As much as I love Farley's manic fat guy schtick, it's nice to see him in something like this where he gets to show off his character acting ability. I wish he'd gotten to do more stuff like this.

this skit sucks. too on the nose. ireland: the country of cops, carpenters, bartenders, and oscar wilde wannabes. farleys irish pub tender reminds me of all the old donkeys who soothed me into a blackout.

No. They're right. It's well-conceived but the writing, as with so many skits in this era, is off in regards to the pacing and the relative weights: the set-up and the delivery are all on the same plane and since there's no division there's no movement from the world of the set-up to the world of comedy....it's all in the same dimension.

I love that what he lacks in accent accuracy he more than makes up for in perfect spot-on facial expression. You can almost smell the whiskey on his breath.

Whenever I have kids I will show them who is Chris Farley is. I know they will love him as we all loved him as well. I can’t wait to do that. Thank you Chris for the laughs you share with us. Your memories will always be in our mind and soul. Rest easy!

Jack: One time Patrick Swayze comes sauntering in and tells me to take off me shirt and dance. "NOT ON THIS DAY", I says to him. Then he says "Are you arguing with me, you tubby Irish mule?" and I says "Dear Lord no, Mr. Swayze, sir." "So I took off me shirt and danced like a Chippendales dancer for the rest of the evenin', fat rolls bouncing, customers vomiting in their drinks. Aye, twas quite a night."

The audience had probably seen the rehearsal. Even so, this could have been the first appearance of the character(though it doesn't sound like it--they cheer when he's introduced), or one of the later appearances where everyone basically knew the beats. Still one of the funniest SNL characters ever!

This is a really deep cut, the sort of extended sketches that fill time after 12:30am and aren’t exactly funny, but feature some of the finest acting from members of the cast. Either that, or it was cut between dress and air.

Jack McManus’s lady behind the bar was Miranda Richardson, who had just starred in The Crying Game and Damage when this aired. I’m sure it’s no coincidence that back in the day the SNL after-party would always be held at Peter McManus Cafe, an Irish pub on 7th Avenue and 19th Street.

The crapping on the flag bit didn’t land as well as it should have. The momentum should have built after that but it was a speed bump. Still great Farley.

This is definitely one of those sketches where they used Farley as a saving grace for poor writing, which they did a number of times in this era. They knew it wasn't great, but Farley's energy would make up for it, and it does. Not everything lands, but he still manages to get a few laughs. Imagine any other cast member from this time period doing this role. Dead silence.

Please. The sketch was far from poorly written. If anything, it was a bit too clever in concept for SNL's general tone.

@@hd-xc2lz I agree, I thought the writing was rather clever, far from perfect, but good nonetheless... It took the concept of traditional drinking stories, with exaggerated, grandiose claims, and turned it upside down, into anticlimactic, self-deprecating anecdotes that left onlookers (in the sketch) bewildered and disappointed. Of course it doesn't hurt having a legend as the main character XD
