Thanks Jack! This really opened up my approach to music. Crammed most of this lesson in 3 days. One night time flew. It was 2:30 am all of a sudden. Love the broken down manageable chunks. I've been a Dead Head since I was 16 back in 89. Thanks a lot! Peas Out!

Hi Jud! My pleasure. Try using the playback speed on YT. Lower it to 75% and it’s SO EASY. Then speed it up after it gets trapped in musicale memory.

Really appreciate this solo. I have it worked through on my Taylor gs mini as I'm on vacation. Not the easiest way to play it but I think I more or less have it. Getting the phrasing like you is a years long project, which I get. Just sent a small token of my appreciation via PayPal. My hope is it incentivizes others to chip in too. Thanks for all you do!

I really had fun with this, thanks! It's the first solo that I've learned, and I was thrilled to see that all that time I spent practicing scales and arpeggios has paid off. Everything just fell right under my fingers. Any chance you could do a session on Loose Lucy? It's a fun riff with space for some add-ons, but what I'm really interested in is strategies for soloing over this. I think Jerry does a lot of double-stop bends and I'm having trouble building and connecting them in a coherent way.

Hi Jack, could you talk a bit about your choice to use a G7 arpeggio over the F chord (6:12)? The default choice to me would be to use an F arpeggio. Does the V7 over the IV show up a lot in this style of Garcia's playing?

Hi Mike, Not that I recall. The truth is I haven’t really examined tons of Good Lovin’ solos for those type of details. I pretty much just tried to cop a reasonable JG vibe and fold in a little triad etude for the lesson…while still keeping it musical rather than academic. The idea of the G7: In general, the F triad is the move there… but remember we’re playing over the non-delineated space between the last G and the F that is coming. My ear hears either a return to the F triad OR a continuation of the G ideas but making sure to include the b7. That F note(b7 of G) is key to that line working. Not only is it the root of the F chord we are now playing over… but that F note is also just a semitone above the third of the C major chord we are about to resolve into. That’s a great set up. Another way to think about is you can almost always play the V7 of whatever chord you’re playing into in order to create tension…provided you resolve well. Great question… very observant. Cheers, J

Hi it’s me again. Just getting into the Grateful Dead, what albums do you recommend to listen to and learn from? Also how would you approach learning to play the chord changes?

I’d start with Europe 72, Workingmans, American Beauty and Skull and Roses (Grateful Dead) As for learning to play the stuff? Check out my GD playlist and find some friends to jam with? Maybe some lessons? Just have fun and try hard.
