Eat it up euro haters. So my Mk7 GTI had a crazy weird issue pop up where the gas tank wouldn't fill, was expelling gas and required an entire new gas tank assembly. In this video we break it down- costs, parts, etc.
Either way, it's back on the road and it's something most owners won't even experience. But it can happen!

I have a 2018 MK7.5 GTI. At ~39K miles, this past March, my car started leaking fuel from the EVAP canister while driving with my family. Had about 6-8 gallons leak onto the hot exhaust and the entire car filled with fuel fumes while my wife and 1 year old were riding with me. Scrambled to get them out of the car without igniting it and had it towed to the nearest dealership. After a week and no diagnosis, I went to the dealership, presented them with my research and helped them identify the problem. Called VW Cares and reported the safety issue I had with my family. Only at this point did things begin moving. Got a free rental and the EVAP canister and fuel tank had to be replaced--all covered under warranty. 2 weeks ago I was on a road trip, 400 miles from home, and I started experiencing some choking, stalling and poor idling. I got stranded in the Eastern Sierras for hours waiting for a tow truck and had to get my car towed 200 miles to the nearest dealership after it failed to start (had to get my insurance to tow, VW would not as it was past 36K miles). Dealership discovered that a line from the pump to the suction pump was disconnected. Spent hundreds of dollars in lodging, fuel lost days of my vacation, and lost work, and a family member had to drive 400 miles to pick up me and my belongings. Again, repairs were covered under warranty, but my car was nearly 400 miles from my home. And again, I called VW Cares and spent 2 weeks arguing with them about why I think they should tow my car to my home. After 2 weeks, I bought a plane ticket so I could pick up the vehicle and sent them the invoice. The next morning, today, it showed up at my nearest dealership. I requested buy-back documents. First and last VW. In nearly 25 years of driving and 5 cars, I have never been left on the side of the road. I have lost faith in the car, the brand and their service. Was considering a Porsche in a couple of years, but anything under the VW umbrella is dead to me now.

I have heard of this issue with other brands of cars. Happened on my Mom's Lexus IS300. Dealer told my folks it is caused by overfilling your gas tank. So when you fill your gas tank up and it stops, don't keep on clicking trying to get that extra gallon in. It messes things up. Ended up costing my folks $1500 to fix. This was on her 2001 IS300 she bought new in 2001. Still has it and loves it to this day 😎

WOW! Mine's an early-build for 2017 (manufactured in July 2016) with no recalls. I wonder if this defect was only in a certain batch? Did they suggest that the tank had been overfilled, causing evap-canister damage? Very interesting. I'm at 133,000 miles and avoid topping-off. Maybe I'm lucky! Also, I'm aware of the VW-haters; they visit my comments section from time to time. They'll be here soon enough. HAHA! Keep up the good work!

@@Paresh256 I happened to have purchase the extended warranty for my car so it was all covered and repaired for me without having to shell out a dime. I took it to the dealer, they replaced the gas tank, Evap canister, purge valve and cleaned the fuel lines with compressed air. The dealer charged the warranty almost $6,000 for parts and labor =/ I’m also afraid it is just going to happen again after the warranty expires. But anyway, I’ve been reading others on Reddit say they fixed it themselves or got it done cheaper at a non dealer repair shop. Look for a “suction pump” recall for 2015/2016 GTIs. Check if your car is under the recall. If not, I’ve heard of some people having luck having Volkswagen pay for some of the repair by contacting Volkswagen Cares.

2016 GTI here with this exact same issue, fuel tank and evap canister vent lines plugged. I bought it brand new and it had 52k miles when it failed. Out of warranty cost is $3,200. I ended up paying $1,300 out of pocket after reaching to VW corporate to get a goodwill warranty discount. I think this type of failure is unusual for such a low mileage vehicle and $3,200 is a lot of fkn money. I'm hoping there's a recall one day and I can get reimbursed.

Yo, had the same issue happen to me this week. My 2017 started misfiring on my drive home from work and would die at stops. When i got home it was leaking gas out of the rear passenger side. Unfortunately I'm out of warranty and the 2017 isn't covered in the recall so I ordered the suction pump from ECS (30$) and replaced it myself. Now the only issue I'm having is not being able to fill up my tank completely. Might have to remove the charcoal canister and drain it out

At the end of the day, there are over 160,000 of these model/years on the road in Canada alone and they pose a very serious potential safety risk (fire) and are costing consumers thousands of dollars. Of course it's unlikely that all of these cars will fail like mine did, but for argument's sake, let's say they did. And for VW mechanics to fix it based on their official system information, it would cost all those 160,000 owners a collective $480 million to have their entire fuel systems replaced. If they admitted they snuck in a faulty part and added these models to their recall, it would cost them around 6 million to repair. So instead of a huge corporation (with a super dirty past) taking the hit on $6 lousy million dollars, they are putting owners at risk of literally catching on fire and collecting an additional nearly $500 million in parts and repair sales. Here you can view the original recall notice that included the older models - static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2016/RCRIT-16V647-1179.pdf
