Use one of these with the Solar panel when I do a long session Carp Fishing. No need to barbie on the bank anymore, got a little portable microwave in my bivvy, does ready made meals, decent cup of tea or coffee. Charge my laptop, phone, iPad, or bait-boat in my swim. Absolutely brilliant bit of kit😁😁👍👍

Great review. Bought the Jackery model and the solar panel from Amazon. Will be good for running off smaller devices such as my ipad, mobile and PC as well as a lamp stand. Will buy an induction plate too. All this in case of a power cut. To save the energy cost especially the electricity bill, I will not be plugging it into the mains but make use of the solar panel. I expect it will be equally useful in the summer months to further cut down on the cost of paying electricity bills.

The trick I've found is to leave my direct debit the same, use solar as much as possible to help build up my energy account credit balance. Now I need to find a way of getting a proper off-peak tariff to compensate for lack of sun in the winter. It's an awesome challenge. All the best, Adrian

@Steven Does Stuff Good day Steven. Thanks for your kind feedback, it's much appreciated 😊👍. In general, they will work but the efficiency is greatly reduced. From what I've tried and read before, the glass (dependent on type), can reduce panels to as low as 25% of their normal 'outside' yield. Again, this is dependent on the setup (angles, glass, etc), so results would vary based on that. I hope this helps and please shout if you have any other questions. All the best, Adrian

Awesome review as always, I deffo think Jackery could do themselves a favour by either providing longer cables for the Solar panels either as part of the original kit or as an optional extra, the leads are pretty short . Been using my setup in the shed to recharge power tool batteries , lights, n gadgets, and of course the induction hob in the car camp Setup. 👍

I'm going to come up with a method to make the 8mm connector work better (perhaps DIY a solution, then share in a video). I must admit that I didn't think I'd like the panel as my folding ones, fold smaller. I've come round and prefer the design as it has stability and provides good power output so far. I’ve just received my Jackery 500, all looks good and currently charging it via the 100w solar panel. What puzzles me on the DC output are the 2 smaller sockets next to the cigar lighter socket. Do you know what connector that will fit them? Any help appreciated. Regards

@John Long Hey John! I'm glad to hear it arrived and you're making the most of the sun🌞😎. That's a great question. I believe it's a 6mm and goal zero have something that fits them > bit.ly/3hc0HVo. They are hard to find and expensive on eBay. If I find a converter that turns it into 5.5mm x 2.5mm socket female connection, then it might be worth it, easier said than done though. Cheers, Adrian

I'm so new to this stuff... Would you be able to run a PS5 off this continuously or for say a few hours a day (more at the weekend) With the energy crisis im looking at solutions to run the more power hungry devices in the home, off alternate power. Obviously I'll use it less too, but just wondered how viable is this device as a solution, with a panel in an area that probably doesn't get as much sunlight, especially after summer (the north)

@Wildfire Good day and welcome! Gaming is one of the topics I'm looking into as part of our series Energy Matters (playlist if you're interested - bit.ly/3cnFHfg). I'm currently testing out my Xbox Series X (under load - Halo Infinite, Forza 5, etc) to get an idea for that. Do you know how much your PS5 uses under 'normal' load? This Jackery has 500Wh (0.5kWh) capacity in total, but in the real world I usually apply an 80% usable rule of thumb (rough estimate, can be more or less). This results in about 400Wh usable. If your PS5 say uses 200W this would give you about 2h runtime from a full charge (400Wh ÷ 200W = 2h), without solar connected. Connecting a 100W solar panel and getting good input between 60-80W, would mean you were using more power (PS5 = 200W) than solar could bring in. This would prevent completely uninterrupted gaming while the sun is shining, but it would slow the rate at which the battery charge was being consumed. This could extend gameplay for an hour or two, but that's a guess based on the weather. I hope this helps a little and please let me know if you have any other questions. All the best, Adrian

@skippercaship Good day and thanks for your question. I apply a rule of thumb of 80% available capacity to get a real-world usage estimate. In the case of this Jackery and your 70W continuous load, it would be 500Wh @ 80% = 400Wh ÷ 70W = 5.7 hours runtime. I must stress this is a very rough estimate and you could get more or less. Personally, I always put the minimum of one full cup in (fill the cup itself with water first to the very top and empty into the kettle) to avoid any issues on my 500W kettle. Greetings from a survivor of Storm Arwen in Aberdeenshire! I was thinking about backup batteries such as this. No doubt it’ll be useful during future blackouts. But I’m wandering: Is it better to have a cheap 0.5kWh battery that’s used once every few years for blackout situations or Is is better to have an expensive home integrated 10kWh+ backup battery that can be used every day for using surplus rooftop solar at night time and export during the early evening on the Octopus Agile tariff? Or Should I just get both?

