The story behind that fight is a good one. He and Ketchel were friends. Ketchel was a light heavyweight and had no business being in the ring with such a big fighter. They agreed beforehand to put on a good show despite this. Midway through, however, Ketchel started feeling himself, decided to try to win, and knocked Johnson down. Johnson was like, “Oh, it’s like that now huh?” He immediately got up and knocked the guy cold, knocking out two of his teeth.

Just because people perpetuate or re-tell the same legend, that doesn't mean that it's true. It's usually, more often than not, complete bull shit just like in this case.
