They're are basically the same technology so you can wear out a CD. I have. Not sure if modern laser readers have this problem, though. The repeated running of the same area with a laser can warp the material because it gets a little too hot after being on repeat forever. This is actually easier to do on a CD player since track repeating is a built in function. For example, when you fall asleep while the player is on repeat on an old boombox back in the early 90s and the CD is all messed when you wake up after playing on repeat all night...not that I know from experience (I totally do), whereas that's not the case with DVD players.
