A very wise, knowledgeable, adequate, reasonable man. A real Diplomat. I wish there were more people like him in the today’s State Department and in the federal government in general.

A most insightful and meaningful interview. Particularly relevant to the current crisis over Ukrainian membership in NATO that every analyst and decision maker must listen to. I hope that US diplomats heed Ambassador Matlock's advice in current USA-Russia relations before it is too late.

Rather too late, they weren’t listening and now we are in a world of dung and fast approaching nuclear conflict. Both sides, US and RF, take some responsibility for this mess. Ukraine, with its incendiary actions towards its massive neighbour, didn’t help itself either.

Only 46 likes as I view this. That's sad. This video needs to be listened to widely and carefully ... more now than ever before.

Brilliant analysis. I was reminded of what we read about George Kenan and Sir Humphrey Trevelyan during U 2 crisis in 1960 and Suez crisis in 1956. Both the Ambassadors were highly respected by Kruschev and Nasser respectively. Because of their honest approach they could subdue the anger and hatred of their hosts. They brought their personal quality in diplomacy and took it to a different level. President Kennedy, Raegan had that personal charm and accept criticism. There was no mud slinging or name calling.

Ideally, President Trump and President Putin would have respected Secretary of State Clinton and our election process. Diplomatic?

What a venerable gentleman. Nice to know we had such wisdom working for us. I only wish they were what we have today instead of the wreckless POS's that inhabit the State Department. He reminds me of the Late Admiral William Crowe , another frank and plane spoken titan of world events. Say what you want about Reagan, he did surround himself with enormous talent.

I'd be interested to hear Matlock's view on the ambassadorship of Joseph Kennedy to the UK 1938-40

Men like him were the heroes of the cold war who brought it to an end. True diplomacy is the fearless pursuit of peace and understanding. His approach has been forgotten, and it is a tragedy. 29:38 is exactly right.
