Frederick also made sure his imperial guards were only Muslims so they wouldn’t betray him to the Pope because screw the Pope. Frederick even wrote the treatise on Falconry and bird flying patterns that was almost entirely correct while learning the Mongol warfare techniques to prepare against them. The dude was awesome and his reign solidified my hate of the medieval papacy because at every turn they opposed doing what is logical.

I vaguely knew who Frederick II was, heard he led a crusade that ended in a diplomatic victory, that he was excomunicated and then excomunicated again for going on Crusade, but those were seperate to me until now. Maybe I should do more reading on this lad. Also...excomunicating someone for going on crusade while excommunicated sounds to me like a complete betrayal of all the shit behind the First Crusade. Like, in that case, the Holy Roman Empire had installed an Anti-pope (hence why the actual Pope was in france when he gave his Crusade announcement speech), and yet he was allowed to crusade. Fuck, most of the major leaders of the First Crusade were former enemies of the papacy in one capacity or another, and that shit was ignored. Gregory just sounds like an asshole of the first degree.

Funnily enough, the story of how Frederick succeeded in getting Jerusalem back during the Sixth Crusade is very interesting, in my opinion. Frederick was quite possibly the only person in Europe who actually questioned the world around him, looking for scientific answers to problems as opposed to just taking whatever the Church said at face value (probably one of the reasons why they dubbed him the Anti-Christ) to the point where actually wrote a book on the scientific method. Since the Islamic world was at the forefront of scientific, technological, and medical discovery during the medieval era, Frederick and the Muslim caliph he negotiated with had this curiosity in common and got along famously as a result. The two were also huge fans of falconry and were eager to share tips and tricks regarding the sport with one another; In fact, the hood that falconers use to this day to keep their birds calm when they aren't hunting was brought back to the western world by Frederick. It's all quite fascinating, I find.

Oh, nice episode. These Italian ones have been really interesting. One thing I'll say is really the 'pornocracy' is just a slanderous name given by people at the time who were mad at various things such as nepotism, women having more overt influence in politics than usual, Popes they didn't like getting elected, etc. (It's also an example of the extremely rarely-used title 'senatrix'! Which...I don't think makes a whole lot of grammatical sense, but it's what they used!)

‘Crimson King’ is a synonym for ‘Beelzebub’ according to Peter Sinfield. It has nothing to do with Frederick II, although Damascus chroniclers described him as being covered in red hair (Barbarossa was also a redhead and Richard I possibly was as Henry II had ‘red-gold’ hair).
