I noticed a lot of the same comment about some major things we missed. Please keep in mind a few things. 1) it’s a foreign language for us, so we are depending on good subtitles 2) some verbal nuances don’t get translated in the subtitles 3) the subtitles moved really fast 4) Only VERY wealthy people in the US have maids (servants). It’s not the first thing we assume if it’s not overtly stated. After watching it a second time, things made more sense. But the risk of watching anything from another language or country is always the possibility of things being lost in translation or cultural nuances not being understood. Here that happened a lot more than usual. Sorry guys.

The woman in the film repeatedly attempts to scare the homewrecker away. - Tells her that her husband has constipation -He takes 15 pills -The chutney is made out of the decomposed body of their servant. -Tells her that the husband's family frequently hires prostitutes The most IMPORTANT scene is where she's in the kitchen heating food. She decides to heat it herself, instead of asking the servant to do it. This leads the servant to discover his wife and his employer's younger brother together in his room. All this happened because of the woman.

chutney explained (or at least what i got) 1)In the opening shot we see that the ladies gossip about the vanita didi/virji's wife (protagonist) that she always cooks up stories. 2)In the following shot we see that virji flirts with the mistress(Antagonist) and gets noticed by vanita who later invites her to her home. 3)At home both are seen having a very casual conversation and we see that vanita starts to tell her a story about their ex-servent bhola. 4)When she starts to describe bhola's appearance we need to notice that bhola had a striking resemblance to the antagonist from the skin color and big eyes. Also their relation with virji drew a parallel. (The dogs description was also same and also drew a parallel in terms of relation with virji.) 5)The complete following story was cooked up where the viewers are shown that how she could frame a scene according to her by purposefully not giving the lunch and heating it by herself so that bhola will come at odd hours to witness her wife's cheating. 6)Proof that the story was cooked up because virji's brother / vicky never stayed at home ,yet during the day of incident he came out of bhola's room which is unnatural. we can also see that after his death her wife's character is just missing. 7)All the characters that died(kind off) like bhola,dog and his wife all represent the antagonist as how virji loved people for his selfish reasons and how he himself let to their end . 8) She is seen defaming her husband as he is weak,unfit and depends on medicines but drew a contrast by portraying how young and fit his own younger brother was. 9)ultimate aim was to scare and warn the antagonist by cooking up a story. jaby if you notice this comment and if it helps you understand the story a little bit more please hit the like button.

You almost got it but *sigh* language barriers. That guy was their servant! And yes the girl was flirting with that lady’s husband so basically she was trying to warn her to stay away from her man.

When she said "dig deeper else the stink is unbearable", it implies that this type of incident has already happened to them and they have buried a body or bodies before!

Tisca Chopra used to be the headgirl of my school in her time. She was always a very talented person.

In the start when the group of gossipping women are talking, they say that she is from Ghaziabad, they mean to say that she is an innocent, small town person who doesn't understand stuff. That is why she kept mentioning it again and again in the story she told the woman in the pink dress. Yeah she is from Ghaziabad but she is not gullible. The boy who was murdered was their servant. He was attached to her husband, so was the dog and they both died. Now the woman with the earrings is trying to get closer to the husband, so his wife cooked up this story to warn her and also let her know that you would have the same sticky end if you don't stop trying to get close to my husband.

she was just telling lie indirectly she is trying to warn her about to stay away from her husband. from her false story she is trying to tell that anybody even the dog who likes his husband faces death and how i got it that she is telling lie because at beginning one lady said that she is a liar she is expert in making story

1.mutton- bhola murdered his wife, thats y there is no scene of wife while bhola is being digged( the only reason why bhola was killed by younger brother) too many hindi dialogue clues to admit this fact. Only reason female lead calls bhola useless after digging him is killing the wife but not brother yet serving them as fool. & in conversation u may find bhola is a servant not son. two things- this story telling can be true as the background of characters are portraited, similarly. fake just to scare the cheater guest. director & writer wants your self discoveries & depth. love u bro(jaby)

The young boy is not her son, it's their servant. What makes you think he's their son ? It's clearly said servant.

The story was a lie! In the beginning, a lady says that this lady lies a lot! Also at the party a friend of the man says its a small town so everybody knows what’s happening in eachothe’ s lives meaning we all know you’re having an affair with the pretty lady. So obviously the wife must’ve also heard the rumour so, she invited her to her house to scare her away! When the wife says that the dog was so attached to her husband and he died and so was the servant and he also died. She’s saying to that lady, anyone who gets close to my husband dies!

no the guy who got killed was the help ..her husband had got. when that guy slept with his wife they both fought and he got killed and that's why they hid his body in their yard.

1st of all, Thank you very much for reacting to Chutney. This short film is my first request to Jaby. To understand it fully, you have to watch and listen it from very start. As the lady says: 'She is from Ghaziabad where people are infamous for making stories' gives a hint that all she told about her servant's murder is fake just to scare the lady to stay away from her husband as well as the present servant to behave nicely. I got the whole idea from the comment section from the original video. Thanks once again for reacting to this one.

