like to hear the Bach lute works on six-string too, it's just with ten strings there is the possibility to play all of the voicing in the correct notated octave. Although, I must say I find it way more difficult to play these on the ten-string than playing these works on six strings, and they are really difficult enough with six strings!!:)

Very nice Graham, well played. I love those deep bass notes. Having played this on 6 strings, how much more work did it take to learn to play it on 10? Stupid question, I know, but roughly speaking.

Hello Tim, I have found playing the works I have posted so far way more difficult on the ten than the six string guitar. This current project has taken a lot of time and effort, some years in fact, and has only been accelerated by lockdowns, haha. Despite the difficulty I personally find with the ten string, I can play the bass voicing as written and this is particularly satisfying , especially for fugues for example.

Thanks Graham. I’m very tempted to get a ten string, but I expect there is very little published material. Have you found much in your research, or is it a question of going back to the original manuscript and arranging it yourself? Will you be publishing any of your own ten string arrangements in due course?

I'm going to guess the tuning is 10-6 = C# B G A D. I could be totally wrong! Whatever it is, it was really well-played. Addendum: Giving it another listen (Prelude) with headphones this time. I appreciate how you stop the basses, allowing them to ring only as long as written. Not an easy task. You also play them delicately, not overpowering the upper voices. Lots of subtle things that you do to make it special.
