Fished the lower Jackson River tailwater near Covington, VA (Aug, 2020). Beautiful day on the water euro nymphing.

I’ve been at that spot many times. It’s a beautiful horseshoe bend. Sometimes I go up river and sometimes I go down. I’ve torn it up on those trout with yellow jackets and also crawdads. I use a simple crawdad pattern my friend showed me how to make, however, Murray’s fly shop up north on the Shenandoah has a great crawdad pattern I want to learn. I’ve got about a 2 hour drive to get there, but what a great spot to fly fish. I use a Winston 4 wt. Thanks for sharing your video.

Congrats on your first video Corey !!!.. I'm looking forward to slowly re-working my way through your body of work (nearly 90 videos these days I believe) now that I have a little more first-hand experience from hours spent on my local rivers of finesse euro nymphing etc for wild brown trout and grayling based on all the content, techniques, tips and ongoing, real-world coaching you so generously share with us all..I think I'm going to enjoy and benefit from watching them more than the first time around when everything was new to me ...theory is just theory until you get into a river and try things out for yourself ...but your steer has been, and still is invaluable, for which I thank you immensely.

Thank you, TK! This was a raw video. Funny story-this video was really just for my wife who was, at the time, in a different state. She wanted my Point of View while fishing. So, I was talking to her on the video. After the video-she said that I should start a KZfaq channel. The rest is history! Appreciate your support and your kind words. I'm new to the Jackson river trout areas and wanted to know when and where was this video recorded?

John, I was fishing in Aug. Its a great year-round fishery. You can pull a map up of all the boat access points on the Jackson. Each of those areas allow public access and wading. All of these points fish well. Appreciate you watching and good luck.

love this video! Just fished pretty much all these spots yesterday and had no luck with perdigons and various other nymphs. Saw a few fish taking surface flies inconsistently but thats it. Was this filmed in August? I definitely was fishing deep. Can't think of what I could've done differently.

Thank you, Jacob! This was filmed in August. Not sure what was going on when you were there, but I have found in the summer the Jackson trout will get up in some super skinny, fast water. Appreciate you watching and better luck next time!

Craig, it’s a Thomas and Thomas Contact ll 10 ft 2wt., with a Ross Evolution LXT. I run a Cortland euro line to 12 ft of 18mm Sempe mono, then 4 ft of 5x Hanak bi-color sighter to a tippet ring. Cortland 6x fluoro. Thanks for watching!

Are you based in Virginia? If so, wondering if you ever fished the Dan river gorge, by the pinnacles. Wondering how accessible it is these days and if it got reopened again after they shut the area down post 911

Hey Don. If you pull up the VA Dept of Game and Inland Fisheries site. You can find a map of the access points along the river.

It’s the tailwater. There are no wild fish (very few wilds in Hidden Valley).

I moved down to VA about 5 years ago from NJ/PA. Still learning the area. I’ve been down through the tail water a few times. Didn’t have very good luck the one day and wasn’t sure if it was because of a he releasing of water drastically effecting water temperature considering it was brutally warm out following up to my trip to the Jackson or it had to do with technique considering I was just nymphing with an indicator. Any who, I will be making another trip down there soon before summer to give her another shot with the euro micro leader rig. Thanks for your videos man, been catching a lot more fish this way.

@@NJTroutSniffer the best flows are when it is 300 CFS and below. 250 would be perfect. The temps are always great even in the heat of summer. You needn’t worry about them getting too warm. It can be 95 degrees out in Aug and the water temps are below 62. Just look at a map of all the boat ramps and get to know those areas. It’s all the public access areas. You can go up and down stream in most of those areas if you are wading. Appreciate you watching and good luck to you!

Have you ever eaten from the lower Jackson river? How safe is it to eat the fish on the lower side of west rock?

Hey Dakota. I haven’t eaten any as I do catch and release. But they are all wild so I’m sure that they are great all the way to Covington.

Andrew, I caught most of my fish on a size 14 blowtorch, size 16 blue and butano perdigons, and a stupid simple pheasant tail. Appreciate you watching!