She was cooking up the story just to shoo away her from her husband. As one lady said in the start she is too good in cooking up the stories. She invited her to her home so that she can cook up some story to make her away from her husband.The moment the guest lady said that she likes the chutney very much she starts cooking up the story.

Jaby, love your work. And "Chutney" was the green gravy that she served with the fritters to the girl, and "Chutney" is an indian form of sauce and it takes more than 3-4 ingredients/ herbs to make it in a mixer. so this film signifies many small back stories about every character: 1) First, to make her husband look bad ( health issues, pills, generous but angry person, kind of not an ideal man that a girl shud be looking) 2) just hinting throughout the story that this family has many skeletons in their closet, to scare the girl (mild hints: earrings) 3) boy was the servant from village, and the boy killed his wife in the night after thinking about the visual all day, about his wife and his master's younger brother (Vicky) in the afternoon when he came early. After his wife he went to kill Vicky but he killed the boy instead in self defence. than they buried him in the ground. 4) so, wife coming back to the chutney (gravy) at the end told that is why i have a garden in my home and that is where the ingredients for this chutney has been grown.

Bottom line of movie - Either Dog , servant or anyone comes close to his husband gets killed. Indirectly stay away , be aware. all tht happens of accident behind the screen is scripted by her, though she looks innocent wife outside , she s wild inside thts why she repeatedly says 'Am from Gaziabad how would I know.'

The protagonist here from ghaziabad which generally considered as not so friendly neighborhood or anyone from that area is generally labelled as not so educated or broad minded. She is good at making stories which is discussed amongst all the ladies at the party. She finds out about her husband's infidelity so she invites the other girl home to teach her recipy. She began to tell a story about their servant who was her husband's favourite. She didn't like him much as the husband was more attached to him than her. At the same time she has a feeling for her brother in law vikky. Who turns out to be involved with the newly wed of the servant. One day the protagonist deliberately missed to give her husband his lunchbox because she knew that Vikky will come when her husband and the servant is away. You can see that in a beautiful scene where she was waiting at the kitchen for servant to come back for the lunch box. The servant finds out about his wife but didn't do anything at that point. The same night the servant was killed by Vikky. The way she was advising her husband to dig the grave dipper and burning all clothes suggests that she has seen and been in such situation even earlier and she is not someone to mess with. This is one of my favorite short movies!!

The guy who was killed was not their son but their servant. The brother in law of the main character (Tisca Chopra) had an affair with the wife of the servant. He found out and wanted to inform about the same to Virji. But he was afraid. The brother in law killed the servant coz he found out.

You've almost got the gist of this movie. Through her story, she tried to warn her that even though her husband liked their servant (the young guy was not their son) and had grown very fond of him, after his servant's murder they just buried him in their own house and started "organic farming" and the same could happen to the younger girl. The same they must have done to the dog i.e. bury him there only (they bury everything). or maybe they got the idea of burying their servant after the experience of their dead dog. as to why the woman did not react much on the murder- she was from Gaziabad, a 'not so developed' place and it is portrayed as a place where people are very tough and fighting and killings keep happening there. Since they referenced the name of Gaziabad so many times, i think, that's what the story was trying to establish.

I'm the writer-director and its so cool that you guy a lot of it .. so the guy who got killed is the servant, who lives in with this family, and his wife was basically sleeping with the younger brother of the Master... And he kinda goes stunned when he finds out so wants to go kill him, but there is a scuffle and he dies instead. And, in case you missed it, the badass woman is described as being a storyteller right at the start at that social function, so you dont know if she's lied or is telling the truth to Pinky here..! :-)

This is one of my favourite short film. Only the conversation is important here. The wife mostly lies to the woman. She really loves her husband and simultaneously didn't want to hurt the other lady too. So she made a story full of mysteries and weird things that the lady would leave her husband very easily.

This story about a woman who will go any leaps and bounds to protect her family. She was warning the woman who was flirting with her husband.

That young dude was that family's House helper ! 🙂

Chutney is made by grinding fresh cilantro leaves with other spices so when you see that lady is eating those snacks dipping that in that chutney so the cilantro is picked from the herb garden where they buried the dead servant.

The woman is the actress who plays the mom in Taare Zameen Par. That was not her son but the servant. She keeps repeating about being from Ghaziabad. That is a place where the law and order can be a bit suspect. That is probably why she was so cold when the servant was murdered and knew that you need to bury a body deep in the ground. The servant was killed by the rich guy's younger brother who was having an affair with the servant's wife. They wanted to cover up the crime so disposed of the body by burying it. Yes, she is shown as a character with cold emotions giving a warning to the other woman flirting with her husband of what she is capable of.

