Jack Hanna's long goodbye: How Alzheimer's is stripping away the man the world once knew

Jack Hanna built the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium into one of the nation's best. He then captivated national audiences on David Letterman’s late-night talk show, "Good Morning America" and a number of his own Emmy-winning animal series that still run in syndication. He traveled the globe as a leading animal conservationist promoting Columbus. It was his home for decades.
But at age 76, Alzheimer’s disease has stripped away his memory and the life he led in the public eye for almost a half century. He was first diagnosed in the fall of 2019 with early Alzheimer's but now the disease has advanced to the point where he doesn't know most of his own family.

Even with a fully functioning memory, it grates like hell to have someone prod you when you can't remember something. She needs to stop doing that. It's cruel.

@@mas5867 I learned early in my Dad's dementia when I asked him a question or two about the past and I saw the anguish in his eyes that he could not remember. I realized that I just need to let him take control of the conversation because he was always trying to teach my brothers and me. I later realized that my father's memories ebbs and flows like the tidal changes. It is just best to enjoy the present time that we all have together.

My Dad died from this disease. The hardest part was, when visiting him, he would always tell me "I am going home with you today". On his last day, he was holding my hand, and turned slowly and grabbed my other hand, and said "I love you Rusty"... he had not forgotten me! Later that day he said this was no way to live, and I told him I would make sure he got home in the next couple of days. He died the following day.... He went home! God Bless you Suzi - You are giving him the comfort he deserves.

My father passed away with Alzheimer's disease. It was hard and I know exactly what you're going through. The only thing I can advise is to not scorn him when he can't remember something: "Nah it's not coming to you" because one of the last things they lose is the ability to know that they've lost. Just let whatever's left of him know that you understand and that he doesn't have to try so hard because you love him no matter what.

My grandson Jack loved watching Jack Hannah on Letterman. Jack is only 11 years old but Thanks to KZfaq we can watch Jack Hannah on the Letterman show. We truly hope they find a cure for him and all the others who suffer from alzheimers. Bless you Suzi for caring for him at home with family and friends who love him. That alone will make a difference in his health and well-being. Bless you Suzi and all those who love and care for Jack. My Father in law suffered from this disease also but he was placed in a V.A. hospital and unfortunately he went down hill fairly quicly. His name was also Jack, and luckily my children got to know him and enjoyed walking with their Grampa before he was placed into an institution. They said he never smiled anymore but as soon as my children walked in the room he would always look up and smile at me like he was trying to say Thank-You I am still here, please don't forget about me. My Dad used to drive up to visit him once a week and he always recognized him and would say Hi Leo. Thank you Dad, I'm so glad you stayed healthy and happy all of your days with us. We miss you. And we definitely miss the laughter Jack brought us. Get Better Jack, stay close to Suzi and your family and friends. It helps

But it had nothing to do with telling others about Jesus Christ. In the end, all will be destroyed and a new Heaven and new earth will be. Eternity will all be about Jesus Christ who died on a cross to save the world from their sins. You can't earn your salvation. Jesus paid the price on the cross.

Jack Hanna gave us so many wonderful memories and his love of animals and nature showed through in everything he did. His conservation efforts made a huge impact on how animals are kept and bred in captivity today. People would laugh seeing him on the Johnny Carson show because of the animal's antics, but his whole point of being there - was so people could actually see the wonder of that animal and want to save it. Thank you Jack - for taking us to far off lands we would never see ourselves and teaching us about the wonders of animals - big and small, and for leaving behind a Zoo that is world renowned for its efforts in conservation.
