Dempsey worked the body a lot in this fight. Great champion, the toast of the 20's

Thanks for the upload. Great fight.

Dempsey was a murderous body puncher, nobody goes to the body like that today. He also had incredibly fast hands, short compact shots you could barely see but that were devastating,

where was the willard film crew for this fight???... its amazing how much sharper the film footage is for the willard fight then this. i thought edison's factories were in nj, you'd think they wouldve got better equipt., i mean this wasnt 1903. even jack johnson film is sharper then this.... carp had very good feet and defense but dempsey's power and own foot speed were at prime level here. too bad this dempsey couldnt have fought tunney. tunney was tougher then carp, but not by much. i think this dempsey dispatches prime tunney.

Was this footage taken at 18fps? I'm glad it's not played fast, like old slapstick films

Georges kept snapping Dempsey's jaw, especially in the first 2. He just kept clinching with a dude 2 inches taller and a stone heavier than him, he also had a much weaker chin than Dempsey and less stamina it seems

Many champions in those far distant days, especially Heavyweights did not defend their title very often. Gaps between defences could last a couple of years or more. Some of Jack Johnson's "defences" were actually more like exhibitions with the intention that his title would not be on the line (Every time a Heavyweight Champ fights his title is regarded as being at stake unless it's labelled an Exhibition). He wasn't alone in that practice. Jack Dempsey seems small by today's standards but then so was the average height of the population and weight, not forgetting that fighters, like the public, also aged much differently than today.

"...if you prefer the French pronunciation..." The French pronunciation of Carpentier's name (car-pawn-tea-ay) is the correct pronunciation!

Loved the way Dempsey used to pick up the guys he K.O'd. Two of those you could not pick up, they were killed in the ring fighting Dempsey. The word KILLER INSTINCT was used in the game because of Jack. The way he fought he mauled guys ,and never let them breathe. The body work was a Dempsey specialty. Tyson always mentioned Dempsey because of his relentless fighting style. Before Dempsey many of the fighters used to throw a few punches in a round, probably because they were going 20,30,40,70 rounds +. Dempsey brought excitement to the game not to mention big paydays for fighters. One of the all time greats, he still has the most 1st round K.O's of any hwt champ to this day.

you're confusing dempsey w/ baer. dempsey never killed anyone in the ring, though he did certainly permently restructure some faces.

Actually I'm not ,yes Baer killed 2 guys, But Dempsey did the same, look it up.

Does anybody know if Dempsey was the originator of "the Dempsey roll" aka "Philly Shell"? If my Eyes doesn't decieve me he uses it at 10.07 - a Beautiful example of that technique
@Kevintu287 жыл бұрын
The shoulder rolls been around since bare knuckle fighting the mayweathers and Whitaker just made it popular again you can see a of old school fighters using like joe gans Sam Langford even Jim Jeffries and Corbett looked like they were using it

dempsey modified it in re to how it could be used from the outside vs bigger fighters. he used a drop step & gaining centrifugal force thru the thighs and torso to create maximum leverage in the finishing left hook of the sequence. classic example was the willard fight. no one could time it & get more power leverage behind the technique better then dempsey. he was underrated in his athletic gift of balance and timing. ditto louis.

Carpentier was a very good light heavyweight. I believe this fight was scheduled for 12 rounds, not 15. Not that it mattered, considering the outcome.

this was set up as a huge $ maker for rickard. it played on amer now on the world stage as the most powerful global nation in the world. nationalism was really big in the usa in the roaring 20's and this fight maximized its profit potential. not to mention the roaring 20's was ushering in mega gated events and wired natl media services for the first time. you are witnessing here, the start of the mega media event wh/ is so common place now. the fame of dempsey & the understanding maximization talents of rickard created the template for the modern gated mega event.

Carpentier looks more like a middleweight than a heavyweight. Yes, he hits Dempsey, but his punches have no effect on Dempsey.

I have nothing against Dempsey, I just wonder why he is ranked so high among the all time greats when he had very few title defenses?
@regkray98727 жыл бұрын
Alvalanker Highwind because of the intensity he fought with? his skill level, the fact he has more ist round kos than anyone else in history, the fact he was one of the greatest left hooks ever, the fact that he is arguably the greatest inside fighter ever and this win up here . carpenter yes the smaller man but if anybody knows the history is pound for pound one of the greatest fighters that ever lived his up there with the best of the best.
