Jack & Jill 2 Step Competition Finals UCWDC South Bay Dance Fling 2009
Jack and Jill Competitions randomly pair up contestants on the dance floor. This was the first time Mike and I ever danced together. We had so much fun and won $ too!

I really appreciate these dancers. I'm pretty new to 2-step, but I want to be good at it . . . someday. So I like to watch people that I would like to be like. The "Jack" in this dance is a really good dancer to me: smooth, gentle with the lady, a good leader. And of course he (and she) has a large repertoire, that sure keeps it interesting. Those are traits I'm personally working on these days. The "Jill" here is super easy to lead, very light on her feet, free moving, very nice. Great couple to watch. By the way "light on the feet" isn't a weight concept, it's a follower concept. I've seen and danced with larger ladies who were just as light on their feet. You can be supremely awesome at two-step at almost any weight. However, depending on the level, it can get to be a very athletic activity, so being in better physical shape can sure help. I really enjoy watching this couple dance.

I got to ask one question????. Why are there not a single cowboy hat in the entire dance heats? When I Judged 2 step if a hat was not worn there was a mark down for not being in costume.

You're right, but it's a bit harder to dance with a hat. I always wore one out dancing.

This is a contemporary Jack & Jill, It's not a UCWDC competition. You can wear whatever you want for the most part.

The short guy and the big gal are probably the best dancers on the floor.It is hard to turn a taller woman.

The subjects of this video are GREAT 2-steppers but I find that guy in the background with the fuschia shirt with all the arm pumping very distracting to watch.

The guy wearing 156 keeps dropping the rhythm and THAT is painful to watch.

He is not dropping the rhythm. He is changing the count from quick quick slow slow to quick quick slow to match the choreography of the move he is leading.

Yeah that's a whole 'nother level of knowing the song, and your ability to change your footwork and rhythm during different parts of the music to execute specific styling of moves. It's generally good for beginners to keep the same rhythm of footwork during an entire song, but different instrumentation in songs or accentuation of the singer allows partners to select which rhythm of instrument or vocals they want to accentuate so as to produce a very unique style of move. For example at 4:51 he HAS to switch to QQS to be able to do that move to the music; they also both choose to chop and accentuate the vocalist's consonants with their arm flares. Advanced dancers take advantage of this because it is difficult to transition in and out of QQSS to QQS to QQSS. For example, you can turn the lady 4 times all 4 beats of a measure and look very smooth, but not match what's happening in the song, or you can transition to QQS when the song is reaching an abrupt change in tempo. For example try this with a dance partner: QQSS, QQSS, QQS, QQS, QQQQQQSS.

@@iamonthecan12 QQSS, QQSS, QQS, QQS, QQQQQQS will put you on the wrong foot when you are done. You can syncopate to your hearts desire but at the end of the day you need to pair the syncopations with an even amount of slows or you will be on the wrong foot. The only time you do that intentionally is going into any kind of shadow moves where both leader and follower need to be on the same foot. You still have to correct that when you are through to get back to normal leader's footwork.