@Anthony Dyer Good day Anthony. I'm so pleased to hear you survived the storm, looked very nasty on the news. Did you suffer any damage? I've taken the liberty of viewing your latest video, great job (liked & subbed too)! From that, it sounds like you've already made the decision to go for a home battery and a LiFePO4 one at that. From my point of view, that's the best current option for home solar (stationary) storage. I've got a few of them currently (testing more for manufacturers), mainly the drop-in and case battery kind at the moment. I'd like to get hold of a server rack kind, as they are increasing in popularity. For good reason, as you can easily stack them (expand the capacity in future) and connect straight up to a solar inverter with a couple of quality cables, that's it. You've probably already researched this, but if you want the battery to work in a power outage (as you have a grid tied system) you would need to have a way to isolate the mains before you could run off the battery when the grid goes down. I would assume that when the grid goes down your solar cuts out (as it did post storm)? Personally, if I could afford a full solar system as you have, I'd have a battery system as well (even outside of the economics). It provides full resilience to run the essentials and more flexibility when it comes to surplus energy (save for a rainy day, literally). I've got just over 1kW of panels in my garden and with that I can run essentials most of the time. I can cook (mini-induction hob, toaster oven) without using gas, keep fridges running (12V Alpicool & Mains Fridge Freezer), run my tech/TV, etc. I'm working on a 24V DIY battery build (first one) currently and I've got another solar inverter from MPP. So once that's fully built and ready to go, I'll have 5kWh of storage, which can provide up to 3kW of mains power, for around £1,200. The 12V version of this setup has been running flawlessly since I built it in the video on this channel and during the summer months I had trouble using the power up it stored, until I found crypto (like you). The home battery will give you the ultimate system for any scenario. As for a portable unit, I guess it depends on what you would use it for. Is it something you could use when walking or car boot cooking or refrigeration? I hope this helps in some way. Please let me know your thoughts and if you have anything else I can assist with. @@DADvinci Thanks for your thoughts. I probably wouldn't use it for camping, most of my camping has historically been to carry my tent on my back into the mountains. So a 7kg battery doesn't fit with that requirement. However I could probably use the Jackery to run something like my modem in a blackout. 500Wh, that would keep a modem online for a good 30-50 hours. I never lost the dialling tone on my landline. So I could get my social media fix! I did have this mad idea that I could use the jackery battery to liven up my main solar inverter in a blackout, but that would require a cable that is worthy of a Darwen award nomination (a male to male 240V power cord). I think I'll leave such things to the Electroboom youtube channel!

How does the Jackery 500 compare to the ALLPOWERS 606. Trying to decide which one to buy. Mixed reviews on both elsewhere

@Jackie Watson Good day Jackie and thanks for your question. From what I’ve found out the 606Wh is essentially the same as my 666Wh, just slightly less capacity. The ALLPOWERS has more connections, dual charging mode (faster charging if needed) and more capacity. The Jackery is less fuss and has had no problems or 'characteristics' to deal with so far, unlike my 666. The support setup for Jackery seems to be better than ALLPOWERS (although I've not had to use it on any Jackery yet). Not sure if you've seen the 666 playlist yet, but might be worth a look > bit.ly/3juowGq. The 606 is also cheaper, especially on AliExpress, where it's less than £350 (links in the playlist videos, if needed). Was there anything else specific you wanted to know about? @Zephyr and McCARBY Good day and thanks for your question. To clarify, do you mean adding more panels (in parallel) to increase the solar input? If so, then yes, providing you have an adapter/cable to connect panels in parallel and that the Voc (open-circuit voltage) isn't more than the DC input port can handle (as detailed in the manual). You'll still have the current limit of 3.75A (limit watts input), but parallel panels connected on a cloudier day will help boost input. @Nicola Dugdale Good day Nicola and thanks for your question. It all depends on the type of cool box and how much power it consumes. There are typically two types, thermoelectric or compressor. In my experience, the compressor kind (similar to normal domestic fridge) are much more efficient and can run for longer on battery power. I did a review of a compressor fridge and it references the runtime I achieved on the Explorer 500 here - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aa51krmdq9DYYaM.html. Getting an estimate in general depends on a few factors, ambient temperature is a key one. Do you have the cool box already and know the specs? All the best, Adrian

@Jazzycat truthkitten Good day and thanks for your question. It would depend on the nebuliser power consumption. Do you know how much power it consumes and whether it's AC or DC? This unit has a 500W continuous AC inverter and can also provide 12V DC @ 10A (around 120W). If you could let me know that would be great. All the best, Adrian

@@DADvinci Hi Just checked the specs on my mains powered nebuliser -they are as follows 220 -240 V 50Hz 0.95A I have no idea what the above means but I have a suspicion that it might be too much for Jackery 500,perhaps I’m wrong .There’s no mention of wattage at all.

