Thinking Out Loud: This is the first carving that I've ever done that has a "base" attached at the bottom. It felt very different but I liked how it turned out.

Welcome to the carving community! I would suggest gloves on both hands starting out. ..unless your very comfortable with a sharp knife and have been handling one your entire life. That's my best advice for someone just starting. Now pick up a chunk of wood and get at it!! I started with a box cutter and branches from the back yard. Following along with my videos can help ya get goin'. ....thanks so much for the subscribe!!

I started carving in May of 2020 with a box cutter. My family bought my first set of knives in June for my birthday. So I guess I've been carving with carving knives since June of last year.

Thanks for sharing your talents!! I’m totally new to this. Just finished carving a pumpkin. Question on painting it, what’s the purpose of the BLO, and watering down the paint?

It eases the difficulty of getting into those "hard to reach" areas of the carving. then when the paint is thinned, it draws into those cracks and crevasses that are nearly impossible with unwatered and untreated wood. It's been a learning process but I think it makes a carving look much better. Another benefit using BLO is it can be substituted for skin tone. You can even color the BLO. You'll have to experiment for preference on watering your paint. Start with a lot of water. You can always lessen your water next time. Its all about personal preference.
