J105 heavy air racing at Fort Worth Boat Club started out as a nice day with winds around 10 knots alternating in the race We had storms rolling in which caused a gust up to 30 knots. We hit a max of 12.8 knots and got 3rd out of 4 boats.

Nothing better than "heavy" air and a very light chop. Full speed ahead!

This is the only J105 I've seen trimming jib to the cabin top winches. the lead is better to the cockpit primaries, you can still tack with one person (two is better), but I think it gives you better leverage. plus, if you're undersized for crew you can cross sheet to the high side.

I’ve never seen the jibsheets on a J/105 led to the cabin top winches.

Thanks for posting. That was quite fun. Quiet boat. Suspect you would have gone better up wind with much less forestay sag (and bounce) and your jib twisted more.

Agreed more backstay would have definitely helped in the blows. Thank you for viewing

@@SailDallasRacing also, as the wind built, more jib halyard tension. It had nice speed wrinkles for light air.

Great Video. Thanks. Trailing spinnaker sheet on the beats probably didn't help.

Never raced a 105 before but it seems the outhaul could have been eased for the downwind legs.

That's awesome, it feels like I'm right there with you. Thanks for sharing the videos, and I look forward to future content, especially since our season up here on Lake Ontario won't get going for a few more months!

Strange to see the genoa trimmer call all the shots without too much communication with the helmsman? At minute 49, the genua trimmer seems to decide to gibe completely on its own and then of course he has to take care of the mess he created. He don't seems to be the most pleasant guy ;-). Manoeuvres should be planned far much better with much clearer communication and no shouting to each other! I'm not so sure if the crew had a pleasant ride...

You are losing a ton of time because of your main trimmer. The amount of time that traveler was cleated and not reacting to changes in windspeed and wind direction.... he deserves a talking to. It's your foredeck / rail meat's job to watch shifts and call wind. Not your mainsail guy who should be watching that mainsail and feeling the boat heel constantly as a feedback to trim it.

Completely agree thank you for your thoughts. Like you said it’s a team effort.

I suggest you get the boat's wind speed indicator calibrated, waves with no white cap and gust to 30, regardless off the reach no possible. On Lake Erie it would have been building to 6 to 8 ft waves .

Just what we saw on the radar we are on a small lake so I’ve never seen waves more than like 3 feet high. We had a squall line come through so it was more of one gust to 30 Thank you for the recommendation we will definitely look at it!