@Jazzycat truthkitten Many thanks for the info. Let’s go down the middle for voltage 230V and round up to 1A, so this gives 230V x 1A = 230W. On paper, this is well within the inverter rating (500W continuous) so should be able to run the nebuliser, but I’ve got no way to test it myself. This unit has a 500Wh capacity, which is essentially a measure of the available energy storage, e.g. you could run a device using 500W for 1 hr or one using 250W for 2 hrs, etc. To get closer to 'real world' capacity, I assume 80% of this is actually useable. So, this unit has 500Wh @ 80% = 400Wh useable (could be more or less). In this case and assuming the nebuliser uses 230W constantly, then 400Wh ÷ 230W = 1.7 hrs rough runtime estimate on full charge. I was thinking of going up a step and purchasing the 1000 version,Bluetti (not sure of spelling ) have one too but I remain undecided.about which one to choose . Ideally I would like weatherproof solar panels that you can just open up ,unfortunately Jackery don’t seem to have that .Renogy seems like a good alternative but I’m not sure how to link two panels together to power the Jackery 1000. If Jackery had weatherproof panels that would be near perfect ,perhaps Bluetti have more suitable panels. Do you know how much power a Jackery 1000 would accept from Renogy solar panels ? Anyway thanks for the info very helpful. I believe Renogy have a 160 power ( or similar) solar panel would that work with the Jackery 1000 ? ..

@Steve C Good day Steve and thanks for your question. The kettle in this video is the largest (wattage) I've been able to use with the Explorer 500. I also use the smaller 'one cup' option in this video > kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m55dd8d4nr6qmJ8.html. I've got a small toaster, but I don't use it with this as it goes over the 500W inverter limit. Saying that, it does work but runs about 600W. I hope this helps. All the best, Adrian

@Jacob Jackson Good day Jacob and thanks for your question. It will depend on the specification of the heater. This unit has a 500W AC inverter, so if the heater used less than that it should work. Heaters tend to eat batteries quite quickly. For example, if you had a 500W heater that run continuously, it would use all the charge (assuming fully charged) in less than one hour. @Waj Ali Good day and thanks for your question. I use a rule of thumb calculation when estimating. In this case, the Jackery has around 500Wh capacity and I assume that 80% of that is actually useable in the real world, so 500Wh @ 80% (usable) = 400Wh real world capacity. 400Wh ÷ 180W (Xbox usage) = 2.2 Hrs runtime. This is a very rough estimate and you might get more or less. I hope this helps. All the best, Adrian

Which one Would you recommend this unit or the All Powers 666? I’m looking at it to run a dough roller (350w and possible a 12v cool box) Awesome vids! 😀

@Sam Kirkham Good day Sam! Thanks for your kind feedback, it's very much appreciated 😊👍. They both have their plus points. The ALLPOWERS has more connections, dual charging mode and more capacity. The Jackery is less fuss and has had no problems or 'characteristics' to deal with so far, unlike the 666. The support setup for Jackery seems to be better than ALLPOWERS (although I've not had to use it on Jackery yet). Not sure if you've seen the 666 playlist yet, but might be worth a look > bit.ly/3juowGq. The 666 is also cheaper, especially on AliExpress, where it's less than £350 (links in the playlist videos, if needed). Was there anything else specific you wanted to know about? @Sam Kirkham No problem at all Sam. I've not yet tried any ecoflow products, but would like to get hold of one to test it out. They do have a reputation for quick charging and I'd like to know how that affects performance longer term. Perhaps as the channel gets bigger, they might send out one to test so I can make the video, fingers crossed. Cheers, Adrian

To be completely honest I thought the thing was rubbish. Took about 7% battery to boil water for one cuppa ☕️.. really it’s only good for charging your phone. No good what so ever in a power cut! Your video did help me know what this thing does. I thank you for that. Cheers.

Portable gas stove for a cuppa in a power cut imo. I have a cheap Campingaz stove for that. I'm researching portable batteries for the purpose of powering devices etc... So far it seems you need a really high wattage portable battery for most things which get expensive.

