Today Uncle Stonnie is sharing a feel good story about a very serious heart condition: Canine Patent Ductus Arteriosus, also known as PDA.
A few months ago Teddy, a cute little Jack Russell Terrier, came to stay with us for training. It wasn't long until we started noticing that Teddy was displaying some troubling signs; he was having trouble gaining weight, had a very low energy level, coughed and wheezed, and had an erratic heart beat, after even the slightest bit of exertion.
We quickly arranged to have him examined and unfortunately Teddy was in the early stages of congestive heart failure. We, as well as the owners, were crushed.
Luckily though, due to recent breakthroughs in veterinary heart procedures, Teddy was able to be successfully treated using a state of the art medical procedure. A small mesh dish was inserted via catheter into position to successfully close the faulty structure.
The results are absolutely amazing, as you will see in the video!
Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is a medical condition in which the ductus arteriosus fails to close after birth: this allows a portion of oxygenated blood from the left heart to flow back to the lungs by flowing from the aorta, which has a higher pressure, to the pulmonary artery. Symptoms are uncommon at birth and shortly thereafter, but later in the first year of life there is often the onset of an increased work of breathing and failure to gain weight at a normal rate. With time, an uncorrected PDA usually leads to pulmonary hypertension followed by right-sided heart failure.
I hope you guys enjoy!

Cool facts the trigger for the shutting of the Ductus is higher levels of oxygen in body, but the way it closes is a flap that slams close with the reversal of the low pressure to a higher pressure system. This is called primary closure... it can reverse up until the time the flap seals closed if the pressure system is disrupted ( for example pneumonia).. so PDA normal in fetus, normal in newborn for first few days... abnormal after about 72 hours. And yes causes heart failure in long run if untreated. It’s great that the treatment of newborns with cardiac catheter intervention has led to advances in this treatment for dogs.. Hoping for a long life for the little fighter. ...

Jack Russells are so tough! My old Jack lived until she was 18,5 years old. She couldn't see or hear so well, but came running every time we opened the fridge or picked up the lead and she crawled into my bed each night. Jack Russells are the best! A big dog in a small dogs body.

This video made me feel comfortable. My dog is 3 and at one point had congestive heart failure. We did an echo and she has pda. She has never collapsed but doesn't gain much weight. I am scared of the procedure cost. One place here is 9k.

God bless you Stoney for taking the time and initiative for finding out what was wrong with this pup and acting to fix it. Hope you haven't dropped the idea of doing a segment on the JRTs. You know your dogs, and you know what they are bred to do and what their instincts are. If you wanted to do a collaboration video with an expert on JRTs there's a breeder in Winchester Kentucky (Ruckerhill) who would fit the bill. They are great dogs but not for everyone . We have a male and female now and had our first for 15 years prior. They have a really interesting history, even a museum in Maryland ! Take care and thanks again.

@@StonnieDennis Yes, sir. I shall heed your wise words. Actually, I do know about woodpiles, having bumbled around on a few, on occasion, over the past seventy years. Thanks for the reminder ! (And, actually, I have enough trouble these days just stepping over the random blow-down.) (The pup, though, does great walking along those blown-down tree-trunks; and she loves doing it.)