In the very first party scene when the ladies where talking about the lady from gaziabad and also tells that she is a storymaker. Then the lady notices her husband flirting with another lady, so therefore she calls her to her house . And when she starts her story she talks about the dog as well as the help which is brought by her husband. Then the wife tells that her husband is majestic everyone gets attract to him( indirectly she is saying that even you are attracted to him) then she tells that both the dog as well as the help died ( pointing out the fact that she will die too) So basically all this was not true it was just a story made up by the wife

Have you read the story "the open window"....its like that only...actually the woman was trying to scare that young lady as the later was trying to flirt with the husband....

Yeah the giggling girl was the young guy's wife, she was in a relationship with the brother of the husband of the main character. And the young guy was the servent not the son who went to kill the brother but instead got himself killed and in order to save her brother in-law she came up with the plan to bury him and get rid of the other girl by scaring her.

In the very first scene Tisca is referred to as Story Teller.. I hope that messes all the analysis.

It is clearly mentioned that the guy got killed (bhola) is their servant. As Bhola Saw the his wife's amorous relation with his master's younger brother he must have died in the fight with vicky in the night. She told all the story to warn the other woman to stay away from her husband. The home made chutney's wonderful flavour came from the plants grown from the dead bodies ( the dog, the the servant : as they do not throw any waste material in their village)

This used to be my reaction when I used to watch an sci-fi Hollywood movie in school days!! You cnt understand always just by seeing what's happening on the screen!! The lady made up the fake story to scare the other girl!! Thats it!!

Starting off with characters: The woman(w1) at time 1.34 and 3.40 is the protagonist. She is from a small town called Gaziabad(which she keeps mentioning). The younger woman(w2) at 1.33 and 3.25 : Is visting w1's home. She is flirting(or having an affair) with w1's husband.(the flirty guy at the bar) Bhola: The (dead)servant who used to work at w1's place. Vicky : W1's brother in law.(husband's brother) Prerequisite: CHUTNEY means a green sauce made with Chili, coriander etc. Plot: w2 is flirting with w1's husband. w1 invites w2 at her home and offers her snacks along with chutney,which is made of home grown chillis. W1 starts to tell w2 about their former servant bhola,who used to be a great cook. Bhola used to be very close to w1's husband. Bhola gets married and brings his wife to live with him. One day while w1 and bhola's wife are the only ones at home,w1 notices her brother in law entering bhola's room. When she snicks in, she notices intimacy bet'n bhola's wife and Vicky. But she decides to keep quite about it. Until one day, when bhola suddenly comes home and sees his wife with vicky. That very night bhola decides to kill vicky. But in the end vicky ends up killing bhola. When w1 and her husband see this, the otherwise macho husbands gets scared,while the badass w1 decides to bury the body in the house itself. she plants chilli plants on it. The same chillis she uses to make chutney served to W2. Its like an indication or a warning from w1 to w2 that 'I might be a small town girl, but if I can bury a body in my house, then you better think twice before hitting on my husband'. Since Chutney is one of my favourite shorts and you had little confusion about it, I wrote this breakdown. Hope you see it.

Few little nuances that will help understand the film: 1. In the very beginning, one lady says " She knows her and her family...she is a liar" (at around 1:30 mins in the video). Saying her liar is a good translation but the very correct Hindi to English translation is "She makes false stories". This gives us a hint that whatever happens later in the film is most likely the "story" created by her. 2. The lady wife tried to show herself a very simple and straightforward Indian housewife making the other modern era lady to believe in her story (general conception of modern era Indian girls is that the simple and straightforward Indian housewives generally speak truth). The cinematography is really awesome here :) 3. In the story the lady wife told the other lady that people in her husband's family are of loose characters (including her husband) implying indirectly to better keep away from her husband as he may do the same thing (flirting other women) in case she has some future plans with him (like marrying with him). Also, she may need to face brother in law's lustful character (as he is also like that) 4. While telling the story she also made a reference to the Dog and said he got killed under the family's own vehicle. Now the reason behind telling this family's own vehicle is to make the other lady not believing it as true (as it is indeed rare) but to get a thought of the dog being killed somehow (like somebody threw the dog under the vehicle). 5. In a nutshell, the point the story teller lady is trying to make is that whoever is fond of her husband (male server, dog), whoever it is, gets killed somehow...so better be away from my husband :) 5. Last but not the least (this is my opinion)- The new server who gives the other lady drink and food (btw the Pakoda's and Chutney are mouth watery) knew that the lady is bullshitting (see 9:00 - 9:07 min in the video)...so this is not happening for the first time...the lady played this trick on others successfully..may be her husband is fond of flirting with the other women so lady knew how to handle it now. I also doubt that lady wife might have told servant to spit in the drink (as a punishment to lady flirting with her husband). Even thought he spits in both the glasses, the lady wife didn't drink it actually...she just touches her lips to the glass and keep it off but the video shows the other lady atleast finished half the glass :) All in all, this little nuances shows the brilliance of direction, story writing and cinematography.