@@UnseenSpirit I’ve got a Campingaz stove coming tomorrow. Got a DeWalt lantern that has 300 to 1000 Lumens and runs for 10 hours on a 5ah 18v battery and as I’d just got a new DeWalt drill with 2 batteries that was ideal .. also got a ring trickle battery charger for the car to keep the battery in good condition as I got a car phone charger so I’m pretty much set for if we have cuts.. a gas heater would be nice too but I’m still looking at them.

@@marley2319 looks like you're well prepped haha. Much like you, I have lanterns, torches etc... It's not often that I need to use any of these on an emergency basis, but they are useful for fishing etc anyway. I'll rather be prepared than not. I'd recommend a good camping kettle so that the brew won't take too long

@kevin Kennedy Good day Kevin and thanks for your question. In the time I've had it I've not had any problems at all and the support they offer off the bat seems good (but not had to use it as yet). You could always consider the ALLPOWERS 666Wh, but it's not without 'characteristics'. It's a good deal on AliExpress at the moment from ALLPOWERS themselves (just over £300 with good deliver estimates from Spain). The other option is the Supa 384Wh (rebranded Beaudens) which you can get for £300 (with voucher) on Amazon currently, video for the Beaudens with Supa link in description > kzfaq.info/get/bejne/lbhoi65_qZfDo4k.html. @Ryan B Good day Ryan and thanks for your comment. I wish it was as simple as just saying one device over another, but I've had that backfire before. Both devices have their pros and cons, with viewers taking what's in the videos on the channel and making an informed decision on that (then asking specific questions based on their requirements). At the end of the day, it doesn't matter which I prefer as it's down to individual requirements. For example, some viewers don't want the potential hassle of a warranty claim or having to fix the plug socket issue on the 666 (doesn't affect the Jackery). Some viewers prefer the extra capacity and multiple charging methods on the 666 (+ the app), but others prefer the simpler design of the Jackery with one method for charging being enough. Another one that recently came up was that some viewers didn't like the fan noise on the Jackery (one even returned their unit), yet I prefer it over the 666 as I find that more obtrusive. Some viewers think the Jackery is too bulky, which I did at first but now I prefer the handle over the 666. Some viewers prefer the warranty/lifetime support Jackery offer. These are just a few of the many questions I try to answer on a day-to-day basis. I bought the 666 before Jackery were in the UK and I would have bought it anyway to review for viewers, even if Jackery hadn't sent one to review. As dadvinci states. It's up to individual preference. I'm thankfull that dadvinci has taken the time to try both and give us some basis for choice. Personally, even with It's 'faults' I'm still drawn to the allpowers 666 and associated 100w foldable power supply for my needs, but good to see a review for the jackery and associated solar panel 😀

@@billmorr65 tbh I’m thinking the same, I will be using it for camping and along with charging all the usual stuff the main reason I need one is to charge my dji mini 2 drone (3 batteries) my worry is they are quite a lot of money and I really want to make sure I make the right decision, as DADvinci have tried and tested both I was hoping that there would be a clear winner, I do understand what they are saying now that they have replied back to me, however at the time I felt that they were being careful not to give a clear answer as they wouldn’t want to upset either brand.

@Wolf Enstein Good day and thanks for your questions (nothing noob about them). As long as the desktop computer uses under 500W (AC inverter continuous output limit), then it should work fine. Do you know how much it uses in Watts? The only thing to consider is how long you would want to run it for, but if you could let me know how much it uses, I can provide a rough estimate based on the energy capacity of this unit. I've had a quick look regarding the Pressure King Pro and the one that I can find is rated at 700W (perhaps you could confirm or provide a link?). As above, this unit has a limit of 500W running continuously so wouldn't work in this case. The larger Explorer 1000 which I'm currently testing and releasing a video soon would cover this (if it is the 700W version you had in mind). I look forward to hearing from you. All the best, Adrian

@@DADvinci Hi Adrian, it sounds as if the larger solar generator would be more suited to my needs. The average desktop computer, nowadays, would run on a 750 watt power supply and the 'Pressure King Pro', 5 litre version, needs a 900 watt power supply. Your videos are great, you explain things in detail, but still make the information straightforward for new folk, such as myself, to understand. I usually go to 'Hobotech' or Will Prowse for information, but it's good to get our British perspective on these excellent power sources. Thanks for your reply.

These solar generators are such a two-edged sword, the technology is awesome, what they do is fantastic however, we are just speeding up the Chinese taking over the world because all these are manufactured in dirty, high polluting Chinese factories it gives me no pleasure to say that because I own the jackery 300 500 and 1000 and 3 solar saga 100s there's just no alternative manufacturing so depressing...
