The look on Sharkey's face, immediately after Dempsey connected with the final left, is priceless.

this is great to watch. excellent clarity for the '20's. may be the clearest testament to what dempsey looked like even though he is past his prime. dempsey though still had a lot left here, esp guile, chin & stone hard toughness. its a rough fight, but in fairness to those complaining about dempsey's tactics, should also admit how rough sharkey was throughout the fight. if you watch the tempo of the fight though, you can tell in the last quarter of the fight, dempsey was wearing him down. he was boaring in & it was having an effect. the final punch was a freakin explosion from such a short distance. honestly, is there anyone every in the heavy division w/ such a lethal well formed powerful left hook from either short (here) or longer wind up (willard) then dempsey.

+kelvinkloud Agreed. He was the Best in HW history. Nobody had a better hook. Starkey was in his prime coming off wins vs Godfrey & Wills. As you said JD was 32 & past prime. This was the first fight he changed his footwork style. Manager Leo Flynn convinced him he couldn't stay on his toes any longer & to fight flat footed after Tunney fight. Its not the same Dempsey. He would have had Sharkey out in a round or two in previous years. Even at 32 he was getting stronger as fight progressed. Starkey was fading and folding under that pressure. JD slamming shovel hooks underneath all round long, every round. Starkey would say that after fighting JD you has bruises & welts everywhere. I read he considered JD the best.

Good quality film, and commentary. One correction though; it was scheduled for 15 rounds.

Sharkey made a mistake with that love tap after the bell sounded ending round 6. Don't mess with the best because the best don't mess.

this is one of the greatest boxing matches in history. the way dempsey swung his left fist at sharkey's face is just epic.

The fight, held at Yankee Stadium, between Jack Dempsey and Jack Sharkey, guaranteed the victor a shot at the greatest title in sports, then worn by world heavyweight champion Gene Tunney. A crowd of over 82,000 was in attendance to watch the former champ, 32-year-old Dempsey, in his second-to-last fight, square off against 7-to-5 favorite Sharkey in the hopes of avenging his previous loss to Tunney. It was clear by the early rounds that all 82,000 fans and press row were watching Dempsey grow old over the night. Sharkey was handily beating his professed idol when, in the seventh round, Dempsey landed a slew of low blows. When Sharkey protested to the referee, Dempsey delivered a vicious left hook to the chin while Sharkey was mid-sentence as the ref said 'Break'. Sharkey did not finish his sentence; Dempsey won by knockout. He later fondly remembered the punch as, “one of the last good punches of my life … His chin was sticking out there, unprotected. I couldn’t miss.” Sharkey was definitely the better boxer that night but he could not deal with the dirty tactics and the low blows. The Ref should have took control of the situation earlier but overall it was interesting fight. Dempsey was outclassed but found a way to win. Sharkey was hard done by in truth.

Sharkey was clearly the better boxer that night? What fight were you watching? Both were scoring. Apparently you didn’t see Dempsey chopping him to pieces and weakening him. Dempsey was gonna get that KO sooner or later. Turned out to be sooner.

Jack Sharkey was a quality puncher-boxer known to be highly temperamental in the ring. Kind of like an Oliver McCall without the substances. Sharkey would have a lifelong friendship with Dempsey. He expressed less regard for Gene Tunney, whom Sharkey believed avoided him at all costs.

Marty Glickman the announcer. Was a sprinter on US olympic team in Germany and was banned by Hitler because he was Jewish...became a great sports announcer, one of the best ever in my humble opinion.

Interesting that Dempsey went to a neutral corner almost immediately after the knockdown. Had he done that three months later against Tunney he would have been the first heavyweight to regain the title

Protect yourself at all times is the moral of this fight. Lot's power on the telling short left. Almost too much to be true.

Wow, what amazing power, that super short left hook, almost lifted Sharkey off the canvas.

