As you mentioned - most Indian speaks 3-4 languages in their daily life. For instance, I speak hindi with "non-gujarati" friends, gujarati at home and english at work or with clients (or other professional place). Just a few days back, I was having lunch with friends and while paying I received a call from client, I was speaking with him over the phone in english. With the restro guy I was talking in gujarati and my friend made comment and I responded to him in hindi. This is very common in India and nothing fancy about it.
