I hope that Bo can find some comfort in knowing that even during such a terrible, vulnerable moment, his art and his ability to perform it is an unsurpassed piece of human creativity. They say art is pain, and it's apparent that Bo is no exception. He is sacrificing his well-being to entertain us. It's such a crazy notion that I almost feel guilty for enjoying it so much.

That last scream of his always just sounds so raw. And the part about attempting to give others what he can't give himself always hits a little too close to home. But what just really kills me is the look on his face as he says "I hope you're happy" line followed by the mic drop as he turns and walks off stage. I'm not sure which show it was, but I've heard it was this one, where he said it took him about an hour after walking off stage before he calmed down from his panic attack enough to be able to meet with the fans that were waiting for a meet and greet.

It's not just how he ended the special, its how he stepped away from performing for the 5 years before Inside. This ties into his monologue in "all eyes on me" I heard that even in that performance he was having an anxiety attack and maybe those yells at the end were more genuine. That would explain why he didn't hit the auto tune on them as well. That mic drop at the end really hits hard.

He’s a straight up genius. Highly recommend his specials. I’d heard about him for years, but just thought he did silly songs or skits and wasn’t particularly interested, until I watched Inside, then I went back and watched everything he’s put on KZfaq and Netflix and it’s all SO good. His old stuff has some offensive humor and f-slurs, but aside from that it holds up. His interviews are also great. And the movie he made, 8th Grade.

What I really love about the breakdown where he gets real with you is that it puts the “funny” part of the song into a new context, like you can view him singing about the burrito as him overfilling his life with all these things and they don’t fit, so he’s now bursting at the seams etc. he basically tells you it’s all metaphors when he says you can tell them anything if you make it funny, make it rhyme. It was super eye opening to listen to the creativity and honesty of this song

If I can offer a thought. I would say more people understand this sentiment than you might expect, both in the sense that we are all performers, and we all struggle to strike a balance of doing what's necessary to our fans and doing something we love. The only difference is that as a person working in retail, or a kitchen my people I have to make happy are customers in the restaurant or store. We all do what we perceive as necessary by our job description and struggle to find something that we love to do at the same time, it's almost universal.

The entire chipotle bit is a metaphor for how utterly overwhelming fame has been for him up to that point. He wished someone would have warned him that he was reaching his mental and emotional capacity. He would have preferred to pull back a bit as a way to preserve the integrity of his mental health. The Pringle’s can bit is a commentary on how petty he feels his “first world”problems might seem, especially in the face of all of the major issues that plague the world at large.
@kevinw.6177
@kevinw.6177 3 жыл бұрын
Really good and concise explanation. I don't care if Bo said the Pringles can and burrito are just random silly things and not meant to be metaphors. I just see it as Bo being so genius that he's profound without even trying, because they work way too well as metaphors to believe otherwise.
@melissakennedy1506
@melissakennedy1506 2 жыл бұрын
I’m glad you mentioned the metaphor here. I agree with the burrito assessment. I think the pringles can is a metaphor for happiness. He can’t grab all of it and if he tries too hard it just gets thrown in his face. He wishes he had a daughter so that maybe she could grab the happy for him. Because having children can make you happy but it’s easy to end up living vicariously through them and basing your joy on what they can pull out. It’s just so deep. Whenever I’ve watched his specials or videos, i almost feel like an intruder laughing at someone having a breakdown.

Not in his head.. on stage. This was his last time hes said he’ll ever perform on stage again. Inside wasnt on stage. His mental health issues began few years even before this show. You can see glimpses of him getting unhinged performing Art is Dead in the Green Room.. in front of Top Tier comedy vets and a small crowd.. he beats that piano to pieces everytime he hits one of his ironic, funny but not really, punchlines. Everytime the crowd would laugh, he furiously smashes the keys looking more and more unhinged til it finishes and he gets off that piano like lightning. When putting together this song, hes said how the lighting for the last part screaming was so important to him bc he wanted to really show the audience the most “spectacular, music concert” level lighting... just to juxtapose his sentiment of saying goodbye to the stage forever.. with of course the last lines “i hope your happy” mic drop. 🖤

Loved the commentary. One small thing you do, which is actually huge, is that you always rewind a bit every time you pause to commentate. So many people miss important moments because they pause in the middle of a line, then continue without rewinding, which often means they forget the context of what was said prior. Subbed!

even after the depressing masterpiece that was inside, this one is still one of the songs that hit me the hardest. he's a master of making a song sound happy but making it serious at the end, but it's so hard to top this one for me. especially since it was the last comedy show he had before quitting (and we thought it was for good). idk just the line "i don't think that i can handle this right now" considering the context of him dropping that carrier for years is so heavy to me.

