Fits
The Sleeve ID, and the Split-Nut form a Press-Fit. This holds everything together. The very bottom of the arbor also has a ring and forms a slip fit with the Sleeve to help avoid contaminants entering the chuck.
History
Arthur I Jacobs really did a beautiful job with the design of this chuck in 1900. We captured it in this article-check it out bit.ly/3pXsHOD

From our basic research here are the Ball Bearings for each chuck. The race needs to be as full as possible to evenly distribute the load. The quantities for each chuck vary from 29 for the 8-1/2 to 36 for the 20N.

The history of gears is surprisingly interesting - the process of milling and hobbing gears plus the transmission of torque and movement all find a place here. We will open the "Secret Gear Case" to YT as well through this channel - a personal mission.

here's something that MIGHT help some people. I just discovered my 13 South Bend (same spindle opening as the Heavy 10)...... it's collet remover / thread protector is right about the right size to slide over my 14 old school Jacobs. Now depending on your's and how much thread relief there is on the end, you might only get an eighth inch of movement. Mine looks like it might be shop made and I was able to get my jacobs completely pressed off. Good luck

Question: Without taking the chuck apart, how do you tell the old school from new school? The exterior groove pattern on the sleeve? Thanks, PS can over from Stan's and checking out your other videos.

Good question! Yes, the exterior groove pattern on the sleeve. There is actually a third version -the oldest of them - and it has a knurled sleeve. They are fairly rare.

@@EvolventDesign We have in business since 1898 and I still find a few things around that I have no clue what they are. I will look and see if I can find an old Jacobs chuck. We also have a gear hobb that the company made around 1905. We used to make manufacture low rise traction elevator machines up to 2001 and used the hobb to make the brass gears we used on the double centers. We use it rarely now for replacement parts.

It pains me to see such a beautiful chuck treated by a second class key.

There are 3 versions of the old Superchucks. To truly know the difference you need to open them ALL up to reveal the inside builds. None of the three have compatible parts. The two early versions have large 3/16" bearings in the 30 to 35 count area. The new crap service models have smaller bearings. The sleeves are different on all three models. The split nuts, jaws, bearing race design, all different. The absolute no question best of all, are the ball bearing Superchucks with the straight side sleeve. The entire body, bearings, split nut, and jaws are fully hardened. Can only be drilled out with a carbide or diamond drill bit, if you need to remove a stuck arbor. The new ones can be drilled with a basic drill bit, they are that soft. The results are mushroomed bodies next to the jaws, crap. So maybe follow up when you get all three next to each other, and do a real comparison. Sorry to be so harsh.

That is interesting and I am glad you have shared that with the channel. We did know there were some special older models that had a spiral bevel gear form as the mating style to the key. But those are pretty rare. When I get a chance I will gather them all together and compare them. Thanks for watching.

I just finished disassembling, cleaning and oiling my older 14N. It didn't need rebuilding and is in excellent condition. This older design contains 32 3/16 balls and is known as a "full complement" type. The newer type contains fewer balls in a plastic cage.
