At 56 .. I’m still trying to figure things out and leave as few regrets behind in my life as possible. This song .. keeps me motivated to do just that.

“I wrote this song when I was 16”. That line, & fact, has to have caused thousands of would-be songwriters to just go “well fuck me, I’m quitting this crap”. What a generational talent Jackson is, really no one like him.

It seems almost every time I hear some half-familiar song that fills me with nostalgia, it turns out it's a Jackson Browne song. He has a special gift for capturing the bitter-sweetness of life; to create this melody and mood at the age of 16 is really quite incredible.

This man's talent isn't obfuscated in any way. He's just genuinely good, and doesn't have to hide behind any goofy gimmicks or quirks to show it. I tried so hard for years not to like Jackson Browne, and I just couldn't make myself like him. He's just downright outstanding. I feel like my parents. Bummer.

Absolute genius. I can't imagine writing this song after living a lifetime, much less at 16. Some people get all the talent.

As a teen I loved Tom Rush’s version of this. It wasn’t until I bought “ For Everyman” in my twenties that I realized my new favorite artist was the author. To then learn that he wrote it at age 16 simply blew my mind. Of course Jackson does it so much better than Tom could ever approach. “These day I sit on cornerstones and count the time in quarter tones”...Awesome.