I happen to be a musician (that’s why I watch your channel a lot), but this speaks mostly to my anxiety/autistic brain. Every day, you try, just in life, to please people - to be funny, to be “on”, just to be a functional human being. Then the reality of your mental health hits you and you end up in a heap by the end of the day. Recently this has hit harder than ever (I’m disabled, so are 2 of my kids, and pandemic). Even watching a reaction video, the end of the song has me in tears. The world isn’t an easy place to be, for a lot of people 🖤

Great video, loved the breaking down of the production and the music. This was his last performance before inside, so after this he walked of the podium and he hasn't actually fully returned. (just some background) Only one thing bothered me a bit in the video, being that you said that if you're not in the entertainment industry you can't understand the the anxiety fully. And i think that is a litle shorted sighted (or maybe not the best wording), at this point in our society we are all performing, okay not for thousands of people, but nevertheless performing and your "audience" deosnt have to be a big crowd to get full blown panic attacks. Please dont take this as a bad comment, i just want to say that the anxiety problem is a serious problem that more and more people in all types of professions and studies have trouble with. Again, loved the vid (bo burnham suggestion: left brain right brain)

Yes! So glad you connected with this. That's the ol' Burnham switch -- if you watch any of his specials you'll notice that he is constantly playing with your expectations of comedy versus "real" or serious subject matter. Songs will start out funny, become dead serious, and switch back to funny again before you realize what hit you, all because his brand of authenticity and putting himself out there is well established. You've received lots of good suggestions as you continue down the Bo rabbit hole, but I'll throw in a few more -- Best Lyrics / Songwriting: - That Funny Feeling - From God's Perspective Best Musical/Visual Production: - White Woman's Instagram - We Think We Know You - Straight White Man

YOU do need to watch the whole special. In his interviews, he talks about having full-scale panic attacks on stage. This is the penultimate song of his last live performance. Make Happy is the last, it is in his work shed. He moved on to write and direct the movie Eighth Grade. Then we get his incredible INSIDE. I rarely use the term genius, but Bo Burnham is a genius. I just want him to stay sane so he can go on creating.

The screams I think were real (which is why they don't sound as rehearsed) as he admitted he was having serve panic attacks during this time. This was his last show before he quit for 5 years.

You really should just take some time on your own to watch the whole special. There’s one more song at the end for only the viewers after he walks off stage, it’s called are you happy and that stuff is mad beautiful. But the whole special as a whole is solid to get the whole context of it. I feel you’d appreciate it whenever you get a chance 👌🏼👌🏼

I have never used any sort of of auto-tune (in that I have never had access to the equipment), and you may be correct about needing to be a good singer to use it (and we know Bo is a good singer, as much/most of his music doesn’t have it). However, that notion does not square with what I have heard others say about using autotune. This may be contingent on the settings or type of equipment, but - for example - Trey Parker has perfect pitch, and lamented how difficult it was to create the Kanye songs in South Park, because he had trouble singing off key. How can both be the case?

you said if you're not a performer, you wouldn't understand. However, immediately prior to this song in his Make Happy Speech he literally says, "But I worried that making a show about performing would be too meta, it wouldn't be relatable to people that aren't performers; but what I found is that - I don't think anyone isn't" ; Bo then goes on to say that [paraphrased] "social media was the market's answer to a generation that demanded to perform to each other all the time".

As the song progresses and we get to the last chorus of the burrito part...it hits different. Like, don't get the lettuce, peppers, etc if it won't fit. Only fill your life (burrito) with the important stuff. #goodsongwriting #geniuscomedian

As a note, those screams at the end that weren't on pitch, most believe that was actually him in the middle of one of his severe panic attacks he mentioned in the song "All Eyes On Me." Could be why they sound so fucking raw, cause they god damn were...... Bo is a genius, and incredibly brave for being so open about this kind of stuff.

I think he turned the auto tune on himself. He has a stomp box vocal processor that you can see him knob twiddling when he’s adjusting the pitch shift, and I imagine that’s where the auto tune is coming from too. Maybe not. But that’s my guess. Even the echo I think might be him. Cause you can hear at certain parts the eco cuts off pretty sharply, so he could be controlling that with his foot too. I dunno. But Bo seems to be very particular about control over his stage show and it is extremely tightly planned and rehearsed. So I can imagine he’d want to be able to control as much of it as he can. Shrug. Edit: oh wait. I just got to the part where you notice him go down for the parameter knob. Lol. Should’ve known you’d notice it from the start.
