Jackson Browne: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

My admiration for Jackson Browne began with his first album in 1971. I was wowed by the fact that the singer-songwriter had worked with Nico of Velvet Underground fame - his girlfriend at the time - on her first album, Chelsea Girl. He wrote one of my favorite songs on that record, "These Days."
More than 40 years on, my appreciation continues to grow. Browne still writes songs with conviction and craftsmanship and careful attention to detail. At the same time, there's a perceptible loosening of attitude: His Tiny Desk Concert performance isn't perfect, his heart showing through every crack in his voice.
Browne can be seen out and about in other informal settings besides this one. At the Newport Folk Festival a few years ago, you could hear him play formally and informally with Tom Morello, Conor Oberst, Dawes and more. Back home on the West Coast, he might just sit in when Sara and Sean Watkins put on theirWatkins Family Hour variety show at Largo.
This week, Jackson Browne turns 66 and releases his 14th album, Standing In The Breach. It's a record that fully captures his rare ability to mix activism with poetry: His stature allows him freedom - he's largely free of obligations - with the ability to play comfortably with musicians of his own choosing. Yet he continues to stretch, working alongside much younger players with different talents and interests, sharing his talents and finding inspiration. It's that passion for playing and exploring that brings Browne to things like the Tiny Desk Concert, an awkwardly intimate setting for such a popular performer. -- BOB BOILEN

A few years back I was on a trip to Paris with my girlfriend, we were walking down the street when suddenly someone came rushing up from behind. Feeling sort of spooked, I turned around to see a dark eyed guy saying something like "I think you forgot this" as he handed over my wallet which I'd left behind on the table of the place where my girlfriend and I had just had breakfast. Dark eyed guy was Jackson Browne, I told him I was a fan and he signed a 5 euro bill that I had in my wallet. Seemingly a good way to save your money is to have Jackson Browne sign it, as those 5 euros are still unspent.

In the mid-1970s, I sat in my grandfather’s living room and together we watched a Jackson Browne concert on tv. At the end, I saw Grampa had a tear in his eye. He said, «How can a young man his age know so much of life? » These songs are ageless and connect directly to our hearts.

Jackson Browne, like so many of this era, causes me to time travel. All of a sudden, I am a 19 year old young woman, in the attic bedroom of the home she grew up in, ready to embark on what would be her adult life. There are some regrets, some things I would change, but mostly I'm just grateful for the life experiences and loves I have had. I love that younger people are listening to this music, because "They say, in the end, it's the wink of an eye"...Believe them and me.

My friend,s this is the music of a generation, when it came to music we had the world at our feet, from the early 60s to the golden age of the 70s we had it all. My first love of music was that of JAMES TAYLOR, CAROL KING, JACKSON BROWN THEN I FOUND ZEPPELIN, THE WHO, THE STONES EVEN HAD A FLING WITH GLAM ROCK THAT WAS FUN, AND I LOOK BACK KNOW AND SMILE AT WHAT A GREAT GIG WE HAD BACK IN THE DAY, I THANK THE ROCK GODS OUR MUSIC IS STILL WITH US TODAY. PEACE BE WITH YOU ALL MY FRIEND'S. 🙏✌️😎🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

His voice has taken on such an elegant quality, crackling with wisdom, full of fatigue and regret. In '72 I was 14 and listening to Song For Adam alone in my room wondering what losing a friend is like. Now I'm an old man listening to Barricades of Heaven and I get it...

I just keep coming back to this performance. Jackson Browne has always been able to evoke emotion from me unlike any other artist. Nostalgia and hope, and just bittersweet affection for life and aging. I think he is such a talented and underrated songwriter. I love the depth of his voice, the emotion even now in his older age, he's still got it. The strains of time in his voice make it that much more beautiful. what a beautiful soul.

It seems Jackson is always at his very best with minimalist arrangements; a voice, a guitar and a violin/piano. Really lends to his songwriting, more purposeful than what comes out of the studio. If you haven't checked out Jackson Live at Main Point 1975, you absolutely should. 3 hours of gold, my all-time favorite concert recording, very much in the style shown here.

Turning 60 in a few days, and sitting here before leaving my office desk teary eyed to hear this tiny little jewel and reflect, remembering the first time hearing, "These Days," and thinking that it was one of Tom Rush's best songs ever. The correction made at the age of 14 opened my heart and my life to this wonderfully, both calming and yearning voice that has endured the years better than most of us can ever imagine. I know I am one of millions who are truly grateful for the inspiration Jackson Browne has provided me over a lifetime now of listening to this guy, in so many forms and in so many venues and always with the same awe and respect for his talent and unique soul that hit me in the beginning. So thankful for his part in this fantastic journey.

Jackson just has so much heart, soul and just seems like a very REAL person. Not a poseur, not concerned with fashion or fads, just TRUTH. Most artists who try to stay true to themselves and their beliefs don't have much success. But he's been one of the exceptions to that rule. No wonder we love him and his music.

Jackson Brown has such a way of singing not only from the heart but from his heart. Call it a loan is my favorite song of his. Remorse for hurting someone you love and took for granted is truly the growth from adolescence to manhood. Call it a loan until I have paid in full for the seeds I have sown. Remarkable in our age of selfishness and pride.

embermarrow the two part long eagles documentary that I put off watching for so long told the back story of when they first made it to LA (Glen and Don) they had no money and got to stay in a basement apartment (really just a basement) where Jackson lived above. They spoke of being able to hear Jackson’s daily songwriting rituals above which included sitting at a piano singing continued repetitions of verses and phrases that gave way to silent tea breaks (they described hearing the sounds of quiet interrupted by tea kettle boils) after which he would return back to do it all over again until he got them just right like he wanted them.

+tommy mcghee ... I remember that early December concert evening very well. I was part of Jackson's crew from America. Ten of us traveled over night from London to Glasgow on a charter bus with the intention of sleeping. However, about an hour into the trip the bus heater gave out and soon we had ice covering the inside of all our windows. Not only were we freezing cold but we were unable the experience the beautiful country side covered with a fresh blanket of snow. The incredible reception we received that night from the Glasgow audience made up for it. I'll never forget it. A perfect example how "letting the music lift your spirits high". Thanks Glasgow fans.

I love this guy. His words resonate and have a kinship with me. I listened to him shortly after suddenly losing my dad in 72 to a tragic job accident on Thanksgiving weekend. The album that hit home for me was the "The Pretender" I was lost and felt with dad gone I had lost my planned future that we had often talked about. So I joined the in Marines in 75 and listened to his 4th vinyl album in 76 and felt those songs were somehow written for me, "The Only Child', "Daddy's Tune", "Sleep Dark and Silent Night". Jackson has touched many people. I'm grateful & Thank you sir.

To say that Jackson Browne's music has had a big influence on my life would be a major understatement. He created songs that spoke to me in the most personal way in my most formative years of high school and then college. I listened to him intently and celebrated his music when I was up and especially when I was down. His album "For Everyman" is still, in my view, one of the best in the rock canon. Thank you, Jackson. Please keep writing and playing your amazing music.