Looks like Dempsey went inside when Sharkey was very effective from the outside. Agree with some others here-classic in fighting with relentless hooks to the body. Al said-"revenge for tapping Dempsey after the bell". Agree-Dempsey didn't like it and in the 7th round did something about it. See--classic arm hold with left and pounding body with right..Dirty? Yes---as others were and weren't many choirboys. Sharkey was good, clearly--but as shown-you can't get careless with a tiger like Dempsey.. Yes---always did see Mike Tyson similarities............... t

Boxing looked much more brutal in those days. Every punch looks like an intended full knock out punch. Lots of close range hooks and inside fighting. Not much dancing just brawling. Boxers then had to be tough. I think you should only be able to win a match with a knock out or TKO. No winning by decision. Any match that lasts all rounds should be a draw. Then we'd see real fighting again like this.

@trvth1s10 жыл бұрын
Good fight? HELL NO. More like dirty fight. Most people who have never fought can't interpret what is going on in a boxing match unless the video is in slow mow HD. I'll tell you what's going on here just in the last round; 9:39 Dempsey clearly hits Sharkey with his left shoulder and rocks him. 9:45 Dempsey hits Sharkey with a lowblow and when Sharkey looks to the ref in complain Dempsey lands a powerful left hook which lifts Sharkey off the canvas [impressive power] and ends the fight. Dirty because he got that opening from a low blow. Dempsey is throwing low blows and headbutting Sharkey throughout the fight. Not a good fight at all!
@1saxonwolf10 жыл бұрын
trvth1s Sharkey is fighting just as dirty. Tell it like it is or nothing at all. Headbutts, shoulders, forearms etc
@trvth1s10 жыл бұрын
1saxonwolf Both were fighting dirty but the last few seconds of the fight are atrocious. Dempsey even hit him with the shoulder and the ref didn't do anything, then obviously an intentional lowblow to then land a hook while Sharkey complained to the ref, that's not even allowed in MMA, i wouldn't respect even a street fighter who hit a man in the balls to get him off guard.
@1saxonwolf10 жыл бұрын
trvth1s Watch the whole fight elsewhere and you see its a tough fight. Sharkey is fighting as dirty as Dempsey. Leading with head and shoulders. Dempsey never complained about a dirty fight. He was perfectly at home in a street fight. BTW a street fight is measured by who goes home intact, the hell with respect.
@trvth1s10 жыл бұрын
1saxonwolf The thing is that this is not a street fight, it is supposed to be a world class championship boxing match, but it turned out to be a transvestite

Dempsey was a killer but Sharkey is obviously the better boxer. Sharkey would have won on points if he wasn't so careless in dropping his guard

Dempsey looks really rough, his defense is awful. If you watch him his footwork seems out synch with what he's wanting to do, which lends to him looking really awkward. Dempsey here doesn't resemble the fighter in the Gibbon's fight. He wasn't ever really developed and he looks like he regressed tremendously due to inactivity. He wasn't close to prime vs Tunney. I often wonder if Sharkey would beat Tommy Gibbon's and based on the difficulty he had with Mctigue & Walker, i think a smaller Gibbon's would eat him up. It would be highly unlikely Sharkey would knock out Gibbon's, even Miske had trouble & he hit harder than Jack Sharkey. Dempsey was too much for these great Light Heavys like Tommy Gibbon's, and cruiserweights like Miske. He woulda beat Sharkey and Tunney in their prime's if Dempsey was in his prime. If anything all this film proves is that Dempsey probably had a better chin than any of us might think. He took the kitchen sink in round 1 (he looks clearly NOT warmed up or sweating) and he just flicks the switch and recover's in 5 sec's it's a skill only like 3% of fighter's have to be able to recover so quickly.

@ForeverYoung585 жыл бұрын
Wasn't a cheap shot. Sharkey's fault for bitching to the referee when he should have been concentrating on Dempsey. First rule of Boxing- protect yourself at all times.
@ireviewshtuff4 жыл бұрын
You gotta remember Dempsey fought in a time when going to the neutral corner was a brand new rule, in fact he fought fights before and after this rule. You used to be able to hit a fighter as he was getting back up, and you could do all kinds of nasty stuff in the clinch they'd DQ you for nowadays. Old school boxing was - ironically - closer to MMA since it still had its bare knuckle roots during this era. Arguably, the game doesn't truly modernize until the 80's.

Notice Sharkey grabbing his balls while trying to get up. The low blow damaged him more than the left hook. Dempsey castrated him in this fight.
